A coffee tamper is the small steel press that packs ground coffee into your espresso basket. Get the size and the press right, and your shots run more evenly.
This guide covers the right tamper size, how hard to press, flat vs spring tampers and a simple 5-step tamp. It is written for Indian home kitchens with a 51 mm or 58 mm portafilter.
Buy a coffee tamper that matches the inside of your basket, such as 51 mm or 58 mm. Press straight down until the coffee stops giving way, about 30 pounds, and keep the tamper level. A level, steady tamp matters more than pushing extra hard.
- Size: match your basket. Measure it first.
- Pressure: about 30 pounds, or until the tamper stops moving.
- Angle: keep it level. A tilted puck brews unevenly.
- Pressurized basket: no hard tamp needed.
What Does a Coffee Tamper Do?
A coffee tamper presses the loose grounds in your basket into a firm, flat bed. That squeezes out the air, so water has to pass through all the coffee at the same speed. Without a good tamp, water finds the easy path and the shot tastes uneven.
Barista Hustle explains it simply. If there is a loose spot, water rushes through it, so that coffee gets over-extracted and the rest is under-extracted (Barista Hustle).
An espresso tamper fixes that by making the bed the same density all over. Then your grind size, not air gaps, sets how fast the shot runs.
What Size Coffee Tamper Do You Need?
Match the tamper to the inside of your portafilter basket. Common basket sizes include 51 mm, 54 mm and 58 mm, so measure yours before you buy. A snug tamper leaves less loose coffee at the edges and gives a more even puck.
EspressoFit's rule is short: "buy the tamper size that matches your portafilter" (EspressoFit). It also says a snug tamper is worth it, because the closer it is to the basket wall, the more even the puck.
Not sure which basket you have? Our 51mm vs 58mm portafilter guide shows how to measure it and which machines use which size.
| Your basket | Tamper to buy | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|
| 51 mm | A tamper sold as 51 mm | Match the tamper to the portafilter. Measure the inside of the basket first. |
| 58 mm | A tamper sold as 58 mm | Basket maker IMS suggests a precision tamper of 58.4 to 58.5 mm for its 58 mm baskets. |
| 54 mm | A tamper sold as 54 mm | Breville and Sage home machines use 54 mm. A 58 mm tamper will not fit them. |
So a 51mm tamper is for 51 mm baskets, and a 58mm tamper is for 58 mm baskets. Measure the basket rather than guessing from the machine's name.
These tools fit standard 51 mm and 58 mm portafilters. They are not for InstaCuppa's capsule-style espresso makers, which use their own coffee adaptor and tamper.
How Hard Should You Tamp Espresso?
Gaggia suggests about 30 pounds of pressure, roughly 13.6 kg. Barista Hustle says the exact number matters less: press until the tamper stops moving down, and keep it level. Use the lightest press that gets there, so your wrist stays happy.
Gaggia's guide says to apply about 30 pounds of pressure with your tamper (Gaggia). That is roughly 13.6 kg.
Barista Hustle puts it another way: "If you press until the tamper stops moving down, and keep it level, you're golden".
You cannot really over-tamp
Barista Hustle adds: "There's no maximum tamping pressure". Coffee grounds are tough, and you cannot crush them with a tamper.
It also says the pressure should be as small as possible while still doing the job. Pressing harder than you need only tires your wrist.
Feel what 30 pounds is like
Gaggia has a neat trick. Put a towel on a bathroom scale and press down with your hand to see how hard you are pushing.
Flat vs Spring-Loaded (Calibrated) Tamper
A flat tamper is a plain steel base, and you control the force. A spring-loaded or calibrated tamper gives way at a set force, so each press feels the same. Both work, as long as the base is flat and the press is level.
| Tamper type | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Flat tamper | A solid, flat steel base. You decide how hard to press. | Most home baristas. Barista Hustle says flat tampers are key for an even bed. |
| Spring-loaded (calibrated) tamper | A spring gives way at a set force, so each press feels the same. | Anyone who wants the same press every time. |
| Convex tamper | The base is slightly rounded in the middle. | Some baristas like it. Barista Hustle prefers flat. |
Barista Hustle says flat tampers are key for a flat, even bed of coffee. Gaggia notes that calibrated tampers and tamping mats exist that alert you at 30 pounds.
Coffee tampers and a tamping mat on Amazon.in
We do not sell a tamper, so here are picks we checked on Amazon.in. All three tampers are 51 mm, and we have not tested them ourselves.
- Flat, 51 mm: the THW 51 mm coffee tamper, a solid steel tamper.
