Which Dustbins Fit Under Indian Kitchen Sinks?
Indian modular kitchen cabinets come in 45 cm, 60 cm, or 90 cm widths. Here is what fits each:

Pipe clearance tip: Measure from the back of the door to the nearest pipe. You need at least 15 cm of space for a 7L bin. If pipes are closer, pick a slim wall-mount bin instead.
The Two-Bin System: Wet and Dry Segregation
If your cabinet is 60 cm or wider, put two bins side by side. One for wet waste. One for dry waste. You sort at the source. No need to sort later.
Wet waste bin (left): Vegetable peels, food scraps, tea bags, eggshells. Use a sensor or sealed-lid bin. Empty daily.
Dry waste bin (right): Paper, plastic wrappers, cardboard, bottles. A simple hanging bin without a sensor is fine. Empty every 2-3 days.
Two bins cut the smell, because wet waste stays sealed and goes out daily. But two bins do not meet the rule, and this is where most kitchen guides are wrong.
The rule asks for three streams, not two. India's Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 (S.O. 1357(E), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, 8 April 2016), Rule 4(1)(a), says every waste generator shall:
"segregate and store the waste generated by them in three separate streams namely bio-degradable, non bio-degradable and domestic hazardous wastes in suitable bins and handover segregated wastes to authorised waste pickers or waste collectors".
Domestic hazardous waste is the third stream: old batteries, tube lights and CFLs, expired medicines, paint tins, pesticide bottles. It is small in volume, so a lidded box at the back of the same cabinet is enough. Empty it when the collection van asks for it, not weekly. Rule 4(1)(b) adds one more thing almost nobody does: used sanitary waste must be wrapped and placed in the dry bin, not the wet one.
So the honest layout for a 60 cm cabinet is a wet bin, a dry bin and a small hazardous box. In a 45 cm cabinet, run one wet bin on the door and keep the dry and hazardous containers outside the cabinet.
5 Mistakes to Avoid with Under-Sink Bins
These are the most common mistakes I see. Each has a simple fix.
- Overloading the hanger — most hangers hold up to 3 kg. A full 9L bin with wet waste can weigh 4 to 5 kg. Empty it before it gets too heavy. Or use a sticky mount for extra support
- Ignoring moisture — under-sink areas get damp from pipes. Place a silica gel packet next to the bin. For sensor bins, check the battery seal often
- Using bags that are too big — large bags bunch up and block the lid. Use the right size: 7L or 9L
- Sensor facing the wrong way — if you mount a sensor bin on the door, point the sensor toward you. Not at the cabinet wall
- Skipping the area behind the bin — liquid can drip between the bin and the wall. Pull the bin out each month and wipe the cabinet
Maintenance: Under-sink bins need cleaning twice as often as floor bins. The closed cabinet traps moisture and blocks airflow. Clean every 3 to 4 days. Floor bins only need a weekly wipe.
