InstaCuppa guide to kitchen pest control in monsoon India — bay leaves, cloves, neem and airtight jars

Every year, as soon as the first rains hit, your kitchen gets three unwanted guests: ants marching in lines, cockroaches hiding in dark corners, and houseflies landing on your food. This is not bad luck. This is monsoon in India. The air stays damp. Puddles form outside. A warm kitchen full of food looks like a good home to pests.

You do not need to spray chemical pesticides all over your kitchen. Most small monsoon pest problems can be handled at home. Kitchen pest control starts with sealed food, a clean bin and a few baits. Pantry herbs can help a little. They are not a cure. This guide covers ants, cockroaches, and flies. It shows what works, what is only folk wisdom, and how to stay safe.

Pest Control in Kitchen: What Actually Works

Quick Answer: Pest control in the kitchen works best in two steps. First, take away food, water and hiding places. Seal food, empty the bin each night, fix leaks and fill cracks. Second, use baits, not sprays. Use gel baits or boric acid for cockroaches and ant baits for ants. Herbs like bay leaf and clove have only lab evidence.

Proof from real homes: In a US study of 191 flats, Purdue University experts used gel bait, boric acid dust and sticky traps, with checks every month. After 12 months, cockroach catches in the traps fell by 99.6%. The number of flats with cockroaches fell by 74% (Wang and Bennett, 2009).

Experts at the University of California say baits give better control than sprays. They also say sprays alone will not solve a cockroach problem (UC IPM: Cockroaches).

What about kitchen fumigation? We do not advise any home fumigation or gas treatment. If you hire a pest control company, ask for baits and spot treatments instead of sprays all over the kitchen. UC IPM gives the same advice for ants (UC IPM: Ants).

Why Pests Invade Your Kitchen in Monsoon

Quick Answer: Monsoon gives kitchen pests what they need. Damp air, wet ground, warm rooms and easy food crumbs draw ants, cockroaches, and flies into Indian kitchens from June to September.

India's monsoon keeps the air damp for months in most cities. This is what happens to pests:

  • Ants — Their nests in the soil can flood. Ants often come indoors to escape floods and to find food and water. Kitchen counters and pantry shelves are easy targets.
  • Cockroaches — They like warm, dark, damp places. A German cockroach egg case holds about 30 young, and a female can make a new one every few weeks (UC IPM).
  • Houseflies — They lay eggs in garbage, rotting fruit and dung, not in clean water. In warm weather, a fly can grow from egg to adult in about 7 days. More flies outside means more flies inside your kitchen.

We looked for an Indian study that measures how much cockroach numbers rise in the monsoon. We could not find one, so we give no number here. What is clear is simple. Pests need food, water and shelter. The monsoon gives them more of all three.

The good news: All three pests need the same things — food, water and a place to hide. Take those away and your kitchen stops being useful to them.

How to Get Rid of Ants in the Kitchen (Natural Methods)

Quick Answer: To remove ants from your kitchen, wipe the ant trail with soapy water. Seal the gap they come through. Store sugar and sweets in sealed jars and fix leaks near the sink. If ants keep coming, put an ant bait near the trail. Baits can take 5 to 10 days to work.

Ants use scent trails to navigate. One ant finds your sugar bowl. It leaves a scent trail. Soon, a long line of ants follows the same path. The trick is to break the trail and remove the food source.

5 Natural Remedies That Work for Ants

1. Cinnamon Powder at Entry Points
Draw a thin line of cinnamon powder across doorways, windowsills, and any visible ant entry points. Cinnamon oil kept ants away in a 2022 study from Spain, even when it was mixed into plastic pipes (de Pedro and Sanchez, 2022). A line of powder is much weaker. It is not a wall, and rain or wiping removes it. Replace every 2 to 3 days or after rain.

2. Cloves Near Food Storage
Place 4 to 5 whole cloves in corners of your pantry shelf and near the sugar dabba. In a lab test, clove powder drove away 99% of fire ants within 3 hours (Kafle and Shih, 2013). That was a lab dish, not a kitchen shelf. Whole cloves give off far less, so treat them as a mild helper. No mess, and little smell for people.

3. White Vinegar Wipe-Down
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water. Wipe your kitchen counters, stovetop area, and floor near the sink every evening with this mix. Wiping removes the ant scent trail. UC IPM suggests a sponge and soapy water. A vinegar mix is a fine wipe too, and it also cleans grease.

4. Turmeric Powder at Base of Cabinets
Many Indian homes use turmeric this way. We found no good study that tests it, so think of it as a folk remedy. If you try it, sprinkle a thin line at the base of kitchen cabinets and along the skirting board.

