Morning Drink for Weight Loss India: What to Drink in the Morning

A morning drink for weight loss is a drink with few or no calories that you have first thing in the morning, in place of sweet chai, juice or sugary coffee. What to drink in the morning? Start with a glass of plain water. Then pick one drink with no sugar, such as warm lemon water, green tea, jeera water or black coffee. No drink melts fat by itself. Most of the gain comes from the sugar you skip.
What you drink first thing in the morning is a small habit you repeat every day. A good morning drink adds little or no sugar. Some drinks may also help a little with hunger or blood sugar, but the effects in studies are small.
The best morning drinks for weight loss have very few calories. Some have zero. They help mostly by taking the place of sweet drinks. Below, each drink comes with what the research really says.
Here are 8 of the best morning drinks for weight loss that Indian people can make easily at home.
Many Indians drink 2 or more cups of sweet chai a day. A cup with 2 tsp of sugar and some milk has about 80 calories. The 2 tsp of sugar alone is about 33 calories, and 100 ml of whole milk adds about 63 (Health Canada Canadian Nutrient File). Two cups a day is about 160 calories. Over a year, that is 58,400 calories. Swap those 2 cups for green tea, warm lemon water or jeera water with no sugar, and you skip those calories. Do not expect fast results. A model by US National Institutes of Health scientists found that body weight responds slowly to a change in calories, with "half times of about 1 year" (Hall et al., The Lancet, 2011). So the change shows up over months, not weeks.
Why Your First Morning Drink Matters
The morning drink matters because it is the first thing you have after 7 to 8 hours of sleep with no water. It is also the drink most people have every single day, so small calories add up.
A good morning drink gives you water with little or no sugar. A sweet drink does the opposite. Sweet chai, juice or sweet coffee can add 100 to 200 calories before you have eaten any food. A glass of orange juice alone has about 118 calories.
The habit is simple: drink something with no sugar first, then eat breakfast. Many people wait 20 to 30 minutes in between, but that gap is a habit, not a rule.
What Is the First Thing to Drink in the Morning?
The first thing to drink in the morning can simply be a glass of plain water. Water has zero calories and no sugar. It is also the cheapest morning drink for weight loss. In a 12-week study of 48 adults aged 55 to 75 on a low-calorie diet, people who drank 500 ml of water before each main meal lost about 2 kg more than people who did not (Dennis et al., Obesity, 2010).
That study was small, and everyone in it was also on a diet. So morning water for weight loss is a helper, not a cure. A good order for an empty stomach drink is: one glass of water first, then one of the 8 drinks below.
8 Best Morning Drinks for Weight Loss in India
1. Warm Water with Lemon
Warm lemon water is the most popular morning drink for weight loss in India. It costs almost nothing and takes 1 minute to make. The juice of half a lemon has only about 5 calories. Lemon juice has 22 calories and 38.7 mg of vitamin C per 100 g (Canadian Nutrient File).
Warm lemon water gives you water after sleep and a small amount of vitamin C. Many people say it feels good on the stomach, but we found no strong study showing that lemon water burns fat. Its real job is to replace a sweet drink. Read more in lemon water benefits.
How to make: boil water in a kettle. Let it cool to warm (not hot). Squeeze half a lemon into it. Drink slowly. Do this before eating anything else.
2. Green Tea
Green tea is one of the most studied morning drinks for weight loss, but the result is small. A Cochrane review of trials in overweight adults found that green tea preparations "appear to induce a small, statistically non-significant weight loss" that is "not likely to be clinically important" (Jurgens et al., 2012). The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says the catechins and caffeine in green tea "may have a modest effect on body weight" (NCCIH, green tea). More in green tea for weight loss.
Green tea also has a small amount of caffeine — enough to help you feel alert in the morning without the big spike and crash of strong coffee or tea with sugar.
How to make: steep 1 tsp of green tea leaves or 1 tea bag in hot (not boiling) water for 3 to 5 minutes. Do not use boiling water, as it can make green tea taste bitter. Drink plain, no sugar or honey. The taste is light and slightly grassy. Most people get used to it within 1 to 2 weeks.
