Sandwich grill vs toaster comes down to one thing: fillings. A griller presses a filled sandwich between hot plates. A pop-up toaster only browns plain slices.
A sandwich maker is a griller with different plates. So the real choice is plates or slots. In India we usually call the flat-plate machine a "griller". This guide uses that word too.
What Is the Difference Between a Toaster, a Griller and a Sandwich Maker?
Quick answer: A toaster browns bread slices in slots with radiant heat. A griller and a sandwich maker both press food between two hot plates. The griller has flat ribbed plates. The sandwich maker has triangle pocket plates.
The Indian safety standard for these machines spells it out. IS 302-2-9 from the Bureau of Indian Standards defines a toaster as an appliance for "toasting slices of bread by radiant heat".
The same standard calls a griller a "contact grill". Food sits on a heated surface. A second heated surface can close over it. A sandwich maker works the same way.
- Pop-up toaster. Bread stands in slots. Hot wires brown both sides. The slices pop up when done.
- Griller (contact grill). Flat or ribbed plates press the food from above and below. It leaves grill lines.
- Sandwich maker. Two plates with triangle pockets. They cut and seal the sandwich into closed triangles.
Prestige sells both plate styles under one name, "sandwich toaster". Its user manual shows the PGMFB model with a grill plate and the PSMFB with a sandwich plate. Both are rated 800 W.
Toaster vs Griller vs Sandwich Maker: Side by Side
Quick answer: Pick the toaster for plain toast. Pick the griller for flat, pressed sandwiches and grilled paneer or vegetables. Pick the sandwich maker for sealed, stuffed triangles that do not leak.
| Point | Pop-up toaster | Griller | Sandwich maker |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it heats | Radiant heat in slots | Two hot flat or ribbed plates | Two hot triangle pocket plates |
| Takes fillings? | No | Yes | Yes |
| What comes out | Plain toast | Flat sandwich with grill lines | Sealed triangle sandwiches |
| Thick fillings | Not possible | Good, the lid presses down | Limited, overfilling stops it closing |
| Other uses | Warming buns (some models) | Paneer, vegetables, panini | Mostly sandwiches |
| Cleaning | Empty the crumb tray | Wipe the plates | Wipe the pockets |
Most buyers really choose between the last two columns. If plain toast with butter is all you eat, the toaster is quicker. For anything with a filling, you need plates.
Toast Sandwich vs Grill Sandwich: What Is the Difference?
Quick answer: Both use the same bread and filling. A toast sandwich usually comes from a sandwich maker as sealed triangles. A grill sandwich is pressed flat in a griller and gets dark grill lines.
The machine changes the shape, not the taste of the filling. Pocket plates press the edges shut. That keeps aloo or cheese inside, which suits kids' tiffin.
Ribbed grill plates press the whole sandwich flat. The bread gets crisp lines and the edges stay open. This is the café-style grilled sandwich. A panini press does the same job. Our panini press vs sandwich maker guide covers that one.
Griller vs Sandwich Maker: Which Plates Suit You?
Quick answer: Choose grill plates if you want big, flat sandwiches or want to grill paneer and vegetables. Choose pocket plates if you want small, sealed sandwiches with no mess.
Grill plates handle thicker fillings, because they press the whole sandwich flat instead of sealing pockets. Borosil's Prime Grill has one large non-stick grill plate. Borosil says it makes up to 2 large sandwiches at once, and the plate opens to 90°.
Pocket plates are less forgiving. Prestige's manual warns against overfilling. If the lid will not close, it says to reduce the filling, not press harder.
Good to know: Wattage alone does not make a better sandwich. The Prestige grill and sandwich models are both 800 W, and the Borosil Prime Grill is 700 W. Our sandwich maker wattage guide explains what the number changes.
Can a Pop-Up Toaster Make a Sandwich?
Quick answer: Not a filled one. A pop-up toaster only takes plain slices. Fillings would fall onto the hot wires and burn. Toast the bread first, then add the filling.
The BIS standard does list a "sandwich-toasting attachment" for toasters. It is an add-on accessory, not part of a plain pop-up toaster.
So a toaster suits bread-and-butter mornings. Some models add extras. Philips says its HD2582 toaster has two large variable slots and a bun warming rack on top.
