How Much Electricity Does an Air Fryer Use?

An air fryer uses about 0.4 to 0.6 units of electricity per 20-minute cook. Most Indian models are rated 1200 to 1800 watts, so they draw 1.2 to 1.8 units per hour at full power. With one cook a day that is 12 to 18 units a month, or roughly Rs 72 to Rs 144 on your bill at Rs 6 to 8 per unit.

A typical air fryer uses 1200-1800 watts. But it runs for just 15-25 minutes per use, not all day. So daily use is only 0.3-0.75 units (kWh). At Indian rates, that is about Rs 2-6 per day. Many people also type this as "airfryer electricity consumption" as one word. It means the same thing.

Many people see "1500W" on the air fryer label and worry it will spike their electricity bill. But wattage alone does not tell the full story. What matters is wattage multiplied by usage time. A 1500W air fryer running for 20 minutes uses 0.5 units. A 100W ceiling fan running all day (12 hours) uses 1.2 units. The fan costs more per day than the air fryer.

How it heats: An air fryer is a small convection oven — a heating coil with a fan around it. It holds the set temperature by switching the coil on and off, so it rarely draws its full rated wattage for the whole cook. That is why the rated-wattage tables below are a ceiling, not a reading.

Measured, not modelled: UK consumer lab Which? put both machines on a meter and cooked the same food. Two things follow for an Indian kitchen. First, a real cook lands at 0.29 to 0.54 units, which is inside the 0.4-0.6 range this page models, so the maths below is not optimistic. Second, at Rs 7 a unit those same cooks cost about Rs 2 and Rs 3.80.

The same test names the catch: the savings soon drop off if you have to cook in batches, so an oven may still be the most economical choice when cooking for a crowd. An air fryer basket is small. Cook for six and you run it three times, and three runs of a 1500W fryer beat one run of the oven.

Air Fryer Power Consumption and Current Draw: Watts, Amps and Units per Hour

Air fryer power consumption is 1200 to 1800 watts, printed on the label as "W". Watts tell you how fast the fryer uses electricity. At full power for one hour, a 1200W model uses 1.2 units, a 1500W model 1.5 units, and an 1800W model 1.8 units. Real cooks are shorter, and the coil switches off and on to hold the set heat, so actual use is lower.

Current draw in amps is watts divided by volts, and Indian mains is 230 volts. A 1200W air fryer pulls about 5.2 amps, a 1400W model 6.1 amps, a 1500W model 6.5 amps, and an 1800W model 7.8 amps.

India's socket standard, IS 1293, covers plugs and sockets rated up to 16 amperes at 230, 240 and 250 volts, and the low household rating in it is 6 A, not 5 A. A 6 A socket at 230 V carries 1,380 watts. So a 1200W air fryer is inside a 6 A socket's rating; a 1500W or 1800W one is not, and belongs on the 16 A socket.

How to Calculate Air Fryer Electricity Cost (Step by Step)

You can work out your air fryer's exact cost from three numbers. First, the wattage (printed on the label). Second, the daily usage time in hours. Third, your tariff per unit. The formula is simple: cost = wattage x hours x tariff / 1000.

1. Find the wattage - check the label on the bottom of your air fryer or the user manual. Common values: 1200W, 1400W, 1500W, 1800W
2. Convert usage time to hours - 15 minutes = 0.25 hours. 20 minutes = 0.33 hours. 30 minutes = 0.50 hours
3. Multiply wattage by hours - example: 1500W x 0.33 hours = 495 watt-hours
4. Divide by 1000 to get units - 495 / 1000 = 0.495 units per day
5. Multiply by your tariff - 0.495 x Rs 7 per unit = Rs 3.47 per day
6. Multiply by 30 for monthly cost - Rs 3.47 x 30 = Rs 104 per month

Note: Air fryers do not run at full wattage the whole time. Once they hit the set temperature, the heating coil cycles on and off. So real consumption stays below the rated wattage. Your true monthly cost is usually lower than the rated-wattage table above.

An air fryer uses less total electricity per day than most kitchen appliances because of its short usage time. A refrigerator runs 24 hours and uses 1-2 units daily. A microwave uses 800-1200W but runs for 5-10 minutes. An OTG oven uses 1500-2500W and runs for 30-60 minutes per baking session.

Monthly cost summary (at Rs 7 per unit, from the table above): air fryer Rs 84-126. Microwave Rs 27-42. OTG oven Rs 210-357. Induction cooktop Rs 126-210. Mixer grinder Rs 8-13. An OTG costs about two and a half times an air fryer for the same kind of job.

Lab-tested: Which? measured a jacket potato at 0.392 kWh in an air fryer against 1.084 kWh in a built-in oven, and a cake at 0.223 kWh against 0.71 kWh — roughly a third of the oven's electricity in both cases (Which?). The reason is size, not cleverness: the fryer heats a few litres of air, the oven heats sixty.

Five practical tips can meaningfully cut your air fryer electricity consumption. Preheat less, cook in batches, use a lower temperature, match wattage to your needs, and unplug when idle. Each one trims the bill.

• Preheat for only 3 minutes - longer preheating wastes electricity. 3 minutes is enough for most cooking
• Cook back-to-back batches - the air fryer is already hot from the previous batch. The second batch needs less energy to reach temperature
• Use 170-180 degrees Celsius instead of 200 - lower temperature uses less energy per minute and often gives equally good results
• Match wattage to your needs - if you cook for 1-2 people, a 1200W model is enough. Do not buy 1800W and run it at half capacity
• Unplug when not in use - some air fryers draw 1-3 watts in standby mode. Over a month, this adds up
