Air cooler vs AC: the short answer
An air cooler is far cheaper to run than an AC in India. A cooler uses about 80 to 300 watts, while a 1.5-ton split AC uses about 1,200 to 2,000 watts. So a cooler can cost roughly Rs 250 to 500 a month, against Rs 2,000 to 4,000 for an AC at the same hours. But an AC cools better and works in any weather.
I have run both at home in Tirupati across some harsh South Indian summers. The honest truth is that "cheaper to run" and "cools better" are two different questions. Let me split them clearly, with India watts, rupees, and the one factor most people forget: your city's weather.
Q: Which is cheaper to run?
An air cooler, by a wide margin. It uses a fraction of the power an AC needs.
Q: Which cools better?
An AC. It drops the room temperature; a cooler only moves cool, moist air.
Q: Does a cooler work everywhere?
No. It works well in dry cities but struggles in humid coastal ones.
Which one uses less power?
An air cooler uses far less power than an AC. A room cooler draws about 80 to 300 watts. A 1.5-ton split AC draws about 1,200 to 2,000 watts. Even a 5-star inverter AC, the most efficient type, still uses several times more power than a cooler for the same hours of use.
The gap is huge once you measure it in units. One unit is one kilowatt-hour, the number your meter counts.
Orient Electric data: a 5-star air conditioner uses about 0.8 to 1.2 units per hour, while an air cooler uses only about 0.1 to 0.3 units per hour — Orient Electric, 2025.
NoBroker data: an air cooler runs at roughly 80 to 300 watts and 0.1 to 0.3 units an hour, while a 1.5-ton AC runs at about 1,000 to 2,000-plus watts and 1.2 to 1.8 units an hour — NoBroker, 2025.
So a cooler can use up to ten times less electricity than an AC. That single fact drives the whole running-cost story below.
What does each cost to run per month in India?
An air cooler costs about Rs 250 to 500 a month to run in India. A 1.5-ton AC costs about Rs 2,000 to 4,000 a month for the same use. The maths uses one simple formula: units = watts divided by 1,000, times hours per day, times 30 days, times your tariff of about Rs 7 to 8 per unit.
Here is the same sum worked out for 8 hours of daily use:
- Air cooler (150W): 0.15 × 8 × 30 = 36 units. At Rs 8 a unit, that is about Rs 288 a month.
- 1.5-ton split AC (1,500W): 1.5 × 8 × 30 = 360 units. At Rs 8 a unit, that is about Rs 2,880 a month.
Voltas data: running an air cooler costs roughly Rs 200 to 400 a month, while a 1.5-ton AC can cost Rs 2,000 to 4,000-plus a month at about 8 hours of daily use — Voltas, 2024.
Over a four-month summer, that is a difference of around Rs 8,000 to 10,000. For a deeper look at how appliance bills add up, see our air fryer electricity cost breakdown, which uses the same rupee maths.

Will an air cooler even work in your city?
An air cooler works well only in dry weather. A cooler cools air by passing it over wet pads, so water evaporates and the air turns cooler. In dry cities like Delhi, Pune, or Hyderabad in peak summer, this works well. In humid coastal cities like Mumbai or Chennai, the air is already damp, so a cooler does little and can feel sticky.
This is the single biggest reason people regret buying a cooler. They copy a friend in a dry city and find it useless in a humid one.
Voltas note: air coolers use evaporative cooling and are best suited to dry climates, while their effect drops sharply in humid conditions — Voltas, 2024.
An AC has no such limit. It pulls heat out of the room and removes moisture too, so it works the same in Jaipur as in Kochi. If your city is humid for most of the summer, a cooler is the wrong tool, no matter how cheap it is to run. To keep AC-room air comfortable, many homes pair it with a small humidifier — see our guide on humidifiers for AC rooms.
How much do air coolers and ACs cost to buy?
Air coolers are far cheaper to buy than ACs in India. A room air cooler usually costs about Rs 5,000 to 20,000. A 1.5-ton 5-star split AC usually costs about Rs 30,000 to 60,000 or more. A window AC often sits a little below a split AC on price. So a cooler can cost a quarter of what an AC does up front.
Price bands: air coolers in India range from about Rs 5,000 for a small tower to Rs 20,000 for a large desert cooler, while 1.5-ton inverter split ACs start around Rs 30,000 and rise past Rs 60,000 — Indian market listings, 2025–26.
