Multipurpose Cooker Not Working? 8 Fixes Before You Return It

1. Cooker Not Heating

This is the most common complaint. The cooker is plugged in but nothing happens. No heat, no light.

Fix:

  • Check if the power cord is fully pushed into the base. It detaches easily. Push it in until it clicks.
  • Try a different wall socket. The socket itself might be faulty.
  • Make sure the dial is turned to HIGH or LOW — not sitting between settings.
  • Check if the socket switch is ON. Sounds obvious, but it catches people.

If none of these work, the heating element may be defective. Contact support for a warranty claim.

2. Glass Lid Does Not Fit Properly

The lid sits loosely or rattles during steaming.

Fix: The lid sits on the pot rim, not inside it. If you have a tray (steamer, egg, or idli) on top, the lid goes on the tray — not on the pot. The tray changes the resting surface. Make sure the lid is centered on whatever surface it sits on.

Some rattling during boiling is normal. Steam escapes through the vent hole. This is a safety feature, not a defect.

3. Food Sticking to the Pot

Rice or eggs stick to the bottom. Hard to clean after cooking.

Fix (Steel version):

  • Add 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee before cooking rice. This creates a barrier.
  • Add slightly more water than the recipe says. Extra water stops sticking.
  • Do not let the pot boil dry. When water runs out, food burns and sticks.
  • Soak the pot in warm water for 10 minutes after cooking. Food lifts off easily.

Fix (Non-Stick version): If food sticks to a non-stick surface, the coating is worn. Use only wooden or silicone utensils. Never use steel wool. If the coating is badly scratched, it is time for a replacement.

4. Steamer Tray Wobbles

The tray does not sit flat on the pot rim.

Fix: Make sure the pot is filled with water before placing the tray. The weight of water stabilizes the pot. Also check that the tray is centered on the rim. It should rest evenly on all sides. If the tray is bent, gently press it flat on a hard surface.

5. Food Undercooked After Full Cooking Time

You followed the recipe time but the food is still raw or hard.

Fix:

  • Are you using LOW (300W) when the recipe says HIGH (600W)? This doubles cooking time.
  • Did you fill the pot to maximum? A full 1.2L pot takes longer to heat than a half-full pot.
  • Check your altitude. Higher altitudes lower the boiling point. Water boils at 95 degrees Celsius in hill stations vs 100 degrees at sea level. Food takes longer to cook.
  • For dal: did you soak it first? Unsoaked dal takes much longer than 20-25 minutes.

6. Power Cord Feels Loose

The cord does not stay firmly connected to the base.

Fix: The detachable cord has a specific orientation. Rotate it slightly while pushing in. It should click into place. If it still feels loose, check for dust or debris in the connector. Blow it clean. If the connector is physically damaged, contact support for a replacement cord.

7. Burning Smell on First Use

The cooker smells like plastic or chemicals when you first turn it on.

Fix: This is normal for new appliances. Factory residue and packaging oils burn off during the first heating. Run an empty cycle: fill with water, boil on HIGH, dump the water. Repeat once. The smell goes away after 1-2 cycles.

If the burning smell continues after 3+ uses, something else is wrong. Contact support.

8. Cooker Turns Off by Itself

The cooker shuts down mid-cooking without warning.

Fix: This is usually the boil-dry protection kicking in. When the water runs out, the pot gets too hot. The safety switch cuts power to prevent damage. Add more water and restart.

If it turns off with plenty of water still inside, the thermostat may be faulty. This is a warranty issue. Contact support.

When to Use the Warranty

Try all the fixes above first. Most issues are user errors, not defects. But if the problem continues, here is when to claim warranty:

  • Heating element dead — no heat even with power cord properly connected
  • Thermostat faulty — shuts off randomly with water still inside
  • Physical damage on arrival — cracked lid, dented pot, missing accessories
  • Power cord defective — frayed, loose connector, no power flow

InstaCuppa offers a 1-year warranty. Email support@instacuppastore.com with your order number and a photo of the issue. Response time is usually 24-48 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for the cooker to smell on first use?

Yes. Boil plain water twice and dump it. The factory residue burns off. The smell is gone after 1-2 cycles.

My rice keeps sticking. What am I doing wrong?

Add a tablespoon of oil before cooking. Use slightly more water. Do not let the pot boil dry. Soak the pot in warm water after cooking for easy cleanup.

Can I get a replacement power cord?

Yes. Email support@instacuppastore.com with your order number. Replacement cords are sent free under warranty.

How do I know if my non-stick coating is worn out?

Signs: food starts sticking where it did not before, visible scratches or peeling, gray patches on the black surface. If you see these, it is time for a new pot.
