Espresso Accessories for Home: Must-Haves and What to Skip (India)

An espresso accessories kit does not need to be big. A few coffee tools do most of the work, and other coffee accessories are nice extras.
This guide sorts each tool into must-have, nice-to-have or skip for now. Each one gets a line on what it fixes and a link to our full guide, written for Indian homes.
Start with three: a burr grinder, a scale and a tamper that fits your basket. Add a dosing funnel, a WDT tool, a puck screen, a knock box or a dosing cup once those work. Skip a bottomless portafilter if you use a pressurized basket.
- Must-have: grinder, scale, tamper.
- Nice-to-have: dosing funnel, WDT tool, puck screen, knock box, dosing cup and spray.
- Later: bottomless portafilter and fancy upgrades.
- First: measure your basket, 51 mm or 58 mm.
Espresso Accessories at a Glance
Three tools are must-haves: a burr grinder, a scale and a tamper that fits your basket. Five more are nice to have, and they make the routine tidier. A bottomless portafilter can wait, and the table shows what each one fixes.

The Espresso Report says a real setup is a grinder (not optional), a scale, a tamper that fits your basket and fresh beans.
Before You Buy: Check Your Machine and Basket
Measure across the inside of your portafilter basket before you buy any sized tool. Puck screens, dosing funnels and tampers come in sizes such as 51 mm and 58 mm, and the wrong size will not sit right. Also check if your basket is pressurized.
Our 51 mm vs 58 mm portafilter guide shows how to measure. Some Breville machines use 54 mm baskets, so do not guess.
InstaCuppa's puck screen and dosing funnel come in two sizes, 51 mm and 58 mm.
These fit standard 51 mm and 58 mm portafilters. They are not made for InstaCuppa's capsule-style espresso makers, which use their own coffee adaptor.
A pressurized basket has a double wall and one small exit hole. Some tools below matter much less with that kind of basket, and we say which ones.
Must-Have Espresso Tools
Buy a burr grinder, a scale and a tamper that fits your basket before any extra gadget. The Espresso Report says what you cannot skip is the grinder, a scale, fresh beans and decent water.
1. A burr grinder
What it fixes: shots that run too fast, too slow or taste uneven. The grinder sets how fine the coffee is, and that sets how the water flows.
The Espresso Report says: "A machine cannot rescue what the grinder ruined". It calls the grinder a co-star you buy alongside the machine.
Breville notes that "your grinder can have an underrepresented role in the quality and taste of your espresso". Perfect Daily Grind calls a quality grinder the most impactful upgrade for a home coffee setup.
Compare options in our best coffee grinder for your espresso machine guide. If your grinder clumps or holds back coffee, see our electric coffee grinder problems guide.
Our InstaCuppa Electric Conical Burr Coffee Grinder has conical burrs and 60 grind settings.
2. A coffee scale
What it fixes: shots that taste good one day and bad the next. A scale lets you weigh the dry coffee going into the basket and the liquid espresso coming out.
The Espresso Report says: "A scale is the most under-rated tool on the whole bar". It says one that reads to a tenth of a gram is all you need.

Shop Now3. A tamper that fits your basket
What it fixes: a loose or tilted bed of coffee that lets water rush through one spot. Breville says an unevenly tamped puck can break and thereby disperse water flow unevenly.
Most machines come with a tamper, and The Espresso Report says a boxed tamper is genuinely fine to start with. What matters most is the right size and a level press.
Barista Hustle puts it simply: "If you press until the tamper stops moving down, and keep it level, you're golden". The Espresso Report agrees that "level and repeatable beats crushingly hard".
Our coffee tamper guide covers size, pressure and how to tamp. Breville also suggests a tamping mat for easier cleanup.
We do not sell a tamper, so here are two Amazon.in listings. We have not tested them ourselves.
- 51 mm tamper: the THW 51 mm coffee tamper. Its listing says it has a 51 mm base, so it is only for 51 mm baskets.
- Tamping mat: the Supvox silicone tamping mat, a non-slip mat to tamp on.
Have a 58 mm basket? Choose a tamper whose listing names 58 mm.
Nice-to-Have Espresso Tools
These tools make your routine cleaner, but they do not replace a good grinder. A funnel helps stop spills, a WDT tool breaks up clumps and a puck screen helps keep the water head clean. A knock box holds used pucks, and a quick spray cuts static.
Dosing funnel
What it fixes: grounds that spill over the rim when you grind or stir. Our InstaCuppa Magnetic Dosing Funnel sits on the rim of your portafilter basket and has eight magnets in its base.
Its raised wall gives you room to stir with a WDT tool. Lift the funnel straight up, then tamp.
WDT tool
What it fixes: clumps in the ground coffee. A WDT tool is a set of thin needles that you stir through the coffee before you tamp.
The Espresso Report says there is no controlled, published study on how much it helps. Our WDT tool guide shows how to use one and what it can and cannot do.
- Six needles: the Supvox espresso WDT stirrer, as its listing says.
Puck screen
What it fixes: coffee that sprays up and dries on your machine's water head. A puck screen is a thin metal disc that you lay on top of the pressed coffee.
The Espresso Report says to buy one for a clean group head, "not because it will fix a bad shot, which it will not". It found no controlled study from any manufacturer or independent lab.
Read what a puck screen is and how to use one. Our InstaCuppa Espresso Puck Screen is 316 stainless steel with a 150 micron mesh, 1.7 mm thick.
It comes in 51 mm and 58 mm. It does not fit a 54 mm basket.
Knock box
What it fixes: banging used pucks on the dustbin rim or washing them down the sink. The Espresso Report says a knock box is the small quality-of-life piece that makes a bar feel like a bar.
Our InstaCuppa Coffee Knock Box holds 550 ml, which is about 8 double-shot pucks from a 51 mm portafilter or about 6 from a 58 mm one (calculated). It has a removable 14 cm knock bar and a non-slip rubber base.
See our coffee knock box guide. For what to do with the pucks, read how to use coffee grounds for plants.
Dosing cup and spray bottle
What it fixes: static that makes ground coffee cling to the grinder and scatter on the counter. One or two sprays of water on the beans before you grind is called RDT, the Ross Droplet Technique.
Our InstaCuppa Dosing Cup and Spray Bottle Set pairs a ceramic bean dosing cup with a 20 ml spray bottle. The cup is for weighing beans, and it is not a drinking mug.
Our RDT guide shows the weigh, mist and grind routine.

