What Is a Strawberry Waffle and How Do You Make It?

A strawberry waffle is a plain crispy waffle topped with fresh strawberries, a light sweetener, and sometimes cream or yogurt. The contrast of a warm crispy waffle with cold, juicy strawberries is what makes it special. It looks like a cafe dessert but takes 10 minutes at home.

Strawberries are available in India from November to March in most parts of the country. That is the best time to make strawberry waffles. The strawberries are sweet, firm, and full of flavour. Out of season, you can use frozen strawberries or substitute with mango or banana.

Strawberry Waffle Recipe (makes 4 mini waffles)

Prep time: 5 minutes | Cook time: 4 minutes per waffle | Total: 20 minutes

Waffle Batter:

  • 1 cup atta or maida
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • Pinch of salt

Strawberry Topping:

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1 tsp honey or sugar (optional - skip if strawberries are sweet)
  • 2 tbsp fresh cream or curd (optional)
  • Few mint leaves (optional, for garnish)

How to Make a Quick Strawberry Compote

A compote is just cooked strawberries with sugar. It takes 5 minutes and makes the topping thicker and more jam-like. This works great when strawberries are not very sweet or when you want a sauce that stays on top of the waffle without sliding off.

  1. Place sliced strawberries in a small pan with 1 teaspoon of sugar
  2. Heat on medium flame for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally
  3. The strawberries will release juice and soften. Mash a few with a spoon
  4. Remove from heat. Cool slightly. Spoon over hot waffles

The compote keeps in the fridge for 3 days. Make a big batch and use it all week on waffles, toast, or curd.

When to Buy Strawberries in India

Fresh strawberries in India are available from November to March in hill stations like Mahabaleshwar, Ooty, Nainital, and Himachal Pradesh. These reach city markets from December onwards. The sweetest and cheapest time to buy is January to February. Rs 40 to Rs 80 per 250g punnet depending on season and city.

Out of season, you can use frozen strawberries (available at D-Mart, Big Basket) or substitute with fresh mango slices in summer. A mango waffle with honey has the same visual impact and tastes even better for the Indian palate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen strawberries for a strawberry waffle?

Yes. Thaw frozen strawberries in a bowl for 20 minutes at room temperature. Drain the excess liquid. Then use them as a topping or cook into a compote. Frozen strawberries work especially well in the compote method since they are already soft.

When are strawberries available in India?

Fresh Indian strawberries are available from November to March. The best quality and lowest prices are in January and February. They come from Mahabaleshwar (Maharashtra), Ooty (Tamil Nadu), Himachal Pradesh, and Nainital (Uttarakhand).

How do I keep my waffle crispy under the strawberry topping?

Add the strawberry topping at the last moment, just before serving. Wet toppings soften waffles quickly. If you add the topping 5 minutes before eating, the waffle will be soggy. Serve immediately after topping for the best texture.

Is a strawberry waffle healthy?

A strawberry waffle made with atta batter and topped with fresh strawberries (no cream, minimal sugar) is a healthy breakfast. Strawberries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. One serving has about 200 to 250 calories. Adding whipped cream or Nutella makes it a dessert.

What is a strawberry compote and how do I make it?

A compote is fresh fruit cooked briefly with sugar. For strawberry compote, heat sliced strawberries with 1 teaspoon of sugar in a pan for 3 to 4 minutes. The fruit releases juice and thickens slightly. It is perfect as a waffle topping because it does not slide off the way fresh slices do.
