Induction stove power consumption: the short answer

Induction stove power consumption is easy to work out. Most Indian induction stoves use 1,200 to 2,100 watts. That is 1.2 to 2.1 units an hour at full power. Used one to two hours a day, the cost is about Rs 250 to 750 a month.

I cook on one at home in Tirupati. The number on the dial is the key. Set it lower, and you pay less. Let me show the simple maths.

Quick Answers

Q: How many watts does it use?
About 1,200 to 2,100 watts for most Indian models.

Q: How many units per hour?
About 1.2 to 2.1 units an hour at full power.

Q: What does it cost a month?
Roughly Rs 250 to 750 for one to two hours a day.

How many watts does an induction stove use?

Most induction stoves in India use 1,200 to 2,100 watts. Smaller models start near 800 watts. Bigger ones reach 3,000 watts. The brand calls this the power rating. You will see it on the box and the dial.

Watts simply mean how fast it pulls power. More watts means faster cooking. It also means a higher bill if you run it at full heat.

India range: household induction cooktops sold in India fall in the 800 to 3,000 watt band, with 1,800 to 2,100 watts seen as the best fit for Indian cooking — Prabhat Khabar, 2024.

How many units per hour does it use?

An induction stove uses watts divided by 1,000 units each hour. So a 2,000 watt stove uses 2 units an hour. A 1,200 watt stove uses 1.2 units an hour. One unit is one kilowatt-hour. That is the number your meter counts.

But you rarely cook at full power. You boil, then simmer. So real use is often lower than the top number.

Simple rule: a 2,000 watt induction stove uses 2.0 units per hour at full power, while a 1,200 watt model uses 1.2 units per hour — Winner Winner Chicken Dinner, 2024.

What does it cost to run per month in India?

The monthly cost depends on watts, hours, and your tariff. The formula is simple. Units equal watts divided by 1,000, times hours a day, times 30. Then multiply by your rate. Most homes pay about Rs 6 to 8 a unit.

Here is the sum for one hour of daily use:

  • 1,200 watt stove: 1.2 units a day. That is 36 units a month. At Rs 7, about Rs 252.
  • 2,100 watt stove: 2.1 units a day. That is 63 units a month. At Rs 7, about Rs 441.

Use it two hours a day, and you double those figures. So plan for Rs 250 to 750 a month for most homes.

Worked example: at about Rs 6 a unit, a 1,200 watt cooktop costs around Rs 216 a month at one hour a day, and a 2,100 watt model about Rs 378 — Winner Winner Chicken Dinner, 2024.

Is an induction stove efficient to use?

Yes. Induction is the most efficient way to cook. It heats the pan directly. Little heat is lost to the air. A gas flame wastes much more heat around the pot. So induction often uses less energy for the same dish.

This is why your kitchen stays cooler too. The heat goes into the food, not the room.

Efficiency gap: induction cooktops run at about 85 to 90 percent efficiency, against 40 to 45 percent for gas and roughly 65 percent for an electric coil — Atomberg, 2024.

For a full money comparison with gas, see our guide on induction vs gas stove cost in India.

How can you cut your induction stove bill?

You can lower the cost with small habits. Cook at a medium setting, not full power. Use a flat, wide pan that fits the coil. Keep a lid on while boiling. Switch off a minute early and let the pan finish.

  1. Lower the power dial — simmer at 800 to 1,200 watts, not the top setting.
  2. Use a matching pan — a flat base that covers the coil heats faster.
  3. Keep the lid on — trapped heat boils water sooner and saves units.
  4. Switch off early — the hot pan finishes the last minute for free.
  5. Soak hard items first — soaked dal and rice cook quicker.

These habits can trim a fair slice off your monthly figure. For more rupee maths on home gadgets, read our air fryer electricity cost breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much power does an induction stove use in India?

Most induction stoves in India use 1,200 to 2,100 watts. That works out to 1.2 to 2.1 units an hour at full power. Smaller models use less. You can lower the dial to cut the draw.

How many units does an induction cooktop use per hour?

An induction cooktop uses its watts divided by 1,000 in units each hour. A 2,000 watt stove uses 2 units an hour at full power. A 1,200 watt stove uses 1.2 units. Real use is often lower because you simmer.

What is the monthly running cost of an induction stove?

For one hour a day, a 1,200 watt stove costs about Rs 252 a month at Rs 7 a unit. A 2,100 watt stove costs about Rs 441. Two hours a day doubles these figures.

Is an induction stove cheaper than a gas stove?

On energy, induction is very efficient at 85 to 90 percent. Gas wastes more heat at 40 to 45 percent. But gas cylinder prices and power tariffs change the final cost. See our induction vs gas guide for the full sum.

Does an induction stove raise my electricity bill a lot?

Not by much for normal use. One to two hours a day adds about Rs 250 to 750 a month. Cooking at lower power and using a good pan keeps it on the low side.

What wattage induction stove is best for an Indian home?

A 1,800 to 2,100 watt model suits most Indian kitchens. It is fast enough for daily dal, rice, and curries. You can still set it low to save power when you simmer.
