Matcha Protein Shake: High-Protein Recipe for Pre and Post Workout
Matcha Protein Shake: High-Protein Recipe for Pre and Post Workout
Matcha protein shakes combine two things that work well together: the natural caffeine and EGCG of matcha (useful for fat oxidation during exercise) with the muscle-recovery benefits of protein. This recipe gives you 30g+ of protein per serving using ingredients available in India.

Why Matcha Works Well in Protein Shakes
Pre-Workout vs Post-Workout Timing
| Timing | Goal | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 30–60 min before workout | Energy, fat burn, endurance | Best use of matcha's caffeine + EGCG |
| Within 30 min after workout | Muscle recovery | Prioritise protein here; matcha is a bonus |
| Morning (non-training day) | Calm energy, nutrition | Good breakfast option |
Protein Powder Options in India
Whey protein: Fast-absorbing, good for post-workout. Myprotein, Optimum Nutrition, and MuscleBlaze are reliable brands widely available in India.
Plant protein (pea + rice blend): Vegan-friendly, good amino acid profile. Oziva, Wellbeing Nutrition, and Urban Platter have plant protein options in India.
Casein protein: Slower-absorbing — good for morning or before-bed use rather than workout timing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does matcha go well with protein powder?
Yes. Vanilla-flavoured protein powder is the easiest pairing — the sweetness balances matcha's bitterness. Unflavoured protein also works well with a small amount of honey. Chocolate protein can overpower the matcha flavour. Avoid strongly flavoured proteins like caramel or birthday cake — they clash with matcha's earthy notes.
Can I make a matcha protein shake without a blender?
Yes, but with limitations. Use a shaker bottle — add matcha and 2 tbsp of milk first, shake vigorously to break up the matcha, then add protein powder and shake again. Protein powder blends better with cold liquid in a shaker than matcha does. The result will be slightly less smooth than a blended shake, and banana cannot be used without a blender.
