Electric Coffee Grinder Problems: Coarse Grinds, Static, Retention and How to Fix Each

Most electric coffee grinder problems come down to four things. The grind is uneven, grounds cling with static, old coffee stays inside, or the motor gets hot.

This guide shows what causes each one and how to fix it at home in India.

Quick Answer: how to fix electric coffee grinder problems

Most electric coffee grinder problems have a simple fix. Use a clean burr grinder for an even grind, and mist the beans with one or two sprays of water to cut static. Purge old grounds, and grind smaller batches so the motor stays cool.

What Goes Wrong with Electric Coffee Grinders?

Electric coffee grinder problems fall into four groups: an uneven or coarse grind, static, old coffee left inside the grinder, and a motor that gets hot. Each one has a clear cause. Each one also has a simple fix you can do at home.

  • Uneven or coarse grind: weak, sour or bitter coffee.
  • Static: grounds stick to the cup, the chute and your counter.
  • Old grounds inside: stale coffee mixes into your fresh dose.
  • Heat: the motor warms up, slows down or cuts out.

Baratza, a grinder maker, says buildup in the grind chamber and chute can hurt flavour, grinding speed and consistency (Baratza).

So a clean grinder fixes more than you might think.

Why Does Your Grinder Produce Uneven, Coarse Grinds?

A blade grinder chops beans at random, so you get dust and chunks in the same batch. A burr grinder crushes beans between two burrs to a set size. If a burr grinder still grinds coarse, the burrs may be clogged with old coffee or worn out.

A mixie or blade grinder has no grind setting at all. Grinding longer only turns the small bits into dust while the big bits stay big.

Our guide to burr vs blade grinders explains this in more detail.

How to fix it

  • Switch from a blade grinder to any burr grinder.
  • Pick a burr grinder with enough fine settings for your brew. See our espresso grind size guide.
  • Brush the burrs. Old coffee buildup can make the grind less even.
  • If the grind is still coarse, the burrs may be worn. Read when to replace grinder burrs.

Why Do Coffee Grounds Stick to Everything?

Grinding builds a static charge on the coffee. The charged grounds cling to the cup, the chute and the counter instead of falling where you want them. Dry, cold air makes static worse, and light roasts tend to build more of it.

Researchers at the University of Oregon say the static comes from the beans cracking and rubbing against the burrs (University of Oregon).

Epicurious notes that a cold room or low humidity can make it worse (Epicurious). That is why static often shows up on dry winter days and in rooms with the AC on.

Roast matters too. Baratza says light roasts can create more static and chaff (Baratza).

The same Oregon team found that dark roasts hold less moisture and clump more (University of Oregon).

The simplest fix for static is a drop of water on the beans, shown next.

How to Fix Static With RDT

RDT, the Ross Droplet Technique, means adding a tiny bit of water to whole beans just before you grind. Mist one dose of beans in a cup with one or two sprays, stir, then grind. Spray the beans, never the grinder.

A University of Oregon release on the 2023 study says: "Adding a squirt of water to coffee beans before grinding reduces static electric charge on the coffee grounds" (University of Oregon).

Epicurious adds that "you only need one or two drops of water" (Epicurious). The study's authors warn that "too much water may promote caking or corrosion within the grinder" (SCA).

So mist one dose in a cup, not the whole hopper. Our full RDT guide shows the weigh, mist and grind routine step by step.

Our InstaCuppa Dosing Cup and RDT Spray Set pairs a ceramic bean dosing cup with a 20 ml spray bottle. The cup holds beans, so it is not a mug or a cup for drinking.

Does Your Grinder Overheat or Retain Old Grounds?

Some coffee always stays in the burrs and chute after you grind, and it goes stale. Purge a little before your first cup and brush the burrs dry. If the motor gets hot or stops, unplug it, let it cool, and grind smaller batches.

Old grounds left inside (retention)

Breville tells owners to purge the retained grinds before the first coffee of the day. It says: "Old grinds may affect the in-cup quality and coffee taste" (Breville).

  • Purge: grind a few beans and throw that coffee away before your first cup.
  • Brush: Baratza suggests a routine clean every 4 to 6 weeks. Brush out loose grounds from the burrs and chute (Baratza).
  • Keep water away from the burrs: "Do not allow the burrs to get wet, otherwise they will rust" (Breville).

Our InstaCuppa Electric Grinder V3 has airflow cleaning. Press its silicone pump and it blows out leftover grounds from the burrs.

Its product page also says to use only a dry brush and never water on the burr surfaces. For a full routine, see how to clean a burr coffee grinder.

Heat and sudden stops

Baratza lists grinding too much coffee at once, and grinding far too fine, as causes of clogs (Baratza). Grind only what you will brew.

If the grinder stops mid-grind, the motor may have cut out from heat. Our V3 guide says to unplug it and let it cool for 20 to 30 minutes, then check that nothing is jammed in the burrs.

Which Grinder Type Has the Fewest Problems?

A conical burr grinder with plenty of grind settings, an easy way to clean the burrs and a container that stays dry has the fewest problems. Blade grinders are fine for rough filter coffee but cannot make an even espresso grind.

Electric coffee grinder problems by grinder type
Problem Blade grinder (mixie style) Burr grinder
Uneven grind Common. The blade chops beans at random. Less common. Two burrs crush beans to a set size.
Static Can happen Can happen. RDT and a clean grinder help.
Old grounds left inside Some, around the blade Some, in the burrs and chute. Brush or purge them.
Heat and stops Can get hot on long runs Long runs can trip the motor's heat cut-off
Good for espresso? No Yes, if it grinds fine enough

For French press, pour-over or moka pot, a basic burr grinder does the job well. Espresso needs a fine, even grind, so settings and clean burrs matter more.

Our InstaCuppa Classic Edition grinder has 25 settings, a stainless steel burr and an anti-static canister. The Electric Grinder V3 has 60 settings and airflow cleaning for finer espresso work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my electric coffee grinder not grinding fine enough?

A blade grinder cannot make an even, fine grind. On a burr grinder, check that you are on a fine setting, that the burrs are clean, and that they are not worn.

Can I use a mixie to grind coffee beans?

You can, but the grind will be uneven, with dust and chunks mixed together. That may be fine for filter coffee, but not for espresso.

Why does my grinder make coarse grounds even on the finest setting?

Old coffee may be stuck around the burrs, or the burrs may be worn. Brush them clean first. If the grind is still coarse, read about when to replace burrs.

How do I reduce static in my coffee grinder?

Use RDT. Mist the beans in a cup with one or two sprays of water, stir, then grind. Spray the beans, never the grinder.

What is grounds retention and does it affect taste?

Retention is old coffee left inside the grinder after you grind. Breville says old grinds may affect the taste, so purge a little before your first cup.

Can I wash grinder burrs with water?

No. Brush the burrs dry. Breville's grinder manual warns that wet burrs will rust.

Why does my electric grinder stop or get hot?

Long runs can trip the motor's heat cut-off. Unplug it, let it cool, and check that nothing is jammed in the burrs. Grind smaller batches next time.