5. Mint Leaves Near Sink
Keep 5 to 6 fresh mint leaves near the kitchen sink drain. Some people find the smell keeps ants off, but proof is weak. Replace every 3 to 4 days. Peppermint oil on cotton balls is stronger — 2 drops each near entry points.

Key Fact: An ant trail can hold thousands of ants. When one scout finds food, others follow its scent trail. So removing the food works better than killing the ants you see. Ant baits work because workers carry the bait home, where it can kill the whole colony, queens too (UC IPM).

Common Mistakes That Make Ants Worse

  • Leaving sugar, honey, or jaggery in open bowls or dabbas without lids
  • Not wiping the underside of the kitchen counter — sticky syrup residue attracts ants
  • Leaving wet dishcloths on the counter overnight
  • Not sealing cracks in the kitchen wall near the floor — ants enter through very small gaps

How to Keep Cockroaches Out of Your Kitchen

Quick Answer: To keep cockroaches out of your kitchen, seal food, empty the bin each night, fix leaks and clean behind the fridge. Seal gaps around pipes with putty. Then place gel baits or boric acid in cracks where they hide. Baits work better than sprays. Bay leaf and camphor may help a little, but no study shows they clear a kitchen.

Cockroaches are India's most hated monsoon pest. They are fast, they breed quickly, and they can carry germs like Salmonella, E. coli, and Staphylococcus aureus on their legs. When they walk across your cutting board or dal vessel, they can leave germs behind (UC IPM).

In India, two types dominate: the German cockroach (small, tan-colored, lives in cracks near heat) and the American cockroach (large, reddish-brown, lives in drains and pipes). Both hate the same natural remedies.

6 Natural Remedies for Cockroaches

1. Bay Leaves (Tej Patta) in Cabinets
Bay leaf is the most popular natural cockroach remedy in India. The science is thin. In a 2010 lab test, 1,8-cineole, an oil found in bay leaves, was the most toxic of 12 plant oils to adult German cockroaches (Phillips and Appel, 2010). But that was pure oil vapour in a closed jar, not a few dry leaves in a cabinet. We found no study of bay leaves in a real kitchen. If you use them, place 2 to 3 dried bay leaves in each kitchen cabinet, inside the pantry, and behind the microwave. Replace monthly.

2. Camphor (Kapur) Tablets Near Drains
Cockroaches enter through kitchen drains. Many homes place 1 to 2 camphor tablets near the drain pipe under the sink. Camphor smells strong, but we found no study that shows it keeps cockroaches out of drains. Camphor is also poisonous if a child swallows it. Even small amounts can be dangerous (Kumar and others, PGIMER, 2019). Keep tablets out of reach, or skip them if you have small children. A drain cover and a dry sink do more.

3. Boric Acid + Sugar Bait (Keep Away From Children)
Mix 1 part boric acid powder with 1 part powdered sugar. Place small amounts in bottle caps and tuck behind the fridge, under the sink, and inside cabinet corners far from children's reach. Cockroaches eat the sugar. The boric acid kills them. It may take 7 days or longer to see fewer cockroaches (UC IPM). Boric acid is low in toxicity, but children may be more sensitive than adults, so keep it away from children, pets and food (NPIC).

4. Neem Oil Spray
Mix 10 drops of neem oil with 500ml water and a few drops of dish soap. Spray in dark corners, behind the stove, and along the base of cabinets. Neem compounds harm insects in lab tests. A few drops in water is a weak dose, so results vary. Spray every 3 to 4 days.

5. Essential Oil Spray (Lavender + Peppermint)
Mix 10 drops lavender oil and 10 drops peppermint oil in 200ml water. Spray along the bottom of cabinets and the gap between the countertop and wall. Plant oils kill cockroaches in lab tests. But in the 2010 test, no plant oil stopped egg cases from hatching, so you would need to repeat it. Expect a mild effect.

6. Keep It Dry Behind the Fridge
The space behind your refrigerator is warm and often humid — ideal for cockroaches to breed. Our advice: in the monsoon, pull the fridge out every 2 weeks, clean behind it, and check that no water drips from the drip tray. Place 2 bay leaves behind the fridge while you're there.

Home food business note: If you run a tiffin, catering or baking business from home, pest control is part of food safety. It is not a choice. Check with FSSAI which hygiene rules apply to your licence or registration.

The One Cockroach Prevention Rule That Works Best

Empty your kitchen dustbin every night before sleeping. A bin with a tight lid takes away a big food source. UC IPM advises keeping trash in bins with tight lids. Cockroaches hide by day and come out at night to feed. Remove food and water by bedtime and your kitchen becomes useless to them.

