Thyroid Diet Plan India: What to Eat and Avoid for Thyroid Health
By InstaCuppa Team | May 2026 | 8 min read
This article is for general information only. Thyroid conditions are medical issues. Always consult your doctor before making significant changes to your diet, especially if you are on thyroid medication. Some foods can affect how thyroid medicine works in the body.
Thyroid problems affect a huge number of Indians — mostly women. A slow thyroid (hypothyroidism) is the most common type. It causes weight gain, tiredness, hair fall, hard stools, feeling cold, and slow thinking.
Most people with thyroid disease take medicine for it. But what you eat can help your medicine work well — or make it less effective. Diet can also help reduce symptoms that medicine alone does not fully fix.
This guide covers the key foods to eat and avoid for thyroid health in India.
Most thyroid patients know to take their medicine in the morning. But many do not know that eating too soon after taking the medicine makes it less effective. Take thyroid medicine on an empty stomach. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything other than water. Coffee, chai, milk, and even some foods eaten too soon can cut the medicine's effect by 30 to 40%. This one habit can make a big difference in how well your thyroid is managed.
How Food Affects the Thyroid
The thyroid gland makes hormones that control your energy, weight, body heat, and mood. To do this, it needs certain nutrients from food — mainly iodine and the mineral selenium.
Some foods help the thyroid work well. Others block it. And some foods can affect how thyroid medicine works in the body.
The goal of a thyroid diet is simple: eat more foods that help the thyroid. Eat less of the ones that block it. And eat at the right time around your thyroid medicine.
Best Foods for Thyroid Health
Iodine-Rich Foods
Iodine is the main nutrient the thyroid needs. Without enough iodine, the thyroid cannot make its hormones.
- Iodised salt: Use iodised salt in cooking. Most Indian salt is already iodised, but check the label.
- Fish and seafood: Fish like rohu, katla, and mackerel are good iodine sources. Eat 2 to 3 times a week.
- Eggs: Good source of iodine and selenium. Eat daily.
- Dairy (milk, curd): Both have iodine. 1 to 2 cups daily is fine.
Selenium-Rich Foods
Selenium helps the body change thyroid hormones into the form the body can use. Low selenium makes thyroid symptoms worse even if iodine is fine.
- Eggs: Excellent source of selenium. Eat 2 per day.
- Sunflower seeds: Very good. Add to curd or salads.
- Mushrooms: Good source. Add to sabzi or omelette.
- Brown rice: Has selenium. Better than white rice for thyroid health too.
Zinc-Rich Foods
Zinc helps the body make thyroid hormones. It also helps change them into the form the body can use.
- Pumpkin seeds — eat a handful daily. Very rich in zinc.
- Chickpeas (chana) — chana dal or whole chana
- Lentils (dal) — all types of dal have zinc
- Chicken and fish — good sources of zinc
Anti-Swelling Foods
Thyroid disease causes swelling in the body. Eating foods that reduce swelling helps with symptoms like joint pain, puffiness, and tiredness.
- Turmeric — add to dal, sabzi, or warm milk daily
- Ginger — add to chai, sabzi, or warm water
- Fatty fish — omega-3 fat reduces swelling
- Walnuts — add to breakfast or eat as a snack
- Flaxseeds — grind and add to curd or roti dough
High-Fibre Foods
Constipation is a very common symptom of hypothyroidism. High-fibre foods help with this.
- Jowar, bajra, ragi roti — much better than white flour for digestion
- All dals — moong, masoor, chana, toor
- Vegetables — eat at every meal
- Fruits — papaya is especially good for constipation
Foods That Can Affect the Thyroid
Some foods can block the thyroid from working well when eaten raw in very large amounts. The effect on the thyroid is much less when these foods are cooked.
Important: these foods are still healthy. You do not need to cut them out. Just do not eat them raw in very large amounts. Cooking reduces their effect on the thyroid by a lot.
Raw Cruciferous Vegetables (Limit Raw, Not Cooked)
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and kale can slow down the thyroid if eaten raw in very large amounts.
Cooked versions are mostly fine. Normal daily amounts of cooked cauliflower or cabbage in sabzi are safe. Do not drink raw cabbage or broccoli juice in large amounts every day.
Soy in Large Amounts
Soy can block the thyroid if eaten in large amounts. It can also reduce how well thyroid medicine works if you eat it too close to the time you take your medicine.
Normal amounts of soy in dal or tofu once in a while are fine. Avoid soy milk as a daily drink or large amounts of soy supplements.
Gluten (If You Have Thyroid + Gut Issues)
Some people with thyroid disease also react badly to gluten. If you have both, eating less gluten can help. But this is not needed for everyone with thyroid disease. Talk to your doctor if you think gluten is a problem for you.
Excess Iodine
Too much iodine can also harm the thyroid — not just too little. Do not take iodine pills unless your doctor says to. Using iodised salt in normal cooking amounts is safe for most people.
Timing: When to Eat Around Thyroid Medicine
- Take thyroid medicine on an empty stomach. First thing in the morning.
- Wait 30 to 60 minutes before eating or drinking (except water).
- Wait 4 hours before eating high-calcium foods (milk, curd, paneer) if you take calcium supplements too.
- Avoid coffee or chai within 30 minutes of taking medicine — caffeine reduces how well the medicine is absorbed.
- Eat meals at regular times each day. Consistent meal timing helps the body manage hormones better.
Sample Day Thyroid Diet Plan
On Waking Up

