Which Adapter to Use in Your InstaCuppa 3-in-1 Espresso Maker (Setup & Quick Start Guide)
Which Adapter Do You Need?
The InstaCuppa 3-in-1 Espresso Coffee Maker comes with three adapters in the box. Each one fits a different coffee type. Pick the adapter that matches what you want to brew.
| Adapter | Coffee Type | When to Use | Skill Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee Powder Adapter (Pressurized) | Fresh ground coffee | Weekday mornings, budget brewing | Low — pressurized basket does the work |
| Nespresso Capsule Adapter | Nespresso Original Line pods | Quick single cups, lazy mornings | None — pop in and press |
| Dolce Gusto Pods Adapter | Dolce Gusto capsules | Variety drinks (latte, chocolate, tea) | None — pop in and press |
The box also includes two Coffee Grounds Holders (for single and double shots), a Spoon and Tamperer combo tool, and the 700 ml removable water tank.
How to Use the Ground Coffee Adapter
The Coffee Powder Adapter is a pressurized portafilter. It creates back-pressure through a tiny hole at the bottom. This means your grind and tamp do not need to be perfect — the adapter helps.
- Fill the water tank — remove it, fill to the 700 ml line, and slide it back.
- Power on the machine — press the power button and wait 40 seconds for heat-up. The LED screen shows ready.
- Load the Coffee Grounds Holder — place it into the Coffee Powder Adapter. Add 7-8 grams of fine espresso grind for a single shot (14-16 grams for double).
- Tamp the coffee — use the included Spoon and Tamperer. Press down firmly and evenly. About 15 kg of pressure — like pushing down on a bathroom scale until it reads 15.
- Insert the adapter — push it into the brew head and twist to lock. It should feel snug.
- Place your cup — adjust the cup tray to fit your cup height.
- Select cup size — choose 25 ml (ristretto), 40 ml (espresso), or 110 ml (lungo) on the LED screen.
- Press brew — the pump starts. Your shot should pour in 20-30 seconds.
Grind tip: Pre-ground supermarket coffee is usually too coarse. It flows too fast and tastes sour. Use a burr grinder set to fine. The InstaCuppa Electric Burr Grinder works well for this.
How to Use the Nespresso Adapter
The Nespresso Capsule Adapter works with Nespresso Original Line pods only. It does not work with Nespresso Vertuo pods. Vertuo capsules are larger and use a different extraction system.
- Insert the Nespresso adapter — push it into the brew head and twist to lock.
- Drop in a capsule — place one Nespresso Original Line capsule into the adapter. The flat side faces up.
- Close the brew head — the machine pierces the capsule foil.
- Select your cup size — 25 ml or 40 ml work best for Nespresso.
- Press brew — the pump pushes water through the capsule. Done in 20-25 seconds.
- Eject the used capsule — open the brew head and remove the spent pod.
Compatible brands in India: Lavazza, Wellhome, Bonhomia, Real Coffee, and official Nespresso Original capsules. Third-party capsules cost Rs 18-30 each — cheaper than Nespresso brand at Rs 35-45.
How to Use the Dolce Gusto Adapter
The Dolce Gusto Pods Adapter fits the round, colourful Dolce Gusto capsules. These capsules come in more variety than Nespresso — espresso, cappuccino, latte, hot chocolate, and iced drinks.
- Insert the Dolce Gusto adapter — push into the brew head and twist to lock.
- Place one capsule — drop a Dolce Gusto capsule into the adapter. Match the flat side up.
- Close the brew head — the adapter pierces the capsule.
- Select cup size — 110 ml works best for Dolce Gusto drinks.
- Press brew — water flows through the capsule in 30-60 seconds.
For milk-based Dolce Gusto drinks: Cappuccino and latte boxes include separate milk capsules. Brew the milk capsule first, then the coffee capsule into the same cup. This gives you a layered drink.

How to Switch Between Adapters
Switching adapters takes about 10 seconds. The brew head uses a twist-lock system. Each adapter clicks into the same slot.
- Remove the current adapter — twist it counter-clockwise and pull it out.
- Run a quick rinse — press the brew button with no adapter to flush leftover water. This clears any residue from the last brew.
- Insert the new adapter — push in and twist clockwise to lock.
- Load your coffee or pod — proceed as normal.
I recommend running the self-cleaning cycle once a week if you switch adapters often. One-touch cleaning flushes the system in about 90 seconds.
What If the Adapter Does Not Fit?
Some users report adapters feeling stiff on first use. This is normal — the rubber seals are tight when new. They loosen slightly after 3-4 uses.
If the adapter will not lock:
- Make sure you are using the right adapter for your coffee type. They look similar but have different sizes.
- Check for coffee grounds stuck in the brew head. Wipe the seal area with a damp cloth.
- Push the adapter in firmly before twisting. A half-push will not engage the lock.
- If a Nespresso capsule jams, the capsule may be the wrong type. Vertuo capsules are too large and will not fit.
Box contents reminder: The InstaCuppa 3-in-1 ships with 2 Coffee Grounds Holders, 1 Coffee Powder Adapter (pressurized), 1 Nespresso Capsule Adapter, 1 Dolce Gusto Pods Adapter, 1 Spoon and Tamperer, 1 removable 700 ml Water Tank, and 1 Adjustable Cup Tray.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Nespresso Vertuo pods?
No. Only Nespresso Original Line capsules work. Vertuo pods are larger and use a spinning extraction system that requires a Vertuo machine.
Do I need to buy adapters separately?
No. All three adapters come in the box with the InstaCuppa 3-in-1 Espresso Coffee Maker. Nothing extra to buy.
How fine should I grind for the ground coffee adapter?
Use a fine espresso grind — about the texture of table salt. Too coarse and the shot runs fast (sour). Too fine and it chokes (bitter). A burr grinder helps you dial in.
Can I use reusable capsules?
Some reusable Nespresso-compatible capsules work. Results vary by brand. The seal may not be as tight as official pods, so expect weaker extraction.
Should I clean between adapter switches?
A quick water rinse (press brew with no adapter) is enough for daily switches. Run the full self-cleaning cycle once a week.
