Sattu for Weight Loss: Does Roasted Gram Flour Actually Work?

Glass of sattu drink for weight loss with roasted chana, sattu flour, lemon and black salt on a kitchen table

You have heard this before. Drink sattu water in the morning. Lose weight.

But is that actually true? Or just another kitchen myth?

The short answer: yes. Used right, sattu for weight loss works. But not by magic. It works because specific nutrients reduce hunger, so you eat less.

Here is what the research says. And how to actually use sattu to lose weight.

Sattu is roasted whole Bengal gram (chana) ground into a flour, eaten across Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, where it is also called chatu or cholar chatu. Is sattu good for weight loss? Yes. Whole Bengal gram carries 18.77 g of protein and 25.22 g of total dietary fibre per 100 g in the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017, and roasting drives off the moisture, so sattu flour lands near 20 g of protein and 27 g of fibre per 100 g. Chickpeas measure 28 on the glycemic index in the international tables, which is low. That combination keeps you full on fewer calories. Sattu supports weight loss — it does not "burn fat" on its own.
Gold Nugget: Sattu Can Cut 300 to 400 Calories from Your Day Without Dieting

One glass of sattu water in the morning has about 80 to 100 kcal. Its protein and fiber keep you full well into late morning. That makes it easy to skip the 10 AM snack — often 200 to 300 kcal of biscuits, chips, or sugary tea. Over 30 days, that can add up to 6,000 to 9,000 kcal avoided. One kg of body fat stores roughly 7,700 kcal — the classic estimate in nutrition science (see Sources). So this one habit alone can support up to about 1 kg of fat loss per month.

Why Sattu Helps with Weight Loss

1. High Protein Keeps You Full

Protein is the most filling macronutrient. It reduces hunger hormones like ghrelin.

Sattu has about 20 g of protein per 100 g. The Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 measure whole Bengal gram, the pulse sattu is made from, at 18.77 g of protein per 100 g (food code B002, six regions); roasting removes most of the 8.56 per cent moisture, which concentrates that to roughly 20 g in the finished flour. You will see 25 g quoted widely online — that figure is not in the national table, and we have corrected it here. At 20 g per 100 g, a 70 g serving of sattu carries about 14 g of protein, and the 2 tablespoons in a glass of sattu water carry about 4 g.

When you start your morning with protein, you eat less during the rest of the day. A 2013 trial in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition tested a 35 g protein breakfast. It raised fullness through the day and cut evening snacking on high-fat, high-sugar foods.

2. High Fiber Slows Digestion

Sattu is far higher in fibre than most people think: whole Bengal gram measures 25.22 g of total dietary fibre per 100 g in the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017, of which 22.70 g is insoluble, so the roasted flour sits near 27 g. That is more than the 18 g usually quoted, and it is the single best reason sattu keeps you full. Fibre slows the movement of food through the stomach.

This means glucose enters the blood slowly. Blood sugar stays stable. No energy crash. No sudden hunger spike.

Stable blood sugar = fewer cravings = fewer calories eaten.

3. Low Glycemic Index

Roasted chana, the base of sattu, comes from the chickpea, and chickpeas measure a glycemic index of 28 plus or minus 9 in the international tables published in Diabetes Care (Atkinson, Foster-Powell & Brand-Miller, 2008). Anything under 55 counts as low GI.

White rice has a GI of 70 to 89. Maida has a GI above 70.

Low GI foods cause a slow, steady rise in blood sugar. High GI foods cause a sharp spike, followed by a crash that makes you hungry again.

Replacing a high-GI breakfast with sattu means you stay full longer and crave food less.

4. Good Replacement for High-Calorie Breakfast Options

Compare a common Indian breakfast:

  • 2 plain parathas with butter: ~500 kcal
  • Poha with chai: ~350 kcal
  • 1 glass sattu water + 2 sattu parathas: ~350 to 400 kcal but 3x the protein

You get equal or fewer calories from sattu with far more protein and fiber. The sattu meal keeps you fuller for longer.

Sattu Se Weight Badhta Hai Ya Ghatta Hai?

Sattu se weight ghat sakta hai, badh nahi sakta — agar aap use sahi tarike se lete hain. Sattu ka ek glass paani wala drink sirf 80 se 100 calorie ka hota hai, aur usme protein aur fibre hone ki wajah se bhookh kam lagti hai. Isliye aap din bhar mein kam khate hain, aur wajan ghatta hai.

Sattu se weight tab badhta hai jab aap usme cheeni ya gud milate hain, ya sattu ka laddoo aur halwa khate hain. Ek sattu laddoo lagbhag 160 calorie ka hota hai. Sattu paratha mein do chammach ghee daal diya to wahi paratha 250 se 270 calorie ka ho jaata hai.