3. Warm Ginger Water
Ginger water in the morning is an old Indian home drink. Research on it is small. In a pilot study of 10 overweight men, a hot drink with 2 g of ginger powder at breakfast gave lower hunger ratings than breakfast without it (Mansour et al., Metabolism, 2012). That is a feeling of less hunger, not proof that people ate less.
Many people like warm ginger water on an empty stomach because it tastes warm and spicy with no sugar. If it gives you heartburn, drink it after food instead.
How to make: boil 2 cups of water with 1 inch of fresh ginger (sliced). Boil for 5 minutes. Strain and drink warm. Add a squeeze of lemon if you want. No sugar.
4. Methi Water (Fenugreek Water)
Soaking methi seeds overnight and drinking the water in the morning is a common Indian habit for blood sugar and weight loss. A review of 10 trials found that fenugreek seeds lowered fasting blood sugar. The clear effect was in people with diabetes taking medium or high doses, and most trials were of low quality (Neelakantan et al., Nutrition Journal, 2014). We found no strong trial showing that methi water alone causes weight loss.
Many Indians with high blood sugar or PCOD use methi water as a daily morning habit. Be careful if you take diabetes medicine. NCCIH says "Large doses may cause a harmful drop in blood sugar" (NCCIH, fenugreek). See methi water benefits.
How to make: soak 1 tsp of methi seeds in a glass of water overnight. In the morning, drink the water and chew the seeds too. If you have diabetes, talk to your doctor before you make it a daily habit.
5. Jeera Water (Cumin Water)
Jeera water is a very simple Indian morning drink. One study gives it some support. In a 3-month trial, 88 overweight women on a weight-loss diet ate 3 g of cumin powder a day with yogurt. They lost more weight and body fat than women who had yogurt alone (Zare et al., 2014). That was cumin powder, not jeera water, so the result may not carry over fully.
In many Indian homes, jeera water is a traditional drink for gas and an upset stomach. Many people find it gentler in the morning than tea or coffee. More in jeera water benefits.
How to make: boil 1 tsp of jeera in 2 cups of water for 5 minutes. Strain and drink warm. Or soak jeera overnight in water and drink the water in the morning without boiling.
6. Cinnamon Water
Cinnamon water is popular for blood sugar, but the proof is weak. NCCIH says: "It's unclear whether cinnamon supplementation is helpful for diabetes or weight loss" (NCCIH, cinnamon). It is still a warm, sugar-free drink. Keep to food amounts, as cassia cinnamon has coumarin, which can be a problem in large amounts for people with liver disease. See cinnamon water benefits.
How to make: add 1/4 tsp of cinnamon to a glass of warm water. Stir and drink. Or add cinnamon to your green tea. Very easy and takes zero extra time.
7. Amla Juice
Amla (Indian gooseberry) is a fruit rich in vitamin C and plant compounds called polyphenols (Gul et al., Antioxidants, 2022 review). Many people drink 20 to 30 ml of fresh amla juice in the morning. We found no strong human trial showing that amla juice causes weight loss. So drink it for the vitamin C, not as a fat burner.
Amla juice is slightly sour and bitter. If it is too strong, dilute with water. Do not add sugar. If you buy packed amla juice, read the label. Some packed juices have added sugar.
8. Black Coffee
Black coffee (no milk, no sugar) is a good zero-sugar morning drink. In a classic study, 100 mg of caffeine raised resting calorie burn by 3 to 4% for 150 minutes. Taking 100 mg every 2 hours raised daytime energy use by 8 to 11% (Dulloo et al., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1989). That is a small effect. Many people also like black coffee before a workout. More in black coffee for weight loss.
The key is black coffee, with no sugar and no milk. Brewed coffee has close to zero calories (Canadian Nutrient File). The same cup with 2 tsp of sugar and milk can have 80 calories or more. That is the difference between a weight loss drink and a weight gain drink.
How to make: use an InstaCuppa French press or pour-over. Heat water to just off the boil. Brew for 3 to 4 minutes. Drink plain. Or use instant coffee with hot water — no milk, no sugar.
Best Morning Drinks for Health: How Strong Is the Evidence?
The best morning drinks for health are the ones with no added sugar. For weight loss, the evidence for each drink is mostly small. Here is a quick summary of what we found.
