Cinnamon Water Benefits: Dalchini Water for Sugar & Weight Loss

What Is Cinnamon Water (Dalchini Ka Pani)?

Cinnamon water, called dalchini ka pani in Hindi, is a simple drink made by steeping one cinnamon stick in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes. The warm water pulls oils and compounds out of the bark. You get a mildly sweet, aromatic drink with almost no calories and no added sugar.

Many Indian families already cook with dalchini in chai, curries and biryani. Cinnamon water is the same bark, in plain hot water, with nothing added to it.

The interest comes from research on blood sugar and weight. One stick costs almost nothing, and the taste is good enough to drink every day, warm or cold.

Dal Chini Water Benefits: Honest Fayde Aur Nuksan

Dal chini water benefits are real but modest, not magic. Research shows cinnamon may lower fasting blood sugar by a small amount and supports digestion, but it does not melt fat or cure diabetes. The biggest fayda is a tasty, zero-sugar drink that nudges blood sugar in the right direction when paired with a good diet.

Let me be straight about dal chini water benefits. The internet oversells this. Dalchini ka pani helps a little. It is not a miracle. Here is the honest fayde aur nuksan.

What the NIH says: the US agency NCCIH has looked at this. Its view is blunt, and it is quoted in full below — NCCIH, Cinnamon: Usefulness and Safety.

"Research doesn't clearly support using cinnamon for any health condition. It's unclear whether cinnamon supplementation is helpful for diabetes or weight loss."
— US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, Cinnamon: Usefulness and Safety, checked 13 September 2026

So why drink it? Because the small effects are still worth having, and a warm cup of dalchini pani beats a sugary drink every morning. Treat it as a gentle helper, not a treatment. The sections below give you the actual numbers.

7 Cinnamon Water Benefits

Cinnamon water helps a little with blood sugar and digestion, and it carries compounds that calm swelling. A compound called cinnamaldehyde drives most of it. Trials used 1 to 6 grams of cinnamon a day. Results differ from person to person.

1. Blood Sugar Support
This is the strongest evidence cinnamon has, and even here the effect is small. Pooled trials show a modest drop in fasting blood glucose. Cinnamaldehyde seems to help the body use insulin. So cells take up sugar a little more easily.

Research note: A large study review found cinnamon lowered fasting blood sugar by about 0.49 mmol/L. That is roughly 8.8 mg/dL. It is a real change, but small, and not a substitute for medicine — PubMed/NCBI, 2011.

HbA1c data: fasting glucose is the one marker that moved. HbA1c did not.

"No statistically significant difference in glycosylated haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), serum insulin or postprandial glucose was found between cinnamon and control groups… There is insufficient evidence to support the use of cinnamon for type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus."
Leach MJ, Kumar S, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2012, 10 trials, 577 people

An earlier version of this page put a 2022 review here and linked the wrong record.

2. Weight Management (Modest)
Dalchini water may help in two small ways. It slows how fast your stomach empties, so you feel full for longer. It may also nudge up the heat your body makes. Be honest here. The effect is tiny. It shows up only next to a good diet and exercise. No health agency calls cinnamon a proven weight-loss aid.

3. PCOS Support
Women with PCOS often carry insulin resistance. In one 8 week trial, 83 women took cinnamon, ginger, metformin or a placebo. The dose was 500 mg, three times a day. Cinnamon and metformin both lowered insulin resistance and testosterone against the placebo group — Dastgheib et al., Frontiers in Nutrition 2022. That is 1.5 g of cinnamon in capsules a day, not a cup of dalchini water. It is early evidence, not a treatment. Ask your gynaecologist first.

4. Anti-Inflammatory Properties
Cinnamon lowers some markers of inflammation. Long-term low-grade inflammation is linked to heart disease, diabetes and joint pain. A daily cup adds a small, steady dose. It works best inside a wider healthy routine.

5. Heart Health
Some studies show cinnamon may lower total cholesterol, LDL and fats in the blood by a small amount. Pooled reviews find the same small gain. Again, modest, not dramatic.

6. Antioxidant Boost
Cinnamon is one of the most antioxidant-rich spices in the kitchen. Antioxidants fight oxidative stress, the cell damage linked to ageing and long-term disease. A daily cup is a small top-up with no sugar.

7. Menstrual Pain Relief
In a double-blind trial, women took 1,000 mg of cinnamon in capsules during the first 72 hours of their period, for two cycles. Pain fell further in the cinnamon group than in the placebo group — Jahangirifar et al., Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice 2018. Note what was tested: a 1 g capsule, not a drink. A cup of dalchini water carries far less. Do not expect the same effect from it.