Seedha niyam: weight loss ke liye sattu ko namak, nimbu aur bhune jeere ke saath paani mein piyein. Weight gain ke liye sattu ko doodh, gud aur dry fruits ke saath lein. Ek hi aata, do alag natije — farak sirf isme hai ki aap uske saath kya milate hain.

In English: sattu reduces weight, not increases it, as long as you drink it with water, lemon and black salt rather than with sugar, jaggery, milk or ghee. The flour is the same either way; what you mix into it decides the calories.

Is Chana Sattu Good for Weight Loss?

Yes. Chana sattu is the best sattu for weight loss, because chana sattu is the high-protein one. Sattu made from roasted whole Bengal gram carries about 20 g of protein and about 27 g of fibre per 100 g, while barley sattu, the other traditional kind, is a cereal flour with roughly half the protein. If a pack does not say chana, check before you buy.

The names change by state and they all mean the same flour. In Bihar and Uttar Pradesh it is sattu or chana sattu. In West Bengal the same roasted gram flour is called chatu, and cholar chatu is chana chatu — cholar being the Bengali word for the gram. Nothing about the nutrition changes with the name.

How to use it for weight loss is the same whichever name you bought it under: 2 tablespoons in a glass of cold water with lemon, black salt and roasted cumin, drunk in the morning, at about 80 to 100 kcal a glass. The protein and fibre are what do the work, not the water.

What Is the Glycemic Index of Sattu?

The glycemic index of sattu is taken to be about 28, the figure measured for chickpeas (28 plus or minus 9) in the international glycemic index tables in Diabetes Care (Atkinson, Foster-Powell & Brand-Miller, 2008). Any food under 55 is classed low GI, so sattu sits firmly in the low band. For scale, the same tables put lentils at 32, kidney beans at 24 and sucrose at 65.

One honest caveat, because it matters for a flour. That 28 was measured on cooked chickpeas, not on roasted chana ground into a powder. Grinding a pulse into fine flour breaks the food structure and makes the starch easier to digest, which pushes GI up — the same effect that puts ragi mudde at 98.2 while whole finger millet is far lower. Sattu flour itself has not been measured with the standard protocol, so treat 28 as the pulse figure and the sensible estimate, not a lab value for the powder.

Two things keep your own cup low whatever the exact number. Do not add sugar or jaggery — that is the single change that turns a low-GI drink into a high-GI one. And drink sattu with the fibre in it, mixed into water, rather than as a strained clear drink.

How to Use Sattu for Weight Loss

Best Way: Morning Sattu Water

Drink sattu water on an empty stomach every morning.

Recipe: Mix 2 tbsp sattu with 1 glass cold water. Add lemon juice, black salt, and cumin powder. Drink within 10 minutes of making it. Want variety? Try these 7 sattu drink recipes.

This is the most calorie-efficient use of sattu. You get protein and fiber with under 100 kcal. Your stomach feels full. Your energy is steady until late morning.

Second Best: Sattu as a Meal Replacement for One Meal

Replace one full meal with a sattu-based meal.

Good options:

  • Sattu paratha (2 pieces, no extra ghee) for breakfast: ~460 kcal, 18 to 20 g protein
  • Sattu chilla (2 pieces) with curd: ~350 kcal, 20 g protein
  • Sattu soup for dinner: ~120 kcal, 8 g protein

What to Avoid

  • Do not make sattu laddoo or sattu halwa if you are trying to lose weight. These have extra ghee and jaggery. Calories add up fast.
  • Do not add sugar to sattu water. Use black salt and lemon instead.
  • Do not use sattu as an excuse to eat more. It is a tool to reduce hunger. Not a magic food.

7-Day Sattu Weight Loss Meal Plan

This is a simple plan. Add sattu to your existing meals. Do not starve yourself.

Every morning (all 7 days): 1 glass sattu water on an empty stomach. Wait 30 minutes before eating anything else.

Day 1 — Breakfast: Sattu paratha (2, less ghee) with curd. Skip the 10 AM snack — you will not be hungry.

Day 2 — Breakfast: Sattu chilla (2 pieces) with mint chutney.

Day 3 — Dinner: Replace dinner with sattu soup and a small salad. A light dinner supports weight loss.

Day 4 — Breakfast: Sattu paratha (2) with pickle and curd.

Day 5 — Snack replacement: If you feel hungry at 4 PM, drink sattu water instead of eating biscuits or tea with sugar.

Day 6 — Breakfast: Sattu roti (2 rotis with sattu mixed in the dough) with dal.

Day 7 — Rest day: Just the morning sattu water. Eat your normal meals. Notice how much less hungry you feel through the day.

After 7 days, continue with at least 1 sattu meal or drink per day as a long-term habit.