How Brown Should Toast or a Grilled Sandwich Be?
Quick answer: Golden, not dark brown. The UK Food Standards Agency says to aim for a golden yellow colour, or lighter, when toasting bread. Darker browning makes more acrylamide.
This applies to all three machines. The tip comes from the Food Standards Agency's "go for gold" advice, shared by the NHS.
The European food safety agency, EFSA, explains why. Acrylamide forms in starchy foods cooked above about 120°C with little moisture. EFSA says acrylamide in food potentially increases the risk of cancer for all age groups.
The fix is simple. Use a lower browning setting. On a griller or sandwich maker, open the lid as soon as the bread turns golden.
Which Uses Less Electricity: Toaster or Griller?
Quick answer: Both use very little. An 800 W griller running for 5 minutes uses about 0.07 units. A toaster of similar power running for 3 minutes uses about 0.04 units. Cooking time matters more than wattage.
Here is the maths. Units (kWh) equal watts times hours, divided by 1,000. So 800 W for 5 minutes is 800 × 5 ÷ 60 ÷ 1,000. That comes to about 0.07 units.
Multiply by your tariff per unit to get the cost. For one breakfast, the difference between the three machines is tiny. Choose by what you cook, not by the watt number.
How Do You Clean a Toaster, Griller or Sandwich Maker?
Quick answer: Unplug and let it cool. Never dip it in water. Wipe the non-stick plates with a soft damp cloth. Empty a toaster's crumb tray often.
Prestige's manual gives clear rules for its sandwich toasters:
- Unplug the machine and let it cool fully.
- Do not dip it in water or wash it under a tap.
- Wipe the non-stick plates with a soft damp cloth, then dry them.
- Use a wooden or plastic spatula, never a knife or fork.
- If you use it often, clear out crumbs at least once a week.

Which One Should You Buy?
Quick answer: Buy a griller if you want one machine for sandwiches, paneer and vegetables. Buy a sandwich maker for sealed tiffin sandwiches. Buy a pop-up toaster only if you eat plain toast most days.
- Name your main breakfast. Stuffed sandwiches mean plates. Plain toast means slots.
- Think about fillings. Thick or wet fillings suit grill plates. Small, neat fillings suit pocket plates.
- Count your eaters. A bigger grill plate makes more sandwiches per batch.
- Check the cleaning. Removable plates or a crumb tray save time.
Here are three widely sold examples, one of each type:
- Griller: Prestige PGMFB 800 W Grill Sandwich Toaster with fixed grill plates.
- Sandwich maker: Prestige PSMFB 800 W Sandwich Toaster with sandwich plates.
- Pop-up toaster: Philips HD2582/00 two-slice toaster with a bun warmer.

Thinking of waffles too? A waffle maker is a cousin of the griller. The BIS standard describes a waffle iron as two hot hinged plates shaped to hold batter. Our waffle maker vs sandwich maker guide compares the two.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a toaster and a griller?
A toaster browns plain bread slices in slots using radiant heat. A griller is a contact grill. It presses food between hot plates, so it can cook a filled sandwich. A toaster cannot hold fillings.
Is a sandwich grill the same as a sandwich maker?
They work the same way. Both press bread between two hot plates. The difference is the plate shape. A sandwich maker has triangle pocket plates that seal the edges. A griller has flat ribbed plates that leave grill lines.
What is the difference between a toast sandwich and a grill sandwich?
A toast sandwich is usually made in a sandwich maker. It comes out as sealed triangles. A grill sandwich is pressed flat in a griller and has dark grill lines. The filling can be the same.
Can a pop-up toaster make a sandwich?
No. The slots only take plain slices. Fillings like cheese or potato would fall in and burn. Toast the bread first and add the filling after, or use a griller or sandwich maker.
Which uses less electricity, a toaster or a griller?
Both use very little. An 800 W griller running for 5 minutes uses about 0.07 units of power. A toaster of similar wattage running for 3 minutes uses about 0.04 units.
How brown should toast be?
Golden, not dark. The UK Food Standards Agency says to aim for a golden yellow colour, or lighter, when toasting bread. Darker browning means more acrylamide.