Ceylon vs Cassia — Which Cinnamon Is Safe?

Ceylon cinnamon, called true cinnamon, is the safer choice for daily dalchini water because it has only trace coumarin. Cassia is the common dark variety sold in most Indian stores. Cassia powder can hold 2,300 to 4,400 mg of coumarin per kg, though a cassia stick holds far less. Large daily doses may strain the liver. For everyday drinking choose Ceylon, or use a stick rather than powder.

There are two main kinds: Ceylon and cassia. The difference matters if you drink dal chini water daily. Ceylon, also called true or Sri Lankan cinnamon, is the safer one. Cassia holds much more coumarin, and coumarin can harm the liver in excess.

Coumarin levels, and why sticks matter: the 2,100 to 4,400 mg/kg figure you see everywhere comes from a German lab test of cinnamon powder sold in capsules for diabetics, not from cinnamon sticks. In the same German report, whole sticks measured far lower: Ceylon stick under 15 mg/kg, and three cassia sticks at 90, 290 and 530 mg/kg. Ground cassia powder ran 2,300 to 3,300 mg/kg. So a stick steeped in water is a much smaller coumarin load than a spoon of powder — BfR Health Assessment 043/2006 (PDF).

Feature Ceylon (True Cinnamon) Cassia (Common Cinnamon)
Coumarin in the stick Under 15 mg/kg 90 to 530 mg/kg (powder is far higher, 2,300 to 4,400)
Taste Mild, slightly sweet Strong, spicy
Stick appearance Multiple thin layers, crumbly Single thick layer, hard to break
Colour Tan, light brown Dark reddish-brown
Price in India Rs 400–800 per 100g Rs 50–150 per 100g
Safe for daily use? Yes Limit to about 1 tsp (2g) daily

How to tell them apart: most cinnamon in Indian shops is cassia. A thick, hard stick of one rolled layer is cassia. A Ceylon stick is thin and crumbly, made of many thin layers. If the label does not say Ceylon, assume cassia.

My advice: if you drink dalchini water every day, buy Ceylon. It costs more, but a small pack lasts weeks. Spice shops and online grocers stock it.

Methi Aur Dalchini Water Benefits: Should You Mix Them?

Yes, you can soak methi seeds and a cinnamon stick in the same water, and of the two, methi has the stronger evidence for blood sugar. Pooling 19 trials in people with type 2 diabetes, fenugreek lowered fasting plasma glucose by about 20 mg/dL and HbA1c by 0.54 percent. Cinnamon lowered fasting glucose by about 8.8 mg/dL and did not move HbA1c at all. Neither one replaces your medicine.

Indians search for this pair more than almost any other. Here is the honest comparison.

What was measured Methi (fenugreek) Dalchini (cinnamon)
Fasting blood sugar Down about 20 mg/dL Down about 8.8 mg/dL
HbA1c Down 0.54 percent No significant change
Evidence base 19 trials in type 2 diabetes 8 trials for glucose, 10 for HbA1c
What was actually taken Seed powder in supplement doses, grams a day Powder or extract, 1 to 6 g a day

Read that table carefully. Both sets of trials used measured doses in powder or capsule form. A glass of soaked-seed water is weaker than that. So take the direction from the research, not the number.

How to make methi dalchini water: soak one teaspoon of methi seeds and one cinnamon stick in a glass of water overnight. Strain it in the morning and drink it. If you prefer it warm, simmer both in two cups of water for 10 minutes instead. Methi water tastes bitter, and the cinnamon takes the edge off it. That is the real reason the two get paired.

Dalchini and lemon for weight loss: a squeeze of lemon adds vitamin C and makes the drink easier to finish. It does not add a fat-burning effect. No trial has tested the pair. If the lemon gets you to drink it daily instead of a sugary drink, that is the whole benefit, and it is a real one.

One caution: if you take diabetes medicine, methi and cinnamon together can push your blood sugar lower than you expect. Check your readings and tell your doctor before you start.

How to Make Cinnamon Water at Home

To make cinnamon water, boil two cups of water, add one cinnamon stick, simmer for 10 minutes, then steep for 5 more. Strain and drink warm or cold. For a portable version, drop a cinnamon stick into an infuser bottle strainer. Pour hot water, close the lid, and steep for 10 to 15 minutes.

It takes about 15 minutes and two things: a cinnamon stick and hot water. Use a pan, or an infuser bottle. The bottle is easier, and you can carry it to work.

