What Is a Puck Screen? Does It Help Espresso, and How to Use One

By Saran Reddy, Founder - InstaCuppa | 3 November 2026 | 7 min read | Last updated: 3 November 2026

A puck screen is a thin metal disc that sits on top of the coffee in your portafilter. Water from the machine passes through it before it reaches the coffee.

This guide explains what an espresso puck screen does, and what the evidence really says about taste. It also covers puck screen vs paper filter, how to use one, and how to pick the right size for a home machine in India.

Quick Answer: puck screen

A puck screen is a thin steel mesh disc you lay on top of the tamped coffee before you brew. Its clear benefit is a cleaner group head and a drier puck. Better taste is not proven, so buy it for the clean-up, not for flavour.

  • Where it goes: on top of the tamped coffee, under the group head.
  • What it surely does: keeps coffee off the shower screen.
  • What it may not do: change the taste much.
  • Size: measure the inside of your basket, 51 mm or 58 mm.

What Is a Puck Screen?

A puck screen is a thin, round metal disc with tiny holes. You place it on top of the coffee after you tamp, then lock the portafilter into the machine. It sits between the coffee and the machine's own shower screen in the group head.

Seattle Coffee Gear calls it "a thin, perforated disk that is placed on top of the puck of espresso after you tamp it into the portafilter basket" (Seattle Coffee Gear).

The Espresso Report says it is also sold as a lower shower screen or a contact screen (The Espresso Report). Most are steel mesh or a steel plate with punched holes.

So a coffee puck screen is simply a second, removable screen that rests right on your coffee.

What Does a Puck Screen Do?

A puck screen keeps coffee grounds off the machine's shower screen, so the group head stays cleaner. It also tends to give a drier puck that knocks out in one piece. It may spread water a little more evenly, mostly on cheaper machines.

1. A cleaner group head

This is the one benefit every source agrees on. The Espresso Report says a puck screen "keeps coffee off your shower screen, so the group head needs wiping far less often".

Seattle Coffee Gear explains why. When the pump stops, suction can pull grounds up onto the shower screen, and the puck screen blocks them.

2. A drier puck

Seattle Coffee Gear says puck screens tend to make pucks drier and easier to knock out. The Coffee Chronicler noticed the same thing (The Coffee Chronicler).

A wet, soupy puck is only a looks problem, though. It does not mean your shot was bad.

3. More even water, sometimes

The screen adds one more layer for water to spread through. Seattle Coffee Gear says this can help cheaper machines, but a well-made group head with a good puck will gain little.

What a puck screen does, and how strong the evidence is
Claim What the sources say How sure
Cleaner group head Grounds stay off the shower screen, so you wipe it far less often. Strong
Drier puck Pucks tend to come out drier and easier to knock out. Good
More even water It can help, mostly on cheaper machines. A well-made group head gains little. Mixed
Better taste No controlled study shows it. Some owners think it helps a little. Weak
Fixes channeling No. Clumpy grounds or a bad grind still cause it. No

Does a Puck Screen Make Espresso Taste Better?

Maybe a little, but nobody has proven it. No controlled study shows a puck screen improves taste, and some experts only suspect it helps. It will not fix sour or bitter shots caused by the grind, the dose or clumpy coffee.

The Espresso Report looked for a controlled study and found none. Seattle Coffee Gear says "we definitely don't make the claim that a puck screen will have a truly noticeable effect on your coffee".

Coffee ad Astra suspects puck screens are usually good for extraction, but adds "I do not yet have hard data to back this up" (Coffee ad Astra). Its author still uses one, because it keeps the shower screen and the tamper clean.

Our own product page agrees. It says a puck screen does not make coffee taste better on its own.

If your shots taste sour or bitter, start with the grind and the dose. Our guide on why home espresso tastes sour or bitter walks through the fixes.

Most entry-level home machines use a pressurized basket. That basket controls the flow itself, so any change in the cup will be small.

Our pressurized vs non-pressurized portafilter guide explains the difference.

Puck Screen vs Paper Filter: Above or Below the Coffee?

A puck screen always goes on top of the coffee. A paper filter can go under the coffee or on top. The screen is reusable and mainly keeps the machine clean, while a paper under the coffee stops fine bits blocking the basket holes and can make the shot run faster.

