Why Cucumber Water?

Cucumber water is plain water with cucumber slices soaked in it. Slice half a cucumber, drop it in cold water, and wait an hour. It has almost no calories and a mild, fresh taste. The main benefit is simple: it makes water nicer to drink, so you may drink more of it.

Cucumber water is one of the simplest infused water recipes. Slice half a cucumber and drop it in cold water. Wait an hour. The result is a fresh drink with almost no calories and a mild flavour. Cucumber itself is 93 to 95 percent water by weight. That makes it one of the most watery vegetables you can buy.

You see cucumber water at spas, gyms, and hotel desks for a reason. Many people find it tastes better than plain water. It costs very little. The slices do add a little potassium and vitamin K, but only a small part of what is in the cucumber itself. If you find it hard to drink enough water each day, cucumber slices are an easy thing to try.

Cucumber in Water Bottle: What Are the Benefits?

Putting cucumber in your water bottle gives the water a light, fresh taste with almost no calories. The real benefit is that you may drink more water through the day. The slices add only small amounts of potassium and vitamin K. Keep the bottle cold and change the slices within a day.

Here is the honest picture. Cucumber water is still mostly water. Its main job is to taste good enough that you keep sipping. That matters, because a lot of people simply forget to drink. A cold bottle with a few slices in it is easy to carry to work, college, or the gym.

Do not expect the water to carry much of the cucumber's goodness. You would get more potassium by eating the slices. So when the bottle is empty, you can eat the slices too. They are soft but safe to eat on the same day.

For a bottle, thin slices work best. Four to six rounds are enough for 500 ml. Fill the bottle with cold water and keep it in the fridge or in a cool bag. If you want to know how much water you need in a day, read our guide on daily water intake.

How Many Percent Water Is in a Cucumber?

A cucumber is about 93 to 95 percent water. India's own food table, IFCT 2017, lists the long green cucumber (food code D043) at 92.96 g of water per 100 g and the short green cucumber (D044) at 93.52 g. The USDA lists cucumber with peel at 95.2 g per 100 g.

The figure you often see online is 96 percent. It is a little high for a whole cucumber with its peel. The Indian cucumbers tested for IFCT 2017 came in a little lower, at about 93 percent. The same IFCT table lists the long green cucumber at 82 kJ of energy per 100 g, which is about 20 calories. The USDA figure is 15 calories per 100 g.

Cucumber (per 100 g) Water Energy Source
Green, long (IFCT code D043) 92.96 g 82 kJ (about 20 kcal) IFCT 2017, Table 1
Green, short (IFCT code D044) 93.52 g 73 kJ (about 17 kcal) IFCT 2017, Table 1
With peel, raw (FDC ID 168409) 95.2 g 15 kcal USDA FoodData Central

6 Cucumber Water Benefits

Cucumber water benefits come mostly from the water itself. It helps you stay hydrated. It can replace sugary drinks. It adds a little potassium. Claims about skin, silica, swelling, and hangovers are much weaker. Below, each benefit says how strong the proof is.

1. Superior Hydration
Cucumber is 93 to 95 percent water. When you soak the slices, a little of their juice and minerals moves into your drinking water. You get water that is nicer to drink and very slightly richer. If the taste helps you drink more, that is the real win. We could not find a good study that measures how much more water people drink this way.

2. Skin Health and Silica
Silica (silicon) is a mineral linked to healthy bone and connective tissue. Scientists think it may help the body make or hold collagen, but a 2007 review says its exact role is "still not clear". Cucumber is not a top source. Cereals like oats have the most. A glass of cucumber water gives very little silica. For your skin, drinking enough water matters more than the cucumber.

Silica fact: A 2007 review in the Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging (Jugdaohsingh) lists vegetables at about 1.79 mg of silicon per 100 g on average. It names green beans, spinach, and coriander as the high ones. It does not list cucumber as a rich source.

3. Weight Loss — Replaces Sugary Drinks
The biggest weight loss benefit of cucumber water is what it replaces. A 300 ml can of Coca-Cola sold in India has about 132 calories (its label says 44 calories per 100 ml). Sweet packaged juices are often in the same range, so check the label. Cucumber water has only a few calories. Swap one can of cola a day and you cut about 924 calories a week. Over months, that can help with slow weight loss.

4. Blood Pressure Support (Potassium)
Cucumbers contain potassium, about 147 mg per 100 g (USDA). Potassium helps balance sodium in your body. Too much sodium raises blood pressure. Cucumber water alone will not treat high blood pressure, and the water holds much less potassium than the slices. This still matters, because most people eat too much salt. The WHO says adults around the world ate about 11 g of salt a day in 2021. That is more than double its limit of under 5 g.

5. Anti-Inflammatory Properties
Cucumbers contain plant compounds such as flavonoids and cucurbitacins. Lab studies suggest some of them act as antioxidants. But a 2013 review of cucumber research says very few studies have tested its health effects in people. Cucumber water has only traces of these compounds. Enjoy it as a drink, not as a treatment.

6. Hangover Helper
Alcohol makes you pass more urine, so you can wake up short of water. Cucumber water rehydrates you just like plain water does. The slices add only tiny amounts of potassium and almost no B vitamins. No study shows that cucumber water stops a hangover. A glass of water before bed and another in the morning is a sensible habit, with or without the cucumber.

How to Make Cucumber Water

Making cucumber water takes 5 minutes of prep and 1 to 2 hours of infusing time. The longer you let it sit, the stronger the flavour. Cold water works best — refrigeration slows bacterial growth and keeps the cucumber crisp.