Sattu Calorie Count

Here are the calories for each sattu recipe when made for weight loss (less ghee, no sugar):

  • Sattu water (1 glass, 2 tbsp sattu): ~80 to 100 kcal
  • Sattu paratha (1 piece, 1 tsp ghee): ~250 to 270 kcal
  • Sattu chilla (1 piece, no oil): ~130 kcal
  • Sattu roti (1 roti): ~180 kcal
  • Sattu soup (1 bowl): ~110 to 130 kcal
  • Sattu laddoo (1 piece, made with ghee + jaggery): ~160 kcal — avoid for weight loss

Sattu vs Other Popular Weight Loss Foods

People often ask how sattu compares to other popular options. Here is a simple comparison.

Sattu vs Protein Powder: Sattu has about 25 g protein per 100 g. Whey protein has 70 to 80 g per 100 g. But sattu also has fiber, iron, and natural food compounds. Whey is processed. Sattu is a whole food. Sattu also costs Rs 30 to 40 per 100 g. Whey costs Rs 150 to 300 per 100 g.

Sattu vs Oats: Both are good for weight loss. Oats have more complex carbs. Sattu has more protein. If you want more protein and less carbs, sattu wins. If you want a smoother breakfast, oats are easier to eat.

Sattu vs Ragi: Ragi is a calcium-rich millet. Sattu is a protein-rich legume flour. For hunger control, sattu's extra protein wins. We covered the millet side in Ragi for Weight Loss: Does It Really Help?

Sattu vs Besan: Sattu is roasted. Besan is raw. Roasting makes sattu easier to digest. Both have similar nutrition. But sattu can be eaten raw — just mixed with water. Besan must be cooked. For a quick morning drink, sattu is the better choice.

Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Adding sugar to sattu water. Some people add jaggery or sugar to make it taste better. This turns a 100 kcal drink into a 200 kcal drink. For weight loss, use lemon and black salt — they are calorie-free and taste great.
  2. Eating sattu sweets and calling it healthy. Sattu laddoo and halwa are made with ghee and jaggery. They are nutritious but high in calories. They are not weight loss foods.
  3. Not drinking enough water. Sattu is high in fiber. Fiber needs water to work. Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water per day when eating sattu. Less water with high fiber causes constipation.
  4. Expecting results in 3 days. Sattu helps by reducing hunger. The weight loss happens because you eat less over weeks. Give it at least 3 to 4 weeks to see clear results.
  5. Using too much ghee in sattu paratha. A traditional sattu paratha uses 1 to 2 tsp ghee per paratha. For weight loss, use 1/2 tsp. Or dry roast the paratha for the first minute before adding ghee.

Who Should Eat Sattu for Weight Loss

Sattu works well for:

  • People who snack too much between meals
  • People who feel hungry 1 to 2 hours after breakfast
  • People with diabetes who want a high-protein, low-GI breakfast
  • People who want to reduce sugar and refined carbohydrates
  • Vegetarians who struggle to get enough protein

Sattu may not be ideal for:

  • People with kidney disease (high protein requires kidneys to work harder — check with a doctor)
  • People with severe IBS who react badly to legumes

Common Questions

Is sattu good for weight loss?

Yes. Sattu is high in protein (about 20 g per 100 g, from 18.77 g in whole Bengal gram in the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017, concentrated by roasting) and very high in fibre (about 27 g). Both reduce hunger. Chickpeas, the pulse it is made from, measure a low glycemic index of 28. You snack less, so you eat fewer calories. It supports weight loss as part of a balanced diet — it is not a magic fat-burner.

How much sattu should I eat per day for weight loss?

Start with 2 tbsp in the morning as a drink. You can increase to 3 to 4 tbsp split between morning and evening. Do not eat more than 6 tbsp per day — too much fiber at once causes bloating.

Can I drink sattu at night for weight loss?

Yes. Sattu water or sattu soup at night is actually very good for weight loss. A light, high-protein dinner keeps you full until morning. It reduces late-night snacking. Mix with warm water at night — cold water at night can cause discomfort for some people.

Can I drink sattu in the evening?

Yes. An evening glass of sattu water is one of the easiest ways to kill the 6 PM biscuit habit, at about 80 to 100 calories. Mix 2 tablespoons of sattu into cold or lukewarm water with lemon, black salt and roasted cumin, and drink it within ten minutes of mixing so it does not settle. Avoid it with milk, jaggery or sugar in the evening, which is what turns the same flour into a weight-gain drink.

How much protein is in 70 g of sattu?

About 14 g. Sattu is roughly 20 g of protein per 100 g, based on the 18.77 g measured for whole Bengal gram in the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 plus the moisture that roasting drives off, so 70 g works out to about 14 g of protein. The 2 tablespoons in a typical glass of sattu water are closer to 20 g of flour and about 4 g of protein.

How long does it take to lose weight with sattu?

You may notice reduced hunger within the first week. Visible weight loss usually takes 3 to 4 weeks of consistent use. Results depend on your total diet and activity level. Sattu is a support tool — it works best with a balanced diet and daily movement.
