Soda Maker CO2 Cylinder vs Capsule: Real Cost Per Glass (India)

The CO2 cylinder versus capsule choice is the first one every Indian soda maker buyer faces. Both make sparkling water. Both use food grade CO2. The gap is in how you get the gas and what that really costs.

I have used both systems at home for over a year. This page shows the sums. Every price below was read off Amazon India or off our own store on 13 September 2026, and the source is named next to it. I sell the capsule system, so check the numbers yourself.

The Basic Math: Cost Per Bottle

On gas you can actually buy, the two are level. That is the part most guides get wrong, including an earlier version of this one. A cylinder only pulls clearly ahead if a dealer near you will exchange an empty for less than the Rs 725 that a new one costs. Many dealers will. Many towns have no dealer at all.

Mr. Butler prints the refill rule on its own listing: an empty cylinder "can be exchanged for refills at a store close to you", and the listing then names the districts where that is possible. So the honest answer is that the cylinder price depends on your pin code, and the capsule price does not.

The Hidden Costs Nobody Mentions

But per-bottle cost is not the full picture. Here is what cylinder users pay beyond the refill price:

1. Travel Cost: Rs 100-300 Per Trip

Your nearest dealer may be 30 to 45 minutes away. An auto, petrol or a cab adds Rs 100 to Rs 300 each way and back. Refill twice a month and that is Rs 200 to Rs 600 in travel alone.

2. Time Cost: 1 to 3 Hours Per Trip

Drive there. Wait. Drive back. Some trips end with "out of stock, come next week". That trip still costs you two hours and the fare.

3. Downtime: 0 to 14 Days Without Soda

You run out on Saturday. The dealer is shut on Sunday. Delivery takes three to seven days. The machine sits idle and you buy plastic bottles again.

4. Availability Risk

This one is checkable. Mr. Butler lists its refill points district by district on its own Amazon listing, and the list is a list, not a map of the country. If your district is not on it, there is no exchange near you. Smaller towns often have none.

Total Cost Comparison (Per Month)

Here are the sums for one 500 ml glass a day. The gas prices are checked. The travel and time numbers are assumptions, and I have marked them so you can swap in your own.

Gas alone, the two are within Rs 2 a glass of each other. Count one refill trip and the cylinder becomes the dearer option on these assumptions. If your dealer is round the corner and exchanges an empty cheaply, flip it back the other way. That single fact, how far your dealer is, decides this whole question.

How Much Does a CO2 Cylinder for a Soda Maker Cost in India?

A new Mr. Butler CO2 cylinder costs Rs 725 each when you buy the 6-pack at Rs 4,349, or Rs 910 for a single cylinder bundled with a 500 ml bottle (Amazon India, 13 September 2026). Each cylinder holds 270 g of CO2 and makes 20 to 25 litres of soda, which the maker puts at about 125 glasses. That works out to roughly Rs 14.50 to Rs 22.75 per 500 ml glass.

Exchanging an empty cylinder at a dealer costs less than buying a new one. We could not find a published national exchange price, so we have not put a number on it. Mr. Butler runs a refill helpline on 1800 103 1557 and lists its refill districts on its product listing. Ring them with your pin code before you buy a cylinder machine.

Which Should You Choose?

• Choose a cylinder if a dealer is within 15 minutes of you, you drink two or more glasses a day, and the refill trip does not bother you.
• Choose capsules if you live anywhere else, you travel, or you are tired of hunting for a refill.