Espresso Outlet puts the difference simply: "A puck screen is thicker, reusable, and can meaningfully change headspace" (Espresso Outlet). Paper is thinner, and you throw it away after one shot.

Paper under the coffee

A bottom paper sits between the basket and the ground coffee. It stops very fine bits from blocking the basket holes.

Espresso Outlet warns that a shot can run faster once you add a bottom paper. So you may need to adjust your grind again.

Paper on top of the coffee

A top paper sits on the tamped coffee, much like a puck screen. It also helps keep the group head clean, but you need a new one every shot.

How to Use a Puck Screen in 7 Steps

Dose the coffee, level it, tamp it flat, then lay the puck screen on top. Brew as usual, lift the screen off with a teaspoon edge, and knock out the used puck. Rinse the screen under the tap before the next shot.

  1. Dose. Add your usual amount of ground coffee to the basket.
  2. Level. Spread the coffee so the bed is even.
  3. Tamp. Press the coffee flat and level.
  4. Screen. Lay the puck screen flat on top of the coffee.
  5. Brew. Lock the portafilter in and pull your shot as usual.
  6. Lift and knock out. Lift the screen off with the edge of a teaspoon, then knock the used puck out.
  7. Rinse. Rinse the screen under the tap and dry it.

The screen goes in last, after you tamp. For step 3, our coffee tamper guide shows how to get a flat, level bed.

The screen takes up a little space above the coffee. If the portafilter becomes hard to lock in, The Espresso Report says to drop your dose by about a gram, not force the handle.

Lift the screen out with a teaspoon edge, since the portafilter will be hot. For step 6, see how a coffee knock box keeps used pucks out of the sink.

Keep the screen clean

Rinse it after each use, and wash it with a little dish soap once a week to clear the coffee oils. Seattle Coffee Gear warns that a clogged screen is worse than no screen.

A puck screen cuts down on scrubbing, but your machine still needs regular care. Our guide on how to descale an espresso machine in Indian hard water covers the deeper clean.

Which Puck Screen Size: 51 mm or 58 mm?

Measure across the inside of your portafilter basket and match it. Many compact home machines take a 51 mm puck screen, and larger cafe-style machines take 58 mm. A screen that is too big will not sit flat, and one that is too small lets grounds past the edge.

Seattle Coffee Gear says the same about fit. A larger screen will not fit, and a smaller one lets grounds escape around the sides.

Some machines use a 54 mm basket. Neither of our two sizes fits a 54 mm basket, so measure before you order.

These accessories fit standard 51 mm and 58 mm portafilters. They are not for InstaCuppa's capsule-style espresso makers, which use their own coffee adaptor.

Not sure what your basket measures? Our 51mm vs 58mm portafilter guide shows how to check it.

The InstaCuppa Puck Screen

Do You Need a Puck Screen?

You will like a puck screen if you make espresso every day and hate wiping the group head. Skip it for now if you are still learning to grind and tamp, or if your machine has no portafilter basket at all.

Seattle Coffee Gear does not suggest one for people still learning to grind and tamp. It is one more step, and it cannot save a bad shot.

The Espresso Report adds that people with a pressurized basket can skip it, since the cup will barely change. The cleaner group head still applies, though.

For daily espresso makers in India, it is a small, reusable upgrade that saves cleaning time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a puck screen?

A puck screen is a thin metal mesh disc. You lay it on top of the tamped coffee in your portafilter basket before you brew. It sits between the coffee and the machine's shower screen.

Does a puck screen go above or below the coffee?

Above. Add the coffee, level it, tamp it flat, then lay the puck screen on top. Paper filters are different, because they can go under the coffee or on top.

Does a puck screen make espresso taste better?

There is no controlled study that shows it. Its clear benefit is a cleaner group head and a drier puck. It will not fix sour or bitter shots caused by the grind or the dose.

Is a puck screen better than a paper filter?

They do different jobs. A puck screen is reusable and mainly keeps the machine clean. A paper filter is thrown away after one shot, and a paper under the coffee can change how fast the shot runs.

What size puck screen do I need?

Measure across the inside of your portafilter basket. Many compact home machines take 51 mm, and larger machines take 58 mm. The InstaCuppa Puck Screen does not fit a 54 mm basket.

How do I clean a puck screen?

Rinse it under the tap after each use. Once a week, wash it with a little dish soap to clear the coffee oils. Dry it before you put it away.
