Kitchen Vastu Tips: Direction, Colour & Placement Guide

Kitchen Vastu tips help many Indian families plan their cooking space. Vastu Shastra is an old Indian system of design. It gives rules for which way a home and its kitchen should face. Many families follow these rules when they build or redo a kitchen. This guide covers kitchen direction, stove, chimney, sink, fridge, almirah and colours.

What Is Kitchen Vastu?

Vastu Shastra gives each direction a meaning. Each direction is linked to an element: fire, water, earth, air or space. The kitchen feeds the family. So Vastu treats it as one of the most important rooms in the home.

Some writers give these rules a practical reason. The Asian Paints Beautiful Homes Vastu guide says the southeast and northwest were preferred in the days of wood-fired stoves. Hot winds from the southwest could then not carry the fire into the house. This is a modern explanation, not a proven history. Today, many families follow Vastu out of tradition and faith.

Is there science behind it? Astronomer Jayant Narlikar says the harms and benefits that Vastu consultants market have "no logical connection to environment". His view is quoted in the Wikipedia article on Vastu shastra, from his 2009 chapter in a Cambridge University Press book. We found no peer-reviewed study showing that kitchen direction changes health or wealth.

Best Direction for Kitchen (According to Vastu)

Your kitchen may already face another way. Vastu practitioners suggest remedies like a new wall colour, moving the stove, or placing certain items in corners. These are belief-based ideas, not building rules.

Stove Placement: The Fire Element

In Vastu, the stove stands for Agni, the fire element. The southeast corner of the kitchen is believed to be the natural home of fire. Vastu practitioners advise:

• Place the stove in the southeast corner of the kitchen.
• The cook should face east while using the stove.
• Keep the stove away from the sink, since Vastu treats fire and water as opposites.
• Do not place the stove directly in front of the kitchen entrance.
• Keep the stove a little away from the wall. Follow your stove maker's manual for the gap to leave.

Practical note: Gas stoves need good ventilation, whatever the direction. Put safety before Vastu. The US EPA advises running a range hood that vents outdoors whenever you cook. Plan the gas pipe and the chimney duct before you fix the stove's spot.

Chimney Direction as per Vastu

Vastu guides do not all agree on chimney direction. The Asian Paints Vastu guide says you can choose the south zone for an electric chimney. It adds that the space above the stove should stay open or hold a chimney, not storage. The Go Digit kitchen Vastu guide says exhaust fans should go on the east wall.

Safety matters more than direction. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gives these steps for a range hood that vents outdoors:

• Turn it on every time you cook.
• Leave it on for 10 to 20 minutes after you finish cooking.
• Cook on the back burners when you can, so the hood catches more fumes.

Does your chimney not vent outside? Then the EPA says to open doors and windows when it is safe. Use kitchen or window exhaust fans to push the air out.

Sink & Water Placement

Vastu treats water as the opposite of fire. A sink in the north or northeast is believed to balance the stove in the southeast. Key Vastu advice:

• Kitchen sink in the north or northeast portion of the kitchen.
• Water purifier or filter in the northeast corner.
• Drinking water storage in the northeast.
• Keep the sink and stove on different walls or at least not directly adjacent.

Practical note: Your plumbing often decides where the sink goes. A northeast sink may not be possible. Some Vastu practitioners suggest a small water element in the northeast corner, like a small pot of water. This is a symbolic remedy.

Refrigerator, Almirah & Storage Placement

Vastu links the southwest to the earth element. Earth stands for stability, so Vastu ties this zone to storage. Common guidance:

• Refrigerator in the southwest, west, or south of the kitchen.
• Grain storage containers in the south or west cabinets.
• Heavy kitchen appliances in the southwest corner.
• Do not place the fridge in the northeast (this is reserved for the water element).

Practical note: A fridge needs space for air around it. Check your fridge manual for the gap it needs at the back and sides. Put the fridge where it fits well first. Then think about Vastu direction.

Almirah direction (अलमारी कौन सी दिशा में रखनी चाहिए): The UltraTech Vastu guide says an almirah goes in the southwest or west. Its doors should open toward the north or east. It says to avoid the northeast. In a kitchen, Vastu guides apply the same idea to tall storage. The Go Digit guide puts storage racks on the south or west wall.

Kitchen Vastu Colours

Whether or not you follow Vastu, light colours can make a small kitchen feel brighter. The Asian Paints guide also says to avoid dark colours like black, grey and blue. This is one area where Vastu and simple design agree.

Kitchen Vastu Don'ts

Vastu practitioners advise against these common kitchen mistakes:

• Kitchen under a bathroom: Believed to bring health issues. Practically, this also raises plumbing leak concerns.
• Kitchen above a bathroom: Same belief as above: the fire element should not sit above the water element.
• Toilet adjacent to kitchen: Both Vastu and hygiene agree on this one.
• Eating in the kitchen: Vastu recommends a separate dining area. This is less practical in smaller Indian homes.
• Broken or chipped utensils: Believed to attract negative energy. Practically, chipped surfaces are also harder to clean well.
• Storing medicines in the kitchen: Vastu considers mixing medicine energy with food energy inauspicious.

Some of these rules match good hygiene and safety. Others are only beliefs. Follow what works for your home.

Practical Tips for Modern Indian Kitchens

Here is how to balance Vastu beliefs with modern kitchen needs:

• Work triangle: Keep the stove, sink, and fridge close to each other. The US National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) guideline, as quoted by CRD Design Build, says each side of this triangle should be 4 to 9 feet (about 1.2 to 2.7 metres). All three sides together should be no more than 26 feet (about 7.9 metres). Good workflow matters more than direction for daily cooking.
• Ventilation: Install a chimney above the stove, whichever wall it faces. Vent it outdoors and run it while you cook, as the US EPA advises.
• Lighting: Ensure good task lighting over the cooking and cutting areas. If your kitchen faces away from sunlight, add under-cabinet LED strips.
• Storage: Keep everyday spices and utensils within arm's reach of the stove. Organise by frequency of use, not by Vastu direction.
• Safety first: Gas pipes, sockets near water and fire extinguishers should follow safety codes and your gas supplier's advice, not Vastu.

The best approach is simple. Follow Vastu where it does not get in the way. If a Vastu rule makes cooking awkward or unsafe, choose function and safety.