Breakfast
2 eggs (boiled or scrambled) + 2 jowar rotis + any vegetable sabzi. Or 1 bowl vegetable oats + 2 boiled eggs. Or moong dal chilla + curd.

Dinner
Light. 2 jowar rotis + vegetable sabzi + dal. Eat dinner at least 2 to 3 hours before sleeping.
Lifestyle Habits That Help with Thyroid
Diet alone is not enough. These simple habits help the thyroid work better and improve how you feel.
Sleep 7 to 8 Hours
The thyroid works with the body's sleep cycle. Poor sleep makes thyroid symptoms worse — more tiredness, more hair fall, more weight gain. Set a fixed sleep and wake time. Keep your phone away at night. This is not optional if you have thyroid disease.
Walk Daily — Even 20 Minutes
Exercise helps the thyroid work better. It also helps with weight gain — one of the hardest parts of having a slow thyroid. You do not need to run or go to a gym. A 20 to 30 minute walk every day is enough to make a real difference. Morning walks in sunlight are good because sunlight helps vitamin D levels, which are often low in thyroid patients.
Reduce Stress
Stress raises the stress hormone cortisol. High cortisol makes thyroid disease worse. It can stop thyroid hormones from working well. 5 minutes of deep breathing each morning helps. Even just putting your phone down 30 minutes before bed can reduce stress hormones at night.
Get Regular Blood Tests
Check your TSH levels every 6 months if your thyroid is stable. Or every 3 months if you changed your medicine dose lately. Knowing your numbers helps you and your doctor make better choices about diet and medicine.

Can I eat rice if I have thyroid disease?
Yes. Rice does not directly affect the thyroid. But for people with a slow thyroid who are trying to manage weight, smaller portions are better. 1 small bowl per meal is fine. Brown rice or parboiled rice is better than white rice. Eat rice with dal and vegetables to slow the blood sugar effect.
Should I avoid cauliflower and cabbage if I have thyroid?
No — not when cooked. Raw cruciferous vegetables in very large amounts can affect thyroid function. But normal cooked amounts of cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli in sabzi are fine. Cooking breaks down the compounds that affect the thyroid. Only avoid these vegetables raw in very large amounts — like drinking raw cabbage juice daily.
Does coffee affect thyroid medicine?
Yes. Coffee taken too soon after thyroid medicine reduces how well the medicine is absorbed by 30 to 40%. Wait at least 30 to 60 minutes after taking your medicine before drinking coffee or chai. Water is the only safe thing to consume right after taking thyroid medicine.
