RDT for Coffee: Stop Grinder Static With a Dosing Cup and One Spray
Grounds that cling to the grinder chute and fly across the counter are a static problem. One or two sprays of water on the beans, from a small bottle, can calm it down.
This guide explains RDT for coffee, why grinders build static, and how a coffee dosing cup makes the routine easy. It also covers single dosing and how much water is safe for your grinder at home in India.
RDT, the Ross Droplet Technique, means misting your whole beans with one or two sprays of water just before you grind. Research shows the water cuts static, so grounds stop clinging and clumping. A coffee dosing cup holds one weighed dose, so you can mist it and pour it straight into the grinder.
- Routine: weigh, mist, stir, grind.
- How much water: one or two sprays, never wet beans.
- Where: mist the beans in the cup, never the grinder.
- Grinders: manual or electric.
What Is RDT for Coffee?
RDT stands for the Ross Droplet Technique. You add a tiny amount of water to whole coffee beans just before you grind them, often with a small spray bottle. The water helps the static charge escape, so the grounds fall clean instead of clinging to the grinder.
The Specialty Coffee Association describes it as a small amount of water added "using a spray bottle or dropper" to whole beans before grinding (SCA 25 Magazine). Baristas have used it for years.
Epicurious says the idea was first shared on an online coffee forum in 2005 by a man named David Ross (Epicurious). That is where the name comes from.
In 2023, a study in the journal Matter put the trick to a real test. A University of Oregon report sums it up: "Adding a squirt of water to coffee beans before grinding reduces static electric charge on the coffee grounds" (University of Oregon).
Why Does a Coffee Grinder Build Static?
Coffee grinder static starts when grinding cracks the beans and rubs them against the burrs, which charges the grounds. Dry beans charge more, so dark roasts, which hold less moisture, often clump more. Charged grounds cling to the chute, scatter on the counter and stay stuck inside the grinder.
Chemist Christopher Hendon led the study with Joshua Méndez Harper of Portland State University (Daily Coffee News). Hendon thinks the static comes from beans cracking and rubbing against the burrs.
The team found that the water inside the beans mattered most. Dark roasts are roasted longer, so they hold less moisture, and clumping was more of a problem with them.
Dry air can make static worse too. Epicurious notes that a cold room or one with low humidity adds to the problem, so you may see more mess on some days than others.
What the water changed in the lab
A splash of water before grinding led to a longer espresso shot and a stronger brew. The shots were also more alike from one to the next.
Fewer grounds stayed stuck in the grinder, too. The SCA piece also points to cleaner counters.
Will you taste the change at home? One coffee expert told Epicurious it is a personal call.
The cleaner grinder is the part you will surely notice.
What Does a Coffee Dosing Cup Do?
A coffee dosing cup holds one dose of whole beans. You weigh the beans in it on a scale, mist them, then pour them into the grinder through its spout. It is a tool for beans, not a cup for drinking coffee.
A dosing cup gives RDT a home. The beans sit in one small, open cup, so you can mist them and swirl them before you pour.
The spout matters as well. It tips the beans straight into the throat of the grinder, so they go where you pour them.
Please do not drink from it. Our dosing cup is made for weighing and pouring beans, and it is not a mug.
How to Do RDT: Weigh, Mist, Grind in 5 Steps
Weigh one dose of beans in the dosing cup on your scale. Hold the spray bottle upright about an inch above the beans and spray once or twice. Stir or swirl the beans, pour them into the grinder, and grind right away.
- Weigh. Put the dosing cup on your scale, tare it, and add one dose of about 20 to 30 g of beans.
- Mist. Hold the spray bottle upright, about an inch above the beans, and spray once or twice.
- Stir. Swirl the cup or stir the beans with a spoon handle, so the mist spreads.
- Pour. Tip the spout into the grinder and pour slowly.
- Grind. Grind right away, and empty the spray bottle when you are done.
The stir step comes from the experts. Nick Terzulli of Fellow told Epicurious he sprays a single dose once or twice, then stirs or shakes the beans before grinding.
A scale that reads in small steps makes the weigh step easy. Our guide on why a coffee scale for espresso needs 0.1 g precision explains why the dose matters.
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Mist the beans in the dosing cup | Spray into the grinder or onto the burrs |
| Give one or two sprays | Soak the beans until they look wet |
| Stir or swirl, then grind right away | Mist a full hopper of beans for later |
| Fill the sprayer with fresh water each time | Leave water sitting in the sprayer |
How Many Sprays Should You Use?
One or two sprays is enough for one dose. The beans should look almost dry, with only a few tiny drops. More water does not help, and too much can make grounds cake inside the grinder or even cause rust over time.
Terzulli told Epicurious that "you only need one or two drops of water". Hendon's own tip is to start small and build up slowly.
The study authors are clear about the risk. Writing for the SCA, they warn that "too much water may promote caking or corrosion within the grinder".
So treat the mist as a light touch. If the beans look wet, use fewer sprays next time.
What Is Single Dosing, and Why Does It Suit RDT?
Single dosing means you weigh one dose of beans, grind all of it, and keep no beans waiting in the hopper. The rest of the bag stays sealed. It suits RDT because you only mist the beans you are about to grind.
Home Grounds says single dosing helps you "avoid the risk of beans going stale in a hopper" (Home Grounds). It also makes it easy to switch to a different coffee for the next cup.
RDT and a full hopper do not mix well. Neither expert in the Epicurious piece suggests misting a big batch of beans, or beans you will not grind right away.
One of them warns that "keeping coffee wet for extended periods of time is not recommended". So mist each dose in the cup, just before it goes in.
Does RDT Work With Manual and Electric Grinders?
Yes. The dosing cup spout tips beans into the throat of a manual or an electric grinder, and the mist goes on the beans, not the grinder. RDT helps most for espresso, pour-over and moka pot, while in a French press it mainly cuts the mess.
Hendon told Daily Coffee News that the brew gains most where water passes through the coffee, like espresso or a stovetop moka pot. He said the brew gains little in a French press.
| Brew method | Does RDT help the brew? |
|---|---|
| Espresso | Yes. Hendon says espresso has the worst clumping, so it gains the most. |
| Pour-over | It can, since water flows through the coffee |
| Moka pot | It can, since water flows through the coffee |
| French press | Not much for the brew, but it still means less mess |
For an electric grinder, keep water away from the burrs. The product page for our InstaCuppa Electric Conical Burr Grinder says to clean the burrs with a dry brush only, never water.
For a hand grinder, the routine is the same. Mist the beans in the cup, then pour them into the grinder and turn the crank.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is RDT in coffee?
RDT stands for the Ross Droplet Technique. You add a tiny bit of water to whole beans just before you grind them. The water lets the static charge escape, so grounds stop clinging to the grinder.
Is a coffee dosing cup the same as a coffee cup?
No. A coffee dosing cup holds one dose of beans so you can weigh it and pour it into the grinder. The InstaCuppa dosing cup is not a drinking mug.
How many sprays should I use for RDT?
One or two sprays is plenty for one dose. Hold the bottle upright about an inch above the beans. The beans should not look wet.
Can water damage my grinder?
Too much water can. The study authors warn it may cause caking or corrosion inside the grinder. So mist the beans in the cup, never the grinder, and clean the burrs with a dry brush.
What is single dosing?
Single dosing means you weigh one dose of beans, grind all of it, and keep no beans in the hopper. The rest of the bag stays sealed, and RDT fits this style well.
Does RDT work for French press?
It still cuts the mess at the grinder. But the study author says the brew itself gains little in a French press, because the coffee just soaks in water.
