What Is an Instant Geyser?

An instant geyser is a small electric water heater with a strong element that heats a little water fast. Crompton lists 3,000 or 4,500 watts for its instant models. A storage geyser is an electric water heater with an insulated tank and a thermostat. For a bathroom the tank is often 10 to 25 litres, and the element is often 2,000 watts (Crompton). BEE star labels cover storage models from 6 to 200 litres.

So what is the real difference? It is the tank size and the power. A small tank heats up fast. Heat maths shows it: a 3,000 watt element warms 3 litres of water by 25 °C in about 1 minute 45 seconds. How Does Each Geyser Actually Work?

A tankless instant water heater warms water as it flows through, so it gives hot water almost at once and stores none. A small-tank instant model holds 1 to 5 litres and heats it in a few minutes. A storage water heater fills an insulated tank, heats it with a thermostat-controlled element, and keeps it warm until you open the tap. This single difference drives every other gap between them.

Think of it like tea. An instant geyser is like boiling one cup the moment you want it. A storage geyser is like keeping a flask of hot water ready all day. The flask is handy when many people want chai one after another. Boiling one cup at a time is smarter when only you drink it.

Heating speed: Crompton says its instant heaters heat water in minutes, while its storage heaters need up to 10 minutes. Tankless models give near-instant hot water (Haier India, 2024).

Because a storage geyser holds hot water for hours, some heat slowly leaks out of the tank. The geyser then switches on again to top it up. This is called standing loss, and it is the quiet reason a storage geyser left on all day wastes units. A tankless instant geyser has no tank, so it has zero standing loss. It only spends power while water is running. A 1 to 5 litre instant tank loses far less than a big tank, because BEE allows a small tank less standing loss.

Here is the catch most buyers miss. An instant geyser draws more power at once. Most instant units are rated around 3 kW, while most storage geysers run near 2 kW. So an instant geyser pulls a stronger current, but only for a short burst.

For a home that uses hot water for only 30 to 40 minutes a day, an instant geyser tends to be cheaper to run. Once three or more people need baths, a storage geyser usually wins, because the heated tank gets emptied instead of wasted. One more thing about flow. An instant geyser gives a thin stream of hot water, so it cannot fill a bathtub quickly.

Flow rate: Heat maths shows the limit. It takes about 4.18 kJ to warm 1 kg of water by 1 °C (Engineering ToolBox). So a 3,000 W heater can warm only about 1.7 litres a minute by 25 °C. Which Geyser Is Best: Instant or Storage?

An instant geyser is best if you are one or two people, use a bucket bath, want it over a kitchen sink, or have little wall space. A storage geyser is best if you have a family of three or more, like showers, face cold winters, or want a full tank ready in the morning. Match the type to your daily routine, not to the price tag alone.

Use this quick checklist before you pay:

1. Count your users. One or two people lean instant. Three or more lean storage.
2. Check your bath style. Bucket bath suits instant. Shower or bathtub needs storage.
3. Look at your wiring. Instant geysers pull around 3 kW, so older wiring may need an upgrade (Haier India). At India's 230 V mains, 3,000 W draws about 13 amps (3,000 ÷ 230), and 4,500 W about 20 amps. Ask an electrician to check the wire, socket and MCB first.
4. Measure your wall. Tight bathroom corner suits a compact instant unit. A tank needs clear space.
5. Read the rating label. On a storage geyser, pick a high BEE star rating for lower standing loss. On any geyser, check the ISI mark for safety before you buy.

About that last point: the BEE star label covers storage geysers from 6 to 200 litres. The stars grade standing loss, which is the power a full tank uses in 24 hours when no water is drawn (BEE Schedule 10). BEE made the label mandatory for storage geysers from 1 July 2015. Instant geysers are not in that schedule, so do not expect a star label on one. For safety, a government order from March 2024 (S.O. 1253(E)) asks for the BIS Standard Mark (ISI) on both instant and storage electric water heaters. So check the star rating on a storage geyser and the ISI mark on any geyser, not just the price. Can One Geyser Serve the Whole House?

Yes, but only a storage geyser, and only if hot-water pipes run to each tap. Crompton says a storage water heater can give hot water to a whole house with more than one bathroom, even at the same time. An instant geyser has only one outlet, so it serves one tap (Crompton). Its flow is also too low for two taps at once (Haier India).
