Can we add essential oil in a humidifier? The short answer is no - and this guide explains exactly why, what happens when you do, and what the better option is.

This is the honest answer. Not "it depends" - it is simply not what humidifiers are designed for. A humidifier is built to vaporise water. Essential oils behave completely differently from water and cause problems at every stage of the process.

What Happens When You Add Essential Oil to a Humidifier?

When you add essential oil to a humidifier, three things happen. First, the water dilutes the oil so the smell is very weak. The oil coats the ultrasonic plate or wick and degrades it, and the remaining oil residue grows bacteria in the tank if not cleaned every day.

Why Does Essential Oil Get So Diluted in a Humidifier?

Essential oil gets diluted in a humidifier because oil and water do not mix. Oil floats on top of the water in the tank and only tiny traces get pulled into the mist. Most of the oil stays behind in the tank while only pure water vapour is emitted.

Think of it this way: pour a spoon of olive oil into a glass of water. The oil floats on top. Stir it - the oil separates back to the surface.
