Honey for Skin: 8 Ways to Use It on Your Face and Body

Honey for skin care is simple. Your kitchen already has it, and you have been using it only in your chai.

Honey is a gentle, low-cost thing to put on your skin. It helps skin hold water, and it slows germs in lab tests. Medical honey helps burns heal. But the proof that kitchen honey clears pimples or fades dark spots is weak. This guide tells you what works, what does not, and how to use honey safely.

Here are 8 simple ways to use honey for your skin. All of them use ingredients you already have at home.

How to Use Honey for Pimples and Dark Spots

To use honey for pimples and dark spots, wash your face, spread a thin layer of honey on damp skin, leave it for 15 to 20 minutes, and rinse with warm water. Do it 2 to 3 times a week. Be clear about results. Honey slows acne germs in a lab dish. But in a 12-week trial of 136 people, honey did not clear acne better than soap alone. We found no study showing honey fades dark spots.

That trial was run in New Zealand in 2016 and published in BMJ Open. People used a medical-grade kanuka honey cream twice a day, on top of an antibacterial soap. After 12 weeks, 4 of 53 people in the honey group (7.6%) had clearly better acne, against 1 of 53 (1.9%) with soap only. That gap was too small to rule out chance, and the authors said they found no evidence that honey helped.

How many times to apply honey on your face? 2 to 3 times a week is a common home routine. No study sets a number. Stop if your skin turns red, itchy or stings.

Can you apply honey on your face every day? You can, if your skin stays calm. But 2 to 3 times a week is enough for most people. No study has tested daily use, so watch for redness, itching or new bumps, and cut back if you see them.

Can you apply honey directly on your face, with only honey and nothing mixed in? Yes. Plain honey on its own can go straight on clean skin as a short mask, if a patch test is fine first. Keep it off open cuts and broken pimples. Wound care uses sterile, medical-grade honey, not kitchen honey.

Can you use Dabur honey or any shop honey on your face? Yes, for a short mask, if the jar is pure honey and your patch test is fine. Dabur, Patanjali and other shop brands are sold as food honey. We found no study that tests any Indian honey brand on skin, so the brand matters less than a clean spoon and a sealed jar. Read the label: the ingredient list should say only honey.

For dark spots, the one step with strong proof is sunscreen every day. Sun makes dark spots darker. If you have painful, deep or scarring acne, see a skin doctor (dermatologist). Home masks are not a treatment for it.

Does Honey Cause Acne or Pimples?

Honey is not known to cause acne in most people. In the one acne trial we found, skin side effects were about as common with a honey cream plus soap (23 events) as with soap alone (24 events). Those side effects were dry or oily skin, stinging, an itchy rash (contact dermatitis) and worse acne.

Some skin still reacts. In that trial, 2 of 68 people using honey (2.9%) left because their acne got worse. Nobody in the soap-only group left for that reason. We also found no published comedogenic (pore-clogging) rating for honey, so treat any number you see online with care. Patch test first, rinse the mask off fully, and stop if new bumps or redness appear.

What Honey Can and Cannot Do for Skin: The Evidence

Honey claims range from well tested to not tested at all. This table shows what we found for each one, checked again on 31 October 2026.

शहद फेस पर कैसे लगाएं? Shahad Face Par Kaise Lagaye? (How to Apply Honey on Face, in Hindi)

Honey me kya milakar lagaye face par? Dahi, oats powder ya chutki bhar haldi. Nimbu wala mask sirf raat ko lagayein, aur uske baad dhoop mein na jaayein.

Shahad face par kaise lagaye? Chehra dho kar halka geela rakhein. Ek chammach shahad ki patli parat lagayein. 15 se 20 minute baad gungune paani se dho lein. Hafte mein 2 se 3 baar kaafi hai. Pehle baanh par thoda shahad laga kar patch test karein.