If your budget is tight and your city is dry, a small cooler like the Symphony Diet 12T does the job for under Rs 5,000. For a bigger room, a larger cooler such as the Symphony Diet 3D 55i+ pushes more air. If you want true cold comfort and live in any climate, a 5-star inverter unit like the LG 1.5 Ton 5 Star split AC or a Voltas 1.5 Ton 5 Star window AC is the safer long-term buy.
Which one actually keeps you cooler?
An AC keeps you cooler than an air cooler. An AC lowers the actual room temperature, often by 8 to 10 degrees, and removes humidity. A cooler does not lower the room temperature. It blows cool, moist air at you, which helps your sweat dry. So an AC wins clearly on raw comfort, especially on the hottest nights.
Think of it like this. A cooler is a strong, damp breeze. An AC is a cold room. On a 42-degree afternoon, a breeze helps a little, but a cold room helps a lot.
There is one more point in the AC's favour. A cooler needs an open window to work, because it must pull in fresh air. An AC needs a closed room. So a cooler also lets in dust and outside noise, while an AC keeps the room sealed and quiet.
Air cooler vs AC: full comparison table
This table sums up the air cooler vs AC choice for an Indian home. Use it as a quick scan before you buy. Each row shows which one wins on that single point, so you can match the machine to what matters most for your room, your city, and your budget.
| What matters | Air cooler | Air conditioner (1.5 ton) | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power use | 80–300W | 1,200–2,000W | Cooler |
| Running cost / month | ~Rs 250–500 | ~Rs 2,000–4,000 | Cooler |
| Buying price | Rs 5,000–20,000 | Rs 30,000–60,000+ | Cooler |
| Cooling power | Moves cool air | Drops room temperature | AC |
| Works in humid cities | Poorly | Yes, anywhere | AC |
| Water needed | Yes, regular refills | None | AC |
| Window | Needs it open | Needs it closed | Depends |
| Installation | Plug and play | Needs fitting | Cooler |
| Maintenance | Clean pads, refill water | Filter, gas, service | Cooler |
Which should you buy?
Buy an air cooler if your city is dry, your budget is tight, and you want the lowest running cost. Buy an AC if you live in a humid city, want true cold comfort, or sleep poorly in the heat. Match the choice to your weather first, then your wallet. The cheapest machine is no help if it cannot cool your air.
- Check your city's weather — dry summer leans cooler; humid summer leans AC.
- Set your budget — under Rs 20,000 usually means a cooler, not an AC.
- Count your hours — long daily use makes the AC's higher bill hurt more.
- Look for the BEE star rating — on an AC, more stars means a lower bill.
- Think about water — a cooler needs refills and pad cleaning; an AC does not.
My honest take for most Indian families: if you live in a dry city and want to save money, a good air cooler is the smart, low-cost pick. If you live in a humid city or simply want a cold room on the worst nights, a 5-star inverter AC is worth the higher bill. Many homes do both, a cooler for spring and an AC for the peak weeks. Frequently Asked Questions
Is an air cooler cheaper than an AC?
Yes, in both buying and running. A cooler costs about Rs 5,000 to 20,000 and Rs 250 to 500 a month to run. A 1.5-ton AC costs about Rs 30,000 to 60,000 and Rs 2,000 to 4,000 a month. The cooler is much cheaper.
How much electricity does an air cooler use vs an AC?
An air cooler uses about 80 to 300 watts, or 0.1 to 0.3 units an hour. A 1.5-ton AC uses about 1,200 to 2,000 watts, or 1.2 to 1.8 units an hour. The AC can use up to ten times more power.
Does an air cooler work in humid cities like Mumbai?
Not well. A cooler cools by evaporating water, which needs dry air. In humid coastal cities like Mumbai or Chennai, the air is already damp, so a cooler gives little relief and can feel sticky. An AC is the better choice there.
Does an air cooler cool as well as an AC?
No. An AC lowers the room temperature by 8 to 10 degrees and removes humidity. A cooler does not lower the room temperature; it blows cool, moist air to help sweat dry. An AC keeps you cooler, especially on the hottest days.
Is a 5-star inverter AC worth the extra money?
If you run an AC for long hours, yes. A 5-star inverter AC uses less power than a lower-star model for the same cooling, so it lowers your monthly bill. The higher buying price pays back over a few summers of heavy use.
Can I use an air cooler and an AC together?
Yes, many homes do. They run a cheap cooler in the milder weeks of spring and early summer, then switch to the AC for the few brutal peak weeks. This keeps the power bill down while still giving cold comfort when it is needed most.
