Coffee Knock Box: What It Is, How to Use It and Do You Need One?
A knock box is a small tub with a bar across the top. You tap your portafilter on the bar, and the used espresso puck drops inside.
This guide explains what a coffee knock box does and how to use one in 4 steps. It also covers why the sink is a bad spot for pucks, and how to care for the box in an Indian home kitchen.
A knock box is a small bin with a sturdy bar across the top. After a shot, you tap the portafilter on the bar and the used puck drops in, so wet coffee stays out of your sink and off the dustbin rim. Empty it once a day.
- What it is: a tub with a knock bar for used pucks.
- How to use it: face down, one firm tap on the bar centre.
- Why not the sink: grounds can block the drain.
- Care: empty daily, rinse with water, let it dry.
What Is a Coffee Knock Box?
A coffee knock box is a small bin that collects used espresso grounds after brewing. It has a sturdy knock bar across the top. You tap the portafilter on the bar, and the spent puck falls into the bin instead of your sink or dustbin.
Zirkus Coffee sums it up well: "a coffee knock box is where the espresso puck goes after the shot is finished" (Zirkus Coffee). Most boxes are a small tub with a sturdy bar on top.
The bar matters. Coffee Setup UK says a rubber bar takes the hit, so you do not damage your portafilter basket (Coffee Setup UK).
So an espresso knock box is just a tidy place for each used puck, right next to your machine.
How to Use a Knock Box in 4 Steps
Turn the portafilter face down with the basket just below the rim. Give one firm tap on the centre of the knock bar while you steady the box with your free hand. The puck drops clean, and you can rinse the basket and brew again.
- Basket below the rim. Turn the portafilter face down, with the basket just below the rim of the box.
- Firm tap on the bar centre. Give one firm tap on the middle of the knock bar, not on the edge of the box.
- Steady the box. Hold the box with your free hand while you tap.
- The puck drops clean. The used puck falls into the box in one go.
These 4 steps are the ones printed on our box. Knock the puck out while it is still warm.
Breville says warm grounds are easier to remove than ones that have cooled and set (Breville). So knock out the puck soon after you brew.
These tools fit standard 51 mm and 58 mm portafilters. They are not for InstaCuppa's capsule-style espresso makers, which use their own coffee adaptor.

Knock Box vs Sink vs Dustbin Rim
The sink is the worst place for used pucks, since coffee grounds do not break down in water and can build up in the pipe under the sink. Tapping on the dustbin rim works, but it is messy. A knock box is the cleanest choice.
Many people tap the portafilter on the edge of the dustbin, scrape the puck out with a spoon, or rinse it into the sink. Zirkus Coffee says these ways work, but they are messy and slow.
Why the sink is a bad idea
John Padilla Plumbing puts it plainly: "Coffee grounds don't break down in water like you might think" (John Padilla Plumbing). It says the grounds clump together with grease and soap and stick to the pipe walls.
Coffee Setup UK says rinsing pucks down the drain does the same: "This blocks your sink over time". The grounds collect in the bend under the sink.
| Where the puck goes | What happens | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen sink | Grounds do not break down in water and can clog the pipe under the sink. | Avoid |
| Dustbin rim | Wet grounds fly off, smear the rim and stick to the basket. | Works, but messy |
| Spoon scrape | Slow, and wet coffee ends up on your fingers. | Works, but slow |
| Knock box | One tap on the bar and the puck drops into the box. Empty it once a day. | Cleanest |
Do You Need a Knock Box?
You need a knock box if you make espresso every day, make a few drinks in a row, or share the machine with family. If you only pull a shot every few weeks, the dustbin can be fine. A knock box mainly saves mess and time.
Zirkus Coffee says to think about a knock box if you make espresso daily. It also says that if you make one shot every few weeks, the dustbin may be enough.
In a busy Indian kitchen, the box also keeps wet coffee off the counter.

Shop NowHow to Empty and Clean a Knock Box
Empty the knock box once a day into the wet-waste bin. Then lift the knock bar out, rinse the box and the bar with water, and let them dry before you set the bar back. Wash the box once before you first use it.
- Before first use: wash the box.
- Every day: tip the pucks into the wet-waste bin.
- After emptying: lift the bar out and rinse the box and the bar with water.
- Dry: let both dry, then set the bar back in its notches.
Do not let it overfill. Coffee Setup UK notes that the next puck cannot fall cleanly if a pile is blocking it.
A clean box is part of a clean machine routine. For the deeper clean, see our guide on how to descale an espresso machine in Indian hard water.
Where Do the Used Pucks Go Next?
Used pucks go in the wet-waste bin, or into a compost pile if you keep one. Washington State University Extension advises no more than one part coffee grounds in five in a compost pile, because too much can harm plants. Mix them with other kitchen scraps.
WSU Extension says: "Use no more than 20 percent by volume of coffee grounds in a compost pile" (WSU Extension). It also warns that too many grounds in compost can be harmful to plants.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a knock box used for?
A knock box holds used espresso pucks. You tap the portafilter on its bar and the puck drops in. It keeps wet coffee out of the sink and off the dustbin rim.
How do you use a coffee knock box?
Turn the portafilter face down with the basket just below the rim. Give one firm tap on the centre of the knock bar. Steady the box with your free hand, and the puck drops clean.
Can I knock coffee grounds into the sink?
It is better not to. Plumbers say coffee grounds do not break down in water. They can build up in the pipe bend and block the sink over time.
How many pucks does the InstaCuppa knock box hold?
It holds 550 ml. That is about 8 double-shot pucks from a 51 mm portafilter, or about 6 from a 58 mm portafilter. These are calculated figures, so empty it once a day.
How do I clean a knock box?
Empty the pucks into the wet-waste bin once a day. Lift the knock bar out, rinse the box and the bar with water, let them dry, then set the bar back.
Do I really need a knock box?
If you make espresso every day, it saves mess and time. If you only pull a shot every few weeks, the dustbin can work fine.