Kya shahad se pimple hote hain? Zyaadatar logon mein nahin. Lekin kuch logon ki skin par lali, khujli ya naye daane ho sakte hain. Isliye patch test zaroor karein.

In English: wash your face and keep it damp. Spread a thin layer of honey, rinse after 15 to 20 minutes, and use it 2 to 3 times a week. Patch test on your inner arm first. Good things to mix with honey are curd (dahi), ground oats, or a pinch of turmeric. After a lemon mask, stay out of the sun. There is no firm proof that honey clears pimples or dark spots, so see a skin doctor for bad acne. Honey is not known to cause pimples in most people, but some skin reacts, so patch test first.

Gold Nugget: Honey Is a Natural Humectant — It Pulls Moisture into Your Skin

Honey is a humectant. A humectant draws water and helps the top layer of skin hold on to it. That is why skin feels soft after a honey mask, and why skin creams add honey. A spoon of honey from your kitchen is a cheap way to try this. Honey also slows germs in lab tests, but that has not been shown to clear acne on real faces.

Why Honey Is Good for Skin

Honey has four properties that people use on skin. Some are well tested. Others are only tested in labs.

1. It Pulls Moisture into the Skin

Honey attracts water. When you apply honey to your face, it helps the outer layer of skin hold moisture. The result is softer skin. This is especially nice for dry or patchy skin.

2. It Slows Skin Bacteria (in the Lab)

Honey slows the germ linked to acne, Propionibacterium acnes (now called Cutibacterium acnes), in a lab dish. In one 2017 lab study, honey stopped it from growing at 50% strength. Honey works on germs partly through an enzyme that slowly makes hydrogen peroxide, a mild germ killer. Manuka honey also has a compound called methylglyoxal. This lab effect is one reason medical honey is used on wounds. It has not been shown to clear acne on the face.

3. It Reduces Swelling and Redness

Honey has natural plant compounds, and reviews describe it as soothing in skin products. But we found no good human study showing honey fixes acne scars or sun damage. For sun damage, sunscreen is the proven step.

4. It Gently Exfoliates

Raw honey has natural enzymes, and people often say they help lift dead skin. We found no study that proves this on the face. The real scrubbing in a honey scrub comes from what you mix in, like oats or sugar. Rub gently, because hard scrubbing irritates skin.

8 Ways to Use Honey for Skin

1. Plain Honey Face Mask (Moisturizing)

Best for: Dry skin, dull skin, sensitive skin

Ingredients: 1 tbsp raw honey

Steps:

  1. Wash your face with warm water. Pat dry. Your skin should be slightly damp.
  2. Apply 1 tbsp raw honey to your face with clean fingers. Spread evenly.
  3. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Rinse with warm water. Pat dry with a soft cloth.

Use 2 to 3 times per week. Many people find their skin feels softer right after the rinse.

2. Honey and Turmeric Mask (Acne-Prone Skin)

Best for: A soothing mask for acne-prone skin. It is a home habit, not a proven acne or dark spot treatment.

Ingredients: 1 tbsp honey, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder

Steps:

  1. Mix honey and turmeric into a paste.
  2. Apply to the face. Avoid the area around the eyes.
  3. Leave for 15 minutes.
  4. Rinse with warm water.

Warning: Turmeric stains. Use an old cloth. Rinse very well. If your skin is very fair, test on a small patch first — turmeric can leave a yellow tint for 1 to 2 hours.

3. Honey and Lemon Mask (Use With Care)

Best for: A popular home mask for dull skin. We found no proof that it fades dark spots, and lemon can irritate skin. If your skin is sensitive, choose the curd mask instead.

Ingredients: 1 tbsp honey, 1 tsp fresh lemon juice

Steps:

  1. Mix honey and lemon juice well.
  2. Apply to clean skin.
  3. Leave for 10 to 15 minutes. Do not leave longer — lemon can irritate sensitive skin.
  4. Rinse with cool water.

