What can you cook in an electric tandoor?
An electric tandoor cooks almost every smoky Indian favourite at home. You can make paneer tikka, chicken tikka, seekh kebab, naan, roti, tandoori aloo, grilled veg, fish tikka and even pizza. It runs on a normal socket. No charcoal, no smoke, no mess.
I have used one in my own kitchen for months. The closed metal chamber holds heat from the top and sides. That heat gives real char marks. You just plug in, preheat, and load your skewers.
Wattage range: most home electric tandoors in India run between 1100 and 2200 watts, and cook tikka, naan, aloo tikka and pizza — CashKaro, 2026.

12 everyday dishes you can make
Here are 12 dishes that work well in an electric tandoor. Each one lists a rough heat setting and time. Treat them as a starting point. Your model may run a little hotter or cooler.
1. Paneer Tikka
Cut paneer into cubes. Marinate in hung curd, ginger-garlic, and red chilli for 30 minutes. Thread onto skewers with onion and capsicum. Cook at about 230°C for 10 to 12 minutes. Flip once for even char.
2. Chicken Tikka
Use boneless thigh or breast pieces. Marinate for one hour in curd and spices. Skewer and cook at about 240°C for 12 to 15 minutes. Make sure the inside is no longer pink before serving.
3. Tandoori Naan
Roll soft dough into ovals. Brush one side with water so it sticks. Preheat to about 250°C and bake on the rack for 2 to 3 minutes. The naan puffs and blisters fast.
4. Tandoori Roti
Use whole-wheat atta dough. Roll thicker than a chapati. Cook on the rack at about 240°C for 2 to 3 minutes. Brush with ghee when it comes out.
5. Seekh Kebab
Mix minced meat or soya with onion, spices and a little besan. Press around metal skewers. Cook at about 250°C for 12 to 15 minutes. Turn so all sides brown evenly.
6. Tandoori Aloo
Parboil baby potatoes first. Scoop and stuff with a spiced paneer filling if you like. Cook at about 200°C for 15 to 18 minutes. The lower heat keeps them soft inside.
7. Grilled Vegetables
Toss capsicum, onion, mushroom and baby corn in oil and spice. Spread on the tray. Cook at about 210°C for 10 to 12 minutes. Shake the tray once midway.
8. Tandoori Chicken Legs
Score the legs deep. Marinate overnight for the best flavour. Cook at about 230°C for 25 to 30 minutes. Baste with oil once so the skin does not dry out.
9. Tandoori Pizza
Use a ready or homemade base. Add sauce, cheese and toppings. Bake on the rack at about 220°C to 250°C for 8 to 12 minutes. The base turns crisp and the cheese melts.
10. Tandoori Gobi
Break cauliflower into florets. Coat in curd and spice. Cook at about 200°C for about 15 minutes. The edges go golden and slightly crisp.
11. Fish Tikka
Use firm fish like surmai or basa. Marinate for just 20 to 30 minutes, since fish is delicate. Cook at about 230°C for 8 to 10 minutes. Handle gently when you flip.
12. Garlic Bread
Slice a baguette or pav. Spread garlic butter and herbs. Toast on the rack at about 200°C for 6 to 8 minutes. Watch it closely near the end.
No tandoor yet? Popular home picks like the Glen and Wonderchef models start near Rs 1,500.

How to get the best results
An electric tandoor is simple, but a few habits make a big difference. These five steps cover almost every dish. Follow them and your food chars well without drying out.
- Preheat fully — run the tandoor empty with the lid closed for 8 to 10 minutes before loading food.
- Marinate the right time — keep paneer and fish at 20 to 30 minutes, and chicken at 30 to 60 minutes.
- Brush oil once — a light coat stops sticking; do not keep adding oil, as drips can smoke.
- Match the tool — skewers for kebabs and tikka, the wire rack for naan, roti and pizza.
- Flip at halftime — turn skewers once so every side gets even colour and heat.
One more tip from my own kitchen. Keep a small bowl of water and a brush near the tandoor. A quick brush on naan dough helps it stick and puff better.
Is electric tandoor food healthy?
Electric tandoor food is fairly healthy because it uses little oil and no charcoal smoke. It is lighter than deep frying. But one rule matters: do not burn your food black. Heavy charring brings a small but real health risk.
Health note: cooking meat at high heat or over open flame forms HCAs and PAHs, chemicals that rise sharply above 300°F (about 150°C) and are linked to cancer risk in studies — National Cancer Institute.
The good news is that an electric tandoor gives you control. You can hold a steady 230°C instead of a roaring flame. That helps you get char marks without burning. Cook chicken until the centre reaches about 74°C to be safe — USDA guidance.
So enjoy your tikka. Just scrape off any badly burnt bits before eating.
How much does it cost to run?
An electric tandoor is cheap to run for home use. A 2000-watt model draws about 2 units of power per hour. Most dishes finish in 10 to 30 minutes, so a full meal often costs only a few rupees.
Running cost: at the typical Indian household tariff of about Rs 8 per unit, one hour of a 2000-watt tandoor costs roughly Rs 16 — based on Central Electricity Authority tariff data.
Compare that to ordering tandoori food outside. One restaurant plate of paneer tikka can cost Rs 250 or more. At home you make a full tray for far less.

Frequently Asked Questions
What can you cook in an electric tandoor?
An electric tandoor cooks paneer tikka, chicken tikka, seekh kebab, tandoori naan and roti, tandoori aloo, grilled vegetables, fish tikka, gobi and even pizza. It plugs into a normal home socket. The closed chamber gives smoky char marks without charcoal.
What temperature should an electric tandoor be for tikka?
Set an electric tandoor to about 230°C to 250°C for paneer and chicken tikka. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes and flip once. Lower it to around 200°C for potatoes and vegetables so they stay soft inside.
How long does naan take in an electric tandoor?
Tandoori naan takes only 2 to 3 minutes in a hot electric tandoor. Preheat to about 250°C first. The dough puffs and blisters fast on the hot surface, much like in a clay tandoor.
Do I need skewers or a wire rack?
Use the metal skewers for seekh kebab, paneer cubes and tikka pieces. Use the wire rack or tray for naan, roti, whole chicken legs and pizza. Most home electric tandoors come with both.
Is food from an electric tandoor healthy?
An electric tandoor uses little oil and no charcoal smoke, so it is lighter than deep frying. Avoid burning food black. Charring meat at very high heat can form HCAs and PAHs, which studies link to higher cancer risk.
How much electricity does an electric tandoor use?
A 2000-watt electric tandoor uses about 2 units of power in one hour. At Rs 8 per unit, that is roughly Rs 16 per hour. Most dishes cook in 10 to 30 minutes, so the real cost per meal stays small.
Can I bake pizza in an electric tandoor?
Yes. Set the electric tandoor to about 220°C to 250°C and bake pizza on the wire rack for 8 to 12 minutes. The high, enclosed heat crisps the base and melts the cheese well.
