What Is an Egg Boiler?

An egg boiler is a small electric appliance that cooks eggs using steam. You add water to the base, place eggs in the tray, close the lid, and press a button. The machine heats the water. Steam rises and cooks the eggs. When the water is gone, the heater stops on its own. No watching, no timer, no guessing. Some models, like the KENT Instant, still need you to press the switch off after the light goes out.

This egg boiler guide is built from the makers' own product pages, the KENT Instant Egg Boiler user manual, and Amazon India listings, all checked on 26 September 2026. The biggest surprise in the KENT manual? More eggs need less water, not more. The measuring cup that comes with the machine is not decoration - it is the most important part.

Gold nugget: The measuring cup has marks for soft, medium, and hard boils. KENT says its cup also has a mark for poached eggs. Most people ignore these marks. That is why they get inconsistent results. Use the marks every single time.

Egg Boiler Chart: How Much Water for Soft, Medium and Hard Eggs?

An egg boiler water chart tells you how much water to pour for each number of eggs. In the KENT Instant Egg Boiler (product code 116020) manual, 1 hard-boiled egg needs 66 ml of water, and 4 medium eggs need 31 ml. More eggs need less water. That is the opposite of what most people guess.

How to Poach Eggs in a KENT Egg Boiler

To poach eggs in a KENT egg boiler, fill the KENT measuring cup to the poaching mark, pour that water in, put the poaching tray with the cracked eggs on top, close the lid and switch on. KENT says the steam "will gently poach the eggs to a soft, restaurant-style finish." KENT lists a poaching tray with its KENT Super and KENT Quick egg boilers.

1. Pour the water - fill the measuring cup to the poaching mark. Pour it onto the heating plate.
2. Crack the eggs - crack one egg into each cup of the poaching tray. There is no shell, so there is nothing to pierce.
3. Set the tray - place the poaching tray in the egg boiler and close the lid.
4. Switch on - the heater stops when the water is used up. Then switch off and unplug.
5. Lift with care - the KENT manual warns that the steel lid gets extremely hot. Use the handle. Slide each egg out with a spoon.

KENT does not publish a poaching time or a millilitre figure for the poaching mark. The water sets the cooking time. If the yolk comes out too firm, use a little less water next time. If the white is still runny, use a little more.

Other brands work the same way. The AGARO Grand poaches up to 4 eggs at a time. The Borosil Electric Plus also comes with a poaching tray. The KENT Instant manual says its steaming bowl can be used for a poached egg.

What Types of Egg Boilers Are Available in India?

There are two main types sold in India. Most homes need the first type. The second is for people who want more cooking options.

Most Indian homes do well with the basic type. The line between the two is blurry: even the Rs 899 KENT Quick lists a poaching tray. If your family eats a lot of eggs and you want to poach or steam food too, an 8-egg model is worth the extra money.

How Does an Egg Boiler Work?

An egg boiler works on a simple principle. Water turns to steam. Steam cooks eggs gently and evenly from all sides. When the water runs out, the heating element shuts off automatically. This is the auto-shutoff feature.

Here is the step-by-step process:

1. Pierce each egg - use the needle that comes with the machine. Pierce the wider (blunt) end. The KENT manual says this stops eggs from bursting or cracking.
2. Measure water carefully - use the measuring cup. Soft boil = less water. Hard boil = more water. More eggs = a little less water (see the chart above).
3. Pour water on the heating plate - pour directly on the plate, not in the tray.
4. Place eggs in the tray - pointed end down, wide end up.
5. Close the lid and switch on - the machine does the rest.
6. Wait for the beep or the light - when the eggs are done, move them to cold water right away. This stops cooking. The KENT manual says to switch the machine off, or the eggs keep cooking and get harder.

Power check: The KENT Super Egg Boiler is rated 400 W. Every 10 minutes of heating at 400 W uses about 0.07 unit (kWh) of electricity. At Rs 8 per unit, that is about 53 paise. This is our own arithmetic. Your tariff may differ, and the run time depends on how much water you pour.

Who Actually Needs an Egg Boiler?

You will love an egg boiler if you eat eggs three or more times a week. You will not need one if you only eat eggs on weekends. Here is a clear breakdown.

You probably do not need one if:

On 26 September 2026 that covered the KENT Quick (Rs 899 on kent.co.in), the KENT Super (Rs 1,099 on Amazon) and the AGARO Grand (Rs 1,099 on Amazon). You get auto-shutoff, a poaching tray on most models, and room for 6 to 8 eggs. Auto-shutoff is the most important safety feature. Do not buy a model without it.

Top Egg Boiler Models in India (2026)

These are three well-known egg boiler brands in India. All three were in stock on Amazon India on 26 September 2026. We did not test them. The specs come from each maker's own product page.

Best value on paper: AGARO Grand at Rs 1,099. It holds 8 eggs, against 6 in the KENT Super at the same price. AGARO lists a 2-year warranty, and KENT lists 1 year. The KENT Super is smaller, with a steel body and heating plate. We have not run head-to-head tests. On 26 September 2026 the AGARO Grand was sold out on AGARO's own site but in stock on Amazon.

Egg Boiler vs Stovetop - Which Is Better for Indian Homes?

Both methods work. The right one depends on how many eggs you cook and how much time you want to spend.

We have not measured gas use, so we cannot say which one costs less per run. The real gain is that you do not have to stand and watch the pan. For a working parent packing tiffin at 7am, that matters a lot.

Can You Use an Egg Boiler for More Than Boiling?

Yes. All four models we checked (KENT Quick, KENT Super, AGARO Grand and Borosil Electric Plus) list a poaching tray. This opens up more cooking options than most people realise.

• Poached eggs - great for egg benedict or on toast
• Steamed vegetables - AGARO and Borosil both list steaming vegetables. Cut broccoli, carrots, and potatoes small.
• Omelettes - Borosil says the steaming bowl of its Electric Plus can make omelettes. KENT says its Instant model is not made for omelettes.
• Steamed idli - only if a small idli mould fits your tray. No maker we checked lists idli.
• Momos - one or two at a time. Borosil lists steaming dumplings in its poaching tray.
• Dhokla - small portions may work in the poaching cup. No maker we checked lists it.
• Custard cups - small steamed egg custards may work the same way. No maker we checked lists them.