Warning: Do not use this mask before going out in the sun. Citrus juice, like lime, has natural chemicals called furanocoumarins. With sunlight, they can cause a burn-like rash that leaves dark marks (phytophotodermatitis, says DermNet). That is the opposite of what you want for dark spots. Use this mask only at night, rinse very well, and stop if it stings.

4. Honey and Curd Mask (Soothing and Softening)

Best for: Oily skin, large pores, rough texture

Ingredients: 1 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp plain curd (dahi)

Steps:

  1. Mix honey and curd into a smooth paste.
  2. Apply to clean face.
  3. Leave for 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Rinse with cool water.

Curd has lactic acid, a mild acid that many skin products also use. Honey adds moisture. Many people find this mask leaves skin smooth and soft.

5. Honey and Oat Scrub (Exfoliating)

Best for: Rough skin, blackheads, clogged pores

Ingredients: 1 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp fine oat powder (grind oats in a blender)

Steps:

  1. Mix honey and oat powder into a thick paste.
  2. Apply to damp face. Massage in gentle circles for 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. Leave for 5 minutes.
  4. Rinse with warm water.

Use once a week. More often can irritate the skin. It is a gentle home scrub for most skin types. Skip it on active, broken pimples.

6. Honey Lip Balm (Chapped Lips)

Best for: Dry, chapped lips in winter

Ingredients: A tiny amount of raw honey (size of a grain of rice)

Steps:

  1. Apply a tiny bit of honey to your lips.
  2. Leave for 10 to 15 minutes or overnight.
  3. Rinse or lick off gently.

Honey on lips is an old home remedy for chapped lips. Honey helps hold moisture, and lip balms often include it. Use only a thin layer overnight.

7. Honey Body Scrub (Full Body Softening)

Best for: Rough elbows, knees, dry body skin

Ingredients: 2 tbsp honey, 2 tbsp sugar (for the scrubbing texture)

Steps:

  1. Mix honey and sugar into a paste.
  2. Apply to elbows, knees, and any dry patches.
  3. Massage in circles for 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Leave for 5 minutes.
  5. Rinse in the shower.

The sugar physically removes dead skin. The honey moisturizes at the same time. Use once a week for smooth, soft skin on elbows and knees.

8. Honey for Pimples (Spot Treatment)

Best for: A closed pimple you want to leave alone. Not for cuts or broken skin.

Ingredients: A tiny bit of raw honey

Steps:

  1. Dab a tiny amount of honey directly on the pimple. Do not use kitchen honey on a cut or an open, popped pimple.
  2. Cover with a small piece of gauze or bandage if needed.
  3. Leave overnight. Rinse in the morning.

A honey spot stops you picking the pimple, which helps. But the proof that honey itself clears pimples is weak: it slows acne germs in a lab dish, not on faces in a trial. For cuts, doctors use medical-grade honey. It is made germ-free with gamma rays and tested for strength. Kitchen honey is not sterile, so clean a small cut with water and see a doctor if it gets red, hot or swollen.

Which Honey Should You Use on Skin?

For a face mask, any pure honey from a clean, sealed jar will do. Raw honey is a good choice if you have it.

Some shop honey is heated and filtered. Part of honey's germ-fighting power comes from an enzyme that makes hydrogen peroxide, and people pick raw honey to keep it. But we found no study that compares raw and processed honey as a face mask.

Raw honey is cloudy and thick. Sometimes it crystallizes (becomes granular). That is fine — crystallized honey still works perfectly on skin. Warm it gently (not in a microwave) until it softens.

You do not need expensive Manuka honey for basic skin care. Any pure local honey from India will work for a mask. Medical-grade honey is different. It is sterile and sold for wounds, so use that, not a food jar, on broken skin. Read more in Raw Honey Benefits.

Honey vs Store-Bought Skin Care Products

Indian stores sell hundreds of face wash, moisturizer, and face mask products. Many of them cost a few hundred rupees a bottle. Are they better than honey?

