Hygiene note: An older version of this page said a bin lid holds "400 germs per square cm", more than a toilet seat, from a "University of Arizona study". We could not find that study, so we took the number out on 28 September 2026. The simple point still stands. A lid you never touch is one less dirty surface for your hands. What Size Dustbin Does Your Kitchen Need?

Bin size depends on family size and how often you empty it. Here is a simple guide:

What Should You Check Before Buying?

Check these five things before you buy. I test every bin on these factors.

1. Check the lid seal — a tight lid keeps smells in and bugs out. Sensor and pedal bins with gasket seals work best for wet waste
2. Check bag fit — 9L fits standard small bags. 15L fits medium bags. Bigger bins need special bags that cost more
3. Check battery type — use the size your bin asks for (our bins take 2 AA) and pick alkaline. Alkaline cells hold more energy than zinc-carbon ("heavy duty") cells, so they last longer. Weak batteries can make a sensor lid act up
