Banana Chocolate Latte: An Indulgent Dessert Coffee Recipe in 5 Minutes

By Saran Reddy, Founder — InstaCuppa | April 5, 2026 | 4 min read | Last updated: April 5, 2026

A banana chocolate latte is a dessert-style coffee made by blending mashed ripe banana and cocoa powder into strong coffee, then topping it with hot frothed milk. It tastes like a mocha milkshake crossed with a latte — rich, creamy, and naturally sweet. The whole recipe takes 5 minutes with a handheld milk frother.

This is the recipe people never expect to love. When I first saw banana and coffee in the same sentence, I was sceptical. But ripe banana does something magical in hot coffee — it adds a natural sweetness and a velvety body that makes the drink feel indulgent without needing heavy cream or syrups. Add cocoa powder, and you have a drink that tastes like dessert but takes less time to make than toast.

I originally found this combination while experimenting with our InstaCuppa frother and a basket of overripe bananas that needed using up. Two years later, it has become one of the most popular recipes on our YouTube channel. If you are someone who likes sweet, creamy coffee but wants to cut down on sugar and processed syrups, this is your drink.

Ingredients

  • Strong coffee or espresso — 60 ml
  • Milk — 200 ml
  • Ripe banana — half (the riper, the sweeter)
  • Cocoa powder — 1 teaspoon (unsweetened)
  • Sugar — 1 teaspoon (optional — ripe banana adds natural sweetness)

Step-by-Step: How to Make a Banana Chocolate Latte

  1. Mash the banana. Take half a ripe banana and mash it thoroughly with a fork in the bottom of your mug. You want a smooth paste with no large chunks — the riper the banana, the easier this is. Overripe bananas with brown spots are perfect for this recipe.
  2. Brew strong coffee. Make 60 ml of strong coffee using your preferred method — instant coffee (2 teaspoons in 60 ml hot water), moka pot, AeroPress, or filter coffee. The coffee needs to be concentrated so the banana and cocoa do not overpower it.
  3. Mix cocoa and sugar into coffee. Add 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder and 1 teaspoon of sugar to the hot coffee. Stir until dissolved. The heat helps the cocoa powder blend in smoothly.
  4. Combine coffee with mashed banana. Pour the cocoa coffee over the mashed banana in your mug. Use your frother for 5-10 seconds to blend the banana into the coffee until smooth. This is where the magic happens — the banana dissolves into the hot coffee and creates a naturally thick, sweet base.
  5. Heat the milk. Warm 200 ml of milk in a saucepan or microwave until steaming (around 65-70 degrees Celsius).
  6. Froth the milk. Froth the heated milk with your InstaCuppa frother for 15-20 seconds until thick and creamy.
  7. Pour and froth again briefly. Pour the frothed milk into the banana-chocolate coffee base. Give the whole drink one final 5-second froth to blend everything together. The result is a creamy, chocolatey, banana-scented latte with a gorgeous foam top.

Tips & Variations

  • Use overripe bananas: Brown-spotted bananas are sweeter, softer, and mash more smoothly. Green or barely-ripe bananas leave a starchy taste that does not work well in coffee.
  • Skip the sugar: If your banana is ripe enough, you may not need any added sugar at all. Taste the base after blending the banana in before deciding.
  • Iced version: Make the banana-cocoa-coffee base, let it cool, add cold milk and ice, then froth the cold milk on top. Tastes like a chocolate banana milkshake with coffee.
  • Add peanut butter: For an even more indulgent version, add half a teaspoon of peanut butter to the mashed banana before adding coffee. The combination of peanut butter, banana, chocolate, and coffee is outrageous.

Which Frother to Use

For this recipe, the frother does triple duty — blending the banana into the coffee, dissolving the cocoa, and frothing the milk. I use the InstaCuppa Battery-Operated Milk Frother (Rs 899) which handles all three jobs in seconds. The 19,000 RPM motor breaks down the banana into a smooth paste instantly. For even more versatility, the InstaCuppa Rechargeable Frother (Rs 699) offers 3 speed settings — use medium for blending and high for frothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does banana taste weird in coffee?

Not at all. Ripe banana blended into hot coffee creates a naturally sweet, creamy base that tastes like a dessert drink. The banana flavour is subtle — it adds body and sweetness rather than an overpowering banana taste. Combined with cocoa, it tastes like a chocolate banana milkshake in latte form.

Can I use cocoa powder instead of chocolate syrup?

Yes, unsweetened cocoa powder is actually preferred for this recipe. It gives a deeper, more genuine chocolate flavour without the extra sugar found in chocolate syrups. One teaspoon of cocoa powder is all you need per cup.

Will the banana leave chunks in my latte?

Not if you use a ripe banana and blend it properly. Mash the banana with a fork first, then use your frother to blend it into the hot coffee for 5-10 seconds. The heat dissolves the banana into a smooth paste. Overripe bananas work best.

Is banana chocolate latte healthy?

Compared to a cafe mocha loaded with chocolate syrup and whipped cream, yes. The banana provides natural sweetness (so you can skip or reduce sugar), potassium, and fibre. Unsweetened cocoa powder adds antioxidants. It is a more nutritious way to enjoy a sweet coffee drink.