Skip a bottomless portafilter if your basket is pressurized. With that kind of basket, a puck screen helps much less too. Leave fancy tamper upgrades and cosmetic gear until your grinder, scale and beans are sorted.
A bottomless portafilter, for now
A bottomless portafilter has no spouts, so you can watch the shot leave the basket. The Espresso Report calls it "a diagnostic instrument, not an upgrade".
It says one is only a useful instrument with a traditional, non-pressurized basket. Read our bottomless portafilter guide before you buy one.
A puck screen, with a pressurized basket
The Espresso Report says to skip a puck screen if your basket is pressurized. That basket creates its own back-pressure through one small hole.
Fancy upgrades, for now
The Espresso Report is plain: the items you can genuinely defer are the cosmetic ones and the tamper upgrade. A better tamper is a nice-to-have, not a day-one need.
Barista Hustle adds that you should control flow by changing the grind size, not tamping pressure. So spend on the grinder before any gadget.
A Simple Buying Order
Buy the grinder first and the scale next, as The Espresso Report advises. Then get a tamper that fits and a mat. After that, add a knock box, a dosing funnel, a WDT tool, a puck screen or a dosing cup, one at a time, as each problem shows up.
- Grinder: the biggest change to your shot.
- Scale: so you can repeat a good shot.
- Tamper and mat: sized to your basket.
- Knock box: once used pucks become a mess.
- Dosing funnel and WDT tool: once spills or clumps bother you.
- Puck screen: once you want a cleaner water head.
- Dosing cup and spray: once static annoys you.
Steps 3 to 7 are our own suggested order. Buy only what fixes a problem you actually have.
Care, Cups and Where to Set It Up
Espresso machine accessories work best on a clean machine and a tidy counter. Descale your machine on a schedule and pick cups that suit the drink. Keep your tools in the order you use them, from grinder to machine.

Our Verdict
Spend first on a burr grinder, a scale and a tamper that fits. Add the other tools one at a time, as each problem shows up. Measure your basket first, and skip a bottomless portafilter while your basket is pressurized.
The best barista kit is the one that fixes your real problems. Start small, then grow it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is in a basic espresso accessories kit?
A burr grinder, a scale and a tamper that fits your basket. Add a dosing funnel, a WDT tool, a puck screen, a knock box or a dosing cup later, once the basics work.
Which espresso accessory should I buy first?
The grinder. The Espresso Report says a machine cannot rescue what the grinder ruined. It calls the scale the first accessory to buy after the grinder.
Do I need a puck screen or a WDT tool?
No, both are nice-to-haves. A puck screen mainly keeps the group head clean, and a WDT tool breaks up clumps. The Espresso Report found no controlled study behind either one.
Is a bottomless portafilter good for beginners?
Only if you use a non-pressurized basket and a burr grinder. If your basket is pressurized, skip it for now.
Will these tools fit an InstaCuppa espresso maker?
No. Sized tools like the puck screen and dosing funnel come in 51 mm and 58 mm for standard portafilters. InstaCuppa's capsule-style espresso makers use their own coffee adaptor, so they are not a match.
How do I know my portafilter basket size?
Measure across the inside of the basket rim. Many home machines use 51 mm or 58 mm, but some Breville machines use 54 mm, so check before you order.