- Plain water: zero calories. Best tested: about 2 kg extra loss in 12 weeks with a diet (one small study).
- Green tea: many trials. The Cochrane review found a small loss that is not clinically important.
- Black coffee: close to zero calories. Caffeine raises calorie burn a little for a few hours.
- Methi water: best evidence is for blood sugar in people with diabetes, not for weight.
- Jeera: one trial of cumin powder with a diet helped. No trial of jeera water itself.
- Ginger water: one tiny study showed lower hunger ratings.
- Cinnamon water: unclear for weight loss, says NCCIH.
- Lemon water and amla juice: good low-sugar habits. No strong weight-loss trials.
How to Pick the Right Morning Drink for You
You do not need to drink all 8. Pick 1 or 2 that fit your daily life and stick to them.
If your main goal is weight loss and you are sensitive to caffeine: start with water, then warm lemon water or jeera water. Both have almost no calories and no caffeine. Green tea has some caffeine, so keep it to earlier in the day.
If you have blood sugar issues or PCOD: methi water is a popular choice, and its best evidence is for blood sugar. Talk to your doctor first if you take diabetes medicine.
If you exercise in the morning: many people like a black coffee about 30 minutes before the gym. Drink plain water after your workout.
If you have poor digestion, bloating, or gas: jeera water or ginger water are gentle, traditional choices. If the problem goes on for weeks, see a doctor.
Morning Drinks to Avoid for Weight Loss
Sweet chai: Each cup with 2 tsp of sugar and milk has about 80 calories. 2 cups is about 160 calories before breakfast. Switching to green tea saves most of that. Chai with no sugar saves about 33 calories a cup.
Fruit juice (packed or fresh): A 250 ml glass of orange juice has about 118 calories. A 250 ml glass of mango nectar has about 135 (Canadian Nutrient File). Juice has little fibre, so it fills you less than fruit. One medium orange has about 62 calories. A review of 42 studies supports limiting fruit juice to avoid extra calories (Nguyen et al., JAMA Pediatrics, 2024). Is empty stomach juice good for weight loss? Whole fruit is the better pick.
Sweet coffee (cafe style): The coffee itself has almost no calories. The milk and sugar add them. 200 ml of whole milk has about 126 calories, and each teaspoon of sugar adds about 16. Black coffee is fine.
Energy drinks: A morning energy drink often has added sugar and a lot of caffeine. Check the label for sugar per can. For weight loss, water or black coffee is the better morning drink.

Which is the best morning drink for weight loss in India?
There is no single best drink. Plain water and drinks with no sugar are the safest picks. Warm lemon water is the easiest. Green tea has the most studies, but a Cochrane review found only a small loss that is not clinically important. Methi water has its best evidence for blood sugar in people with diabetes. Pick one you enjoy and drink it without sugar.
What should I drink first thing in the morning?
Drink a glass of plain water first. It has zero calories. In one 12-week study, adults on a low-calorie diet who drank 500 ml of water before each main meal lost about 2 kg more than those who did not. After water, pick one drink with no sugar.
Does warm lemon water actually help you lose weight?
Not by itself in a big way. Warm lemon water works mainly by replacing higher calorie drinks like sweet chai or juice. The juice of half a lemon has about 5 calories and a little vitamin C. The real benefit is in what you are NOT drinking. It is a replacement, not a magic drink.
Can I drink these on an empty stomach?
Yes, most people can. Water, warm lemon water, ginger water, methi water and jeera water are all common empty stomach drinks. Green tea and black coffee are fine on an empty stomach for most people. If you feel sick or get acidity, eat a small banana first and then drink.
Is fruit juice on an empty stomach good for weight loss?
Not really. A 250 ml glass of orange juice has about 118 calories, mostly from sugar, with little fibre. A review of 42 studies supports limiting fruit juice to avoid extra calories. Eat a whole fruit instead, such as one orange with about 62 calories.
Is green tea or black coffee better in the morning for weight loss?
Both are fine if you add no sugar, and both effects are small. Green tea gave only a small, non-significant weight loss in a Cochrane review. Caffeine raised resting calorie burn by 3 to 4% for about 150 minutes in one study. Pick the one you like and can drink without sugar.