How to Stop Houseflies from Getting Into Your Food

Quick Answer: To keep houseflies away from your kitchen during monsoon, use a mesh screen on windows, cover all food right after cooking, empty garbage every night, and place sticky traps near windows. Never leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight.

Houseflies do not just annoy you — they are a serious health risk. House flies feed on garbage and dung. So they can pick up germs that make people sick and carry them to your food (UC IPM: Flies). A fly that lands on food can leave those germs behind.

Fly numbers rise when there is more rotting waste near the home. A female house fly lays several batches of about 100 to 150 eggs. She lays them in garbage, rotting fruit and vegetables, or dung. Flies do not breed in clean standing water. That is mosquitoes.

7 Ways to Keep Flies Out of Your Kitchen

1. Cloves + Lemon (The Old-School Indian Method)
Cut a lemon in half. Push 6 to 8 whole cloves into the flesh of each half. Place near the dining table and kitchen counter. Many homes swear by it. We found no study on this exact trick, so use it as a helper, not a fix. Replace every 3 to 4 days.

2. Basil (Tulsi) Plant on the Windowsill
A living tulsi plant near the kitchen window is a popular fly remedy in India. Tulsi leaves have oils like linalool and eugenol. But a plant on a sill gives off very little. We found no study that shows it keeps flies out of a kitchen. Grow it because you like it.

3. Cover Food Immediately After Cooking
Food left uncovered for even 5 minutes during monsoon will attract flies. Use a mesh food cover or plate lid. This is the simplest rule and the most often broken.

4. Camphor Burning (Kapur Diffuser)
Many homes burn a small piece of camphor near the kitchen door in the morning and evening. We found no study that shows it keeps flies out of a kitchen. A flame near a gas stove is a fire risk. Camphor is also poisonous if swallowed, so keep it away from children.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar Trap
Pour 100ml of apple cider vinegar into a glass. Add a drop of dish soap. Cover with cling wrap and poke small holes. Flies are attracted to the vinegar smell, enter through the holes, and cannot get out. Place near the dustbin or compost area. Empty daily.

6. Keep the Sink Dry at Night
A wet sink with food particles is the top overnight fly attractant. Rinse the sink with hot water from your electric kettle every night. Hot water clears food bits, and a dry sink gives flies nothing to feed on.

7. Install Mesh Screens on Windows
For homes that keep windows open during rain, a basic mesh screen (mosquito jali) is the physical barrier that stops most flying insects. UC IPM says well-fitted screens keep flies out. This is especially important for kitchen windows that face the garden or outside drain.

Natural Pest Repellent Chart: Which Herb Repels Which Pest

Quick Answer: This chart shows how Indian homes use each herb. Proof for all of them is weak. Most tests are lab studies of pure oils, not kitchens. Camphor is not safe around small children. Use these as helpers on top of sealed food, a clean bin and baits.
Natural Remedy Repels How to Use Replace Every
Bay Leaves (Tej Patta) Cockroaches, moths 2 to 3 leaves in each cabinet, inside pantry Monthly
Cinnamon (Dalchini) Ants Powder line at entry points Every 2 to 3 days
Cloves (Laung) Ants, flies Near sugar dabba; push into lemon halves for flies 2 to 3 weeks
Camphor (Kapur) Cockroaches, flies, mosquitoes Tablets near drains (keep away from children and flames) 2 weeks
Neem Oil Cockroaches, ants, flies Diluted spray in dark corners and cabinet bases Every 3 to 4 days
Tulsi / Basil Flies, mosquitoes Live plant on windowsill Never (living plant)
Turmeric (Haldi) Ants Powder line at cabinet base Weekly
Peppermint Oil Ants, cockroaches Cotton balls near entry points 5 to 7 days

Cost check: Most of these items are already in an Indian kitchen, so the cost is small. Professional pest control prices vary by city and home size. Get two or three quotes before you book.

The Best Prevention: Proper Food Storage

Quick Answer: The most effective pest control is removing access to food. Seal all grains, flours, snacks, and sugar in airtight containers. Keep the pantry dry. Empty the dustbin every night. If pests cannot find food in your kitchen, they are much less likely to stay.

Natural repellents are one half of the solution. The other half is starving the pests out. If your food is sealed and your dustbin is emptied every night, ants, cockroaches, and flies have no reason to come into your kitchen.

