What Is a Cabinet Dustbin (Hidden Dustbin)?

A cabinet dustbin is a hidden dustbin that sits inside a kitchen cabinet. It goes under the sink or next to it. Close the door and the bin is hidden. Open the door and it is right there. Some people call it a concealed dustbin or a built-in dustbin. It suits the modular kitchens with built-in cabinets that many Indian flats now have.

Cabinet bins solve two problems. They hide the trash bin. They save floor space. Your kitchen looks cleaner and feels bigger.

What Are the Types of Dustbin Inside a Kitchen Cabinet?

There are three main ways to keep a dustbin inside a kitchen cabinet:

Why Modern Indian Kitchens Choose Cabinet Bins

Three reasons cabinet bins are showing up in new Indian flats:

1. Modular kitchens have cabinet space. Most new flats in metro cities have under-counter cabinets. The bin fits inside space that would sit empty.

2. Small kitchens need floor space. A bin on the floor sits where you walk and work. A bin inside a cabinet uses space that was already there.

3. Looks matter. A visible bin clashes with a clean kitchen look. Hiding it inside a cabinet keeps things neat.

4. Waste sorting rules. India's Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 came into force on 1 April 2026. They replace the 2016 rules. Sorting waste at source into four streams is now mandatory: wet, dry, sanitary and special care waste. Wet waste means kitchen waste, peels, meat and flowers. Dry waste means plastic, paper, metal and glass. A kitchen makes both every day, so a cabinet with room for two bins makes the sorting easy.

Can We Keep a Dustbin in the Kitchen? Where Is Best?

Quick answer: Yes, you can keep a dustbin in the kitchen. Peels, scraps and leftovers start there, so the bin should be close to where you cut and cook. The best spot is the cabinet under the sink or the one beside it. Scraps go from the chopping board to the bin in one step. The sink is close, so you can rinse the bin with ease. Keep the bin away from the gas stove and other heat.

How Do You Fit a Dustbin Inside a Cabinet?

1. Measure your door — note its height and width, and the depth behind it. Check them against the size of the bin before you buy
2. Pick how to mount — clip hanger (no damage) or sticky tape (stronger hold)
3. Clean the cabinet door — wipe with damp cloth, dry completely
4. Position the hanger — high enough to reach, but leave room for the lid to open fully under the shelf or counter
5. Attach and test — clip or stick it on. Open and close the door. Check it does not hit pipes or shelves
6. Add a bin bag — 7L size, fold edges over the rim
