Panasonic is the brand to pick if you want a cooker made in India by a big name. Its listing says it was made by Panasonic in Tamil Nadu.

Usha is good for big families, as it cooks up to 1 kg of raw rice. For a pot with no coating, Divya is the only steel-pot brand here.

What Capacity Do You Need? (Best Rice Cooker for 5 People)

How Does a Rice Cooker Know When Rice Is Done?

Zojirushi, a Japanese rice cooker maker, puts it plainly: "As soon as all the water is absorbed by the rice, the temperature inside the cooker immediately rises."

It adds: "The appliance has a thermostat that detects when the temperature rises above 212°F and turns the heater off." 212°F is 100°C, the point where water boils.

This is why the water level matters so much. Too little water and the cooker trips early; too much and the rice turns mushy.

How Long Can Rice Stay on Keep Warm?

Some Indian listings promise long keep-warm times: Pigeon and Usha say 5 hours, and Crompton says 24 hours. Panasonic and Zojirushi are more careful.

Panasonic says: "Do not warm the rice for more than 12 hours." Zojirushi says: "For most rice cookers, 12 hours is the maximum".

India's Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024 from ICMR-NIN warn that "keeping cooked food in warm conditions for several hours promote bacterial growth". It also says "repeated heating of stored, cooked food should be avoided."

For leftovers, the NHS says: "Cool rice as quickly as possible (within 1 hour) and put it in the fridge or freezer." Rice should be "never reheated more than once."

Stat check: The UK Food Standards Agency says: "It's not the reheating that causes the problem, but the way the rice has been stored before it's reheated." So chill rice fast, and do not leave it out.

Non-Stick, Steel or Ceramic Inner Pot?

Treat a non-stick pot gently. Panasonic says: "Do not rinse the rice in the provided inner pan as non-stick coating may be damaged."

The ICMR-NIN guideline says non-stick cookware "should be discarded when the coating is worn-out or damaged." A worn pot means it is time for a new pot or a new cooker.