Food Storage Rules for Monsoon Pest Control

  • Seal all grains, dal, and atta in airtight containers — Loose lids and open packets let pests reach food. UC IPM advises clean, sealed containers, not plastic bags or open packets.
  • Do not leave sugar, honey, or jaggery in open dabbas — These are the top ant attractants. Transfer to a sealed glass jar with a tight lid.
  • Store bread in an airtight container or the fridge — Open bread packets draw flies and ants.
  • Keep fruits in the fridge or a mesh fruit basket — Overripe fruit is a top fly magnet. Check daily and discard damaged pieces.
  • Empty the dustbin before 10 PM every night — An empty, covered dustbin removes the overnight food source that cockroaches and flies depend on.

When Should You Call Pest Control?

Quick Answer: Our advice: call professional pest control if you see cockroaches in the daytime, find cockroach egg capsules behind appliances, have an ant trail that does not respond to natural remedies after 5 days, or see signs of rodent entry such as gnaw marks or droppings. Natural remedies work for normal monsoon pest activity but not for established infestations.

Natural remedies work for prevention and early-stage pest activity. These signs mean the problem is beyond home remedies:

  • Cockroaches visible in daytime — Cockroaches hide by day and feed at night. We treat daytime sightings as a sign there may be too many to hide. Call pest control.
  • Egg capsules (oothecae) found behind appliances — A German cockroach egg case is light brown, about 6 mm long, and holds about 30 young. An American cockroach egg case is about 9 mm long and holds about 12 (UC IPM). Finding several means they are breeding in your kitchen. Gel baits are the usual treatment.
  • Ant nest inside the wall — If ants are actually living inside your kitchen wall (ant dust near holes, sawdust-like material), this is a carpenter ant colony. It needs professional treatment.
  • Rodent signs — Chewed food packaging, droppings, gnaw marks on wood or wire. This is a direct food safety risk and beyond the scope of home remedies.

Many pest control services in India offer a monsoon package (cockroach gel + ant treatment + fly control). Prices vary, so compare quotes. Ask for gel baits and spot treatments, not sprays all over the kitchen. If you had a bad year before, one visit in May, before the rains, may be worth it.

Kitchen Pest Control: Frequently Asked Questions

Which natural ingredient is most effective against cockroaches in the kitchen?

No kitchen herb has strong proof. Bay leaf (tej patta) is the most popular choice. An oil in it, 1,8-cineole, killed German cockroaches in a lab test. But dry leaves in a cabinet give off far less, and no study we found tests them in a kitchen. For real control, use gel baits or boric acid in cracks, away from food, children and pets.

How do I stop ants from entering my kitchen in monsoon?

Store all sweet items — sugar, jaggery, honey, mithai — in vacuum-sealed or airtight glass jars. Wipe counters with diluted white vinegar every evening to erase scent trails. Seal the gap they use. If ants keep coming, place an ant bait near the trail. If you keep these habits throughout June to September, ant activity will be minimal even if it does not stop completely.

Are chemical pesticide sprays safe to use in the kitchen?

Commercial pesticide sprays are not recommended for direct use on kitchen surfaces, countertops, or inside food cabinets. The residue can contaminate food and is risky for children and pets. If you need chemical treatment, use cockroach gel baits — like Maxforce or Bayer Gel — which are placed in cracks and behind appliances away from food surfaces. UC IPM says baits give better control than sprays.

Can a clean kitchen fully prevent monsoon pests?

A clean kitchen significantly reduces pest activity but cannot guarantee zero pests during heavy monsoon. Pests also enter because of external factors — flooded nests, neighbours' infestations, shared walls in apartments. The best results come from combining cleanliness, natural repellents, airtight food storage, and a sealed dustbin. In apartment buildings, pest activity partly depends on the building's overall hygiene which is outside your control.

How often should I clean my kitchen during monsoon for pest prevention?

Our advice: during monsoon, clean behind the refrigerator and under the stove every 2 weeks instead of monthly. Wipe cabinet interiors every 10 to 12 days. Clean the area under the kitchen sink weekly — this is the most common cockroach breeding zone. A full kitchen deep clean at the start of June sets the right baseline for the whole season.

Does camphor repel ants?

Only weak proof exists. In a 2015 lab study, camphor oil strongly repelled fire ants, and its vapour killed many. That was strong oil in a closed test, not a camphor tablet in a kitchen. Camphor is also poisonous if a child swallows it. Sealed food, wiping the trail and ant baits work better.

P.S. — Two upgrades that make a real difference for monsoon pest control: A glass vacuum canister keeps sweet food sealed away from ants and cockroaches (our 1200 ml airtight jar was sold out on 27 September 2026). A touchless sensor dustbin keeps your garbage sealed so cockroaches cannot feed overnight. Both are sold on instacuppastore.com.