  1. Wash half a cucumber thoroughly. You can peel it or leave the skin on — skin adds nutrients but may taste slightly bitter.
  2. Slice the cucumber into thin rounds (about 3mm thick). Thinner slices release flavour faster.
  3. Add the slices to your water bottle or pitcher.
  4. Fill with cold water.
  5. Refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours. Minimum 30 minutes if you are in a hurry.
  6. Sip through the day. Refill with water once — the slices still have flavour for a second fill.

Using the Glass Tea Infuser Bottle: The InstaCuppa Glass Tea Infuser Bottle (450 ML) works for cucumber water too. Put the cucumber slices in the stainless steel infuser basket. Fill the bottle with cold water. The basket keeps the slices and seeds out of your mouth while the flavour moves into the water.

Stock note (26 September 2026): the Glass Tea Infuser Bottle is sold out on our store right now. Its listed price is Rs 1,599. The Tritan Fruit Infuser Water Bottle (1 Litre) is in stock at Rs 999.

For larger batches, use the InstaCuppa Tritan Fruit Infuser Water Bottle (1 Litre). The wide infuser chamber holds generous amounts of cucumber, lemon, and mint.

One bottle, many drinks: The InstaCuppa Glass Tea Infuser Bottle uses the same infuser basket for everything. Put tea leaves, spices, fruit, mint, or cucumber slices in the basket. The steel strainer holds them back when you sip. The Tritan bottle has a full-length infuser rod and a filter screen in its flip-top lid.

Best Add-Ins

Cucumber water is a perfect base for combinations. Here are four that work well together. All can be prepared in either the Glass Tea Infuser Bottle or Tritan Fruit Infuser Bottle.

Combination Flavour Profile Best For
Cucumber + Mint Cool, refreshing Summer hydration, post-workout
Cucumber + Lemon Citrusy, bright Morning water, vitamin C boost
Cucumber + Basil Herbaceous, earthy Spa water, evening relaxation
Cucumber + Strawberry Sweet, fruity Kids' water, party drinks

My favourite: Cucumber + mint + lemon. The three together taste like a drink you would pay a lot for at a hotel. At home, it costs only a few rupees and takes 5 minutes.

How Long Does Cucumber Water Last?

Keep cucumber in water for 1 to 2 hours in the fridge for good flavour. Drink it within 4 to 6 hours at room temperature, or within 24 hours in the fridge. Then throw away the slices and make a fresh batch.

Cucumber water lasts 4 to 6 hours at room temperature and 12 to 24 hours in the refrigerator. After 24 hours, the cucumber slices get mushy, lose their crunch, and can develop an off-flavour. Always discard the cucumber slices after one day and make a fresh batch.

Room temperature: 4 to 6 hours maximum. Bacteria grow faster in warm water with organic matter. If you carry cucumber water to work, keep it in an air-conditioned space or use an insulated bottle.

Refrigerated: 12 to 24 hours. This is the sweet spot. Make a batch in the evening, refrigerate overnight, and drink through the next day.

Signs it has gone bad: Cloudy water, slimy cucumber slices, sour smell, or fizzy bubbles. If you see any of these, discard and make a fresh batch.

These times are kitchen guidance, not lab results. They match the care advice we give for our own infuser bottles. Wash the bottle and the infuser well between batches.

Pani Me Khira Dalne Ke Fayde (Benefits of Cucumber in Water)

Pani me khira dalne ke fayde (the benefits of putting cucumber in water): the water tastes fresh, has almost no calories, and helps you drink more through the day. Khira (cucumber) is about 93 to 95 percent water. The slices add only a little potassium, so the main benefit is better hydration.

Khira pani kaise banaye (how to make it): Aadha khira dho lo aur patle slice kaato. Wash half a cucumber and cut thin slices. Slices ko thande paani ki bottle mein daalo. Put them in a bottle of cold water. Fridge mein 1 se 2 ghante rakho. Keep it in the fridge for 1 to 2 hours.

Kitni der tak rakh sakte hain (how long it keeps): Fridge mein 24 ghante tak. Up to 24 hours in the fridge. Bahar sirf 4 se 6 ghante. Only 4 to 6 hours outside. Uske baad slices phenk do. After that, throw the slices away.

Kya ye roz pee sakte hain (can you drink it every day)? Haan, zyada tar logon ke liye. Yes, for most healthy people, because it is mostly water. If a doctor has told you to limit fluids or potassium, ask them first. For a drink made from the whole cucumber, see our guide to cucumber juice benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drink cucumber water every day?

Yes, for most healthy adults. Cucumber water is mostly water, so it is safe to drink every day. Use fresh cucumber slices each day for the best taste and safety. If your doctor has told you to limit fluids or potassium, ask them first.

Does cucumber water help with bloating?

It might help a little, but no study has tested cucumber water for bloating. Cucumber contains potassium, which helps balance sodium, and too much salt can make you hold water. Drinking enough water also helps digestion. If bloating is frequent or painful, see a doctor.

Should I peel the cucumber before adding it to water?

Both ways work. The skin contains extra fibre and nutrients, but it can taste slightly bitter. If you prefer a milder flavour, peel the cucumber. If you want maximum nutrition, leave the skin on and wash it well.

How many calories does cucumber water have?

Very few. The water takes up only a small part of what is in the slices. Even if you ate 100 g of the slices, you would get only about 15 to 20 calories (USDA and IFCT 2017). This makes cucumber water one of the lowest-calorie flavoured drinks you can make.

Is cucumber 96 percent water?

Close, but a little lower for Indian cucumbers. IFCT 2017 lists the long green cucumber at 92.96 g of water per 100 g. The USDA lists cucumber with peel at 95.2 g. So about 93 to 95 percent is the honest figure.

Can I reuse cucumber slices for a second batch?

You can refill the water once with the same slices. The second batch will be milder. After the second fill, discard the slices. Do not reuse cucumber slices for more than 24 hours total.