- Flat, 51 mm: the SHAFIRE 51 mm espresso tamper, with a steel base and handle.
- Spring-loaded, 51 mm: the Supvox 51 mm spring-loaded tamper, for the same press each time.
- Tamping mat: the Supvox silicone coffee tamper mat, a non-slip tamping mat.
Have a 58 mm basket? Pick a tamper sold as 58 mm, since the size matters more than the brand.
How to Tamp Espresso in 5 Steps
Weigh your dose, spread the grounds evenly, set the portafilter on a flat surface, press straight down until the coffee stops giving way, then check that the bed is level. Wipe the rim, lock in the portafilter and brew right away.
- Weigh the dose. Gaggia's guide uses 14 to 16 grams of coffee for a double basket. Use the same dose every time.
- Spread it evenly. Tap or level the grounds so there are no heaps or holes.
- Rest it flat. Set the portafilter on a tamping mat or the edge of the counter.
- Press straight down. Keep your wrist straight. Stop when the tamper stops moving.
- Check it is level. Lift the tamper out straight, wipe the rim and brew.
A scale makes step one easy. Our InstaCuppa Coffee Scale with Timer reads in 0.1 g steps up to 3 kg and has a built-in timer.
A dosing funnel helps with step two. Our InstaCuppa Magnetic Dosing Funnel sits on the basket rim, keeps the grounds in the basket, and lifts off straight before you tamp.
The funnel is about 20 mm tall. Check that it clears your grinder's spout before you grind.

Shop NowCommon Tamping Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
The most common mistake is a tilted tamp. One side of the puck ends up looser, water rushes through it, and the coffee extracts unevenly. Other mistakes are tamping harder to fix a fast shot, and changing the dose from shot to shot.
1. A tilted puck
Barista Hustle says your tamp should always be perfectly horizontal. A tilt leaves a loose side that water runs through faster, which baristas call channeling.
Tastes sour and bitter at once? See our guide on why home espresso tastes sour or bitter.
2. Tamping harder to slow a fast shot
Barista Hustle says to control the flow with grind size, not tamp pressure. If the shot runs too fast, grind a little finer.
Our espresso grind size guide explains how fine to go on a home machine.
3. A different dose every time
More or less coffee changes how the puck packs. Weigh the dose and keep it the same, so the tamp is the same too.
Do Pressurized Baskets Need a Hard Tamp?
A pressurized, or double-wall, basket builds its own pressure through a small hole under the coffee, so it does not need a hard tamp. Gaggia says these baskets remove the need to tamp, and Breville says the back pressure makes up for an uneven tamp. Just fill it and lock it in.
Gaggia says: "Pressurized filter baskets eliminate the need to tamp". You simply fill the basket and lock it into the machine.
Breville explains why. The back pressure makes up for problems like uneven tamping or the wrong grind size (Breville).

What Goes on Top After You Tamp
After you tamp, some home baristas lay a puck screen on top of the coffee. It goes in last, after the coffee is pressed flat. It helps keep coffee out of the machine's water head and lets the used puck drop out in one piece.
Our InstaCuppa Puck Screen is a thin disc of 316 stainless steel mesh, 150 micron and 1.7 mm thick. Measure the inside of your basket and pick 51 mm or 58 mm.
Then lock in the portafilter and brew straight away. For more beginner habits, read our espresso brewing tips for Indian beginners.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size coffee tamper do I need?
Buy the size that matches your portafilter basket. Measure across the inside of the basket. A 51 mm basket takes a 51 mm tamper, and a 58 mm basket takes a 58 mm tamper.
How hard should I tamp espresso?
Gaggia suggests about 30 pounds, or roughly 13.6 kg. Barista Hustle says to press until the tamper stops moving down and keep it level. A level press matters more than the exact number.
Can you tamp coffee too hard?
Not really. Barista Hustle says there is no maximum tamping pressure, because you cannot crush coffee with a tamper. Use the lightest press that stops the tamper moving, to save your wrist.
Is a spring-loaded tamper better than a flat one?
It is not better, just more repeatable. A spring-loaded tamper gives the same press every time. A plain flat tamper works just as well if you press level until it stops.
Do I need a tamping mat?
It helps. A tamping mat gives the portafilter a steady, non-slip spot while you press, and it keeps the counter clean. You can tamp without one.
Do I need to tamp a pressurized basket?
Not hard. Gaggia says pressurized filter baskets remove the need to tamp. Breville says the basket's back pressure makes up for an uneven tamp.