For some skin needs, yes. A good sunscreen is essential and honey does not replace it. Prescription creams for severe acne need a doctor.

For simple moisturising, honey is a cheap thing to try. For acne and dark spots, products with tested ingredients, used with a doctor's advice, have much more proof than honey.

The big difference: honey has one ingredient. No added perfume. No preservatives. Some people react to the perfume or preservatives in skin products. But honey is not free of risk either. A few people get a rash from honey or other bee products, so patch test it the same way.

If you have sensitive skin that reacts badly to most products, plain honey is a gentle thing to test. Change one thing at a time, so you know what your skin reacts to.

People have used honey on skin since the earliest civilizations, a 2013 review says. It is still used in lip balms, creams and wound dressings today. Old use is a good reason to try honey, but it is not proof that every claim is true. For the wider picture, read Honey Benefits: What Science Actually Proves.

Who Should Be Careful

  • Bee allergy: If you are allergic to bee stings, pollen, propolis or other bee products, do not apply honey to your skin without asking a doctor first.
  • Very sensitive skin: Do a patch test on the inner arm before any face mask. A 30-minute test only catches fast reactions. Allergy rashes usually take 2 to 4 days to show, says DermNet. For a fuller test, put a little honey on a 5 cm patch of your forearm twice a day for 5 days. If there is no redness or itching, you can try it on the face.
  • Open wounds: Do not put kitchen honey on open cuts. Wound care uses sterile, medical-grade honey. For deep wounds or burns, see a doctor.

Common Questions

Can I apply honey on face every day?

Yes, you can, if your skin stays calm. But most people do well with a plain honey mask 2 to 3 times a week. No study sets a limit, so watch your skin. Keep each mask to about 20 minutes, and stop if your skin turns red, itchy or stings.

Does honey remove dark spots?

We found no human study showing that honey removes dark spots. Honey can make skin feel softer, but that is not the same as fading a spot. Do not rely on the lemon mask, since citrus and sun can cause new dark marks. Daily sunscreen is the step with real proof, and a skin doctor can suggest tested creams.

Does honey cause acne or pimples?

Honey is not known to cause acne in most people. In a 12-week trial of 136 people, skin side effects were about as common with honey (23) as with soap alone (24), but 2 of 68 honey users quit because their acne got worse. Honey also did not clear acne better than soap. Patch test first, and stop if new bumps appear.

How many times should I apply honey on my face?

Two to three times a week is a common home routine for a plain honey mask. No study sets a number. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, rinse well, and stop if your skin turns red or itchy.

Can I apply only honey directly on my face?

Yes. You can spread plain honey on its own straight on clean, damp skin as a short mask, if a patch test is fine first. Keep kitchen honey off open cuts and popped pimples, because it is not sterile.

Can I use Dabur honey on my face?

Yes, for a short face mask, if it is pure honey from a sealed jar and your patch test is fine. We found no study that tests Dabur or any other Indian honey brand on skin, so a clean jar matters more than the brand.

Does honey remove pimples?

Not reliably. Honey slows acne germs in a lab dish, but a 12-week trial of 136 people found medical-grade honey did not clear acne better than soap alone. For painful or scarring acne, see a skin doctor.

Can I leave honey on my face overnight?

For a full-face mask, 15 to 20 minutes is enough. A tiny dab on one closed pimple overnight is a common home habit, as in recipe 8. No study shows that longer contact works better, so rinse in the morning and stop if your skin itches.

Shahad face par kaise lagaye?

Chehra dho kar shahad ki patli parat lagayein, aur 15 se 20 minute baad gungune paani se dho lein. Hafte mein 2 se 3 baar kaafi hai, aur pehle baanh par patch test karein. In English: spread a thin layer of honey on a clean face, rinse after 15 to 20 minutes, and use it 2 to 3 times a week.