Stovetop method:

  1. Boil 2 cups of water in a saucepan.
  2. Add 1 cinnamon stick (about 3 inches long).
  3. Simmer on a low flame for 10 minutes.
  4. Steep off the heat for 5 more minutes.
  5. Strain into a cup. Add a squeeze of lemon or a teaspoon of honey if you like.

Infuser bottle method (faster, portable):

  1. Take the InstaCuppa Glass Tea Infuser Bottle (450 ML).
  2. Insert the stainless steel infuser into the bottle.
  3. Drop 1 cinnamon stick into the infuser, so it sits inside the mesh strainer.
  4. Pour hot water (not boiling — wait 30 seconds after the kettle clicks off).
  5. Close the bamboo lid and let it steep for 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. Sip through the day. The top strainer filters any small particles.

Two ways to brew: for seeds, spices or a cinnamon stick, drop in the full steel infuser. The mesh holds everything while the water draws out the flavour. For fruit slices, take the infuser out, add the fruit to the water, and put back only the top strainer.

Add a slice of ginger or a few drops of lemon for flavour. Cinnamon goes well with both.

Side Effects and Precautions

Cinnamon water is safe for most adults in normal amounts of 1 to 2 sticks a day. Most risks come from cassia and large doses. Coumarin can strain the liver. Cinnamon can lower blood sugar too far if you take diabetes medicine. And high doses are not advised in pregnancy. When in doubt, ask your doctor.

Cinnamon water is safe for most adults in normal food amounts, one or two sticks a day. Some people still need care. These risks apply mainly to cassia, and mainly to large doses.

1. Coumarin and liver risk: cassia cinnamon carries coumarin. The tolerable daily intake is 0.1 mg per kg of body weight, set by EFSA and confirmed by the German BfR. For a 60 kg adult that is 6 mg a day, which is about 2 g of cassia powder. A cassia stick at 530 mg/kg would have to weigh over 11 g to reach the same figure, and a typical 3-inch stick weighs a couple of grams. Powder is the risk here, not the stick.

2. Blood sugar interaction: if you take diabetes medicine, cinnamon may push your sugar lower still. That can cause a hypo. Check your levels and tell your doctor before you start.

3. Blood thinner interaction: coumarin is a close cousin of warfarin, a blood thinner. If you take blood thinners, keep off large amounts of cassia.

4. Pregnancy caution: High doses of cinnamon may stimulate the uterus. Small amounts in food are fine. But avoid many cups of strong cinnamon water in pregnancy without your doctor's advice.

Health Disclaimer: This article is for general information only and is not medical advice. Cinnamon water is not a cure for diabetes, PCOS, or any condition. Ask your doctor before changing your diet. This matters most if you are pregnant, have a health condition, or take medicine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are dal chini water benefits (dalchini ka pani ke fayde)?

Dal chini water benefits include modest blood sugar support, easier digestion, antioxidants, and a tasty zero-sugar drink. Research shows the effects are small, not magic. It works best as a daily habit alongside a balanced diet, not as a treatment for diabetes or weight loss.

Can I drink cinnamon water every day?

Yes, most adults can drink cinnamon water daily. Use Ceylon cinnamon to avoid excess coumarin. Stick to 1 to 2 sticks per day. If you take diabetes medication or blood thinners, check with your doctor first.

Is cinnamon water good for weight loss?

Cinnamon water may give a small nudge by slowing digestion, but health authorities have not found it to be a proven weight-loss aid. The effect is modest. It works only alongside a balanced diet and regular exercise, never as a standalone solution.

When is the best time to drink cinnamon water?

Morning on an empty stomach or 30 minutes before meals may help with blood sugar control. There is no single best time. Consistency matters more than timing.

Does cinnamon water help with PCOS?

Research suggests cinnamon may help your body use insulin better. That matters in PCOS. Some studies also show more regular periods. It is not a treatment for PCOS but may help as part of a broader plan approved by your gynaecologist.

Can I use cinnamon powder instead of sticks?

You can, but sticks steep cleaner. Powder tends to leave sediment in the water. If you use powder, add half a teaspoon to warm water and stir. With the Glass Tea Infuser Bottle, the mesh strainer catches most of the residue.

What is the difference between Ceylon and cassia cinnamon?

Ceylon is lighter, milder, and low in coumarin, so it is safe for daily use. Cassia is darker, stronger, and high in coumarin that may harm the liver in excess. Most Indian grocery stores sell cassia.

Can cinnamon water break my intermittent fast?

Plain cinnamon water has nearly zero calories and does not spike insulin. Most fasting experts agree it will not break your fast. Avoid adding honey or sugar during the fasting window.
