I get asked the same question every week: what exactly comes in the box, and how do you actually use the InstaCuppa Portable Soda Maker? Descriptions and bullet points only go so far. So I recorded a full unboxing and walkthrough video to show you everything - from opening the package to pouring your first glass of sparkling water.

This article is the written companion to that video. If you prefer watching, the full video is embedded below. If you prefer reading, I have covered every detail in the sections that follow - what is included, the key features, step-by-step usage instructions, and practical tips from daily use.

Whether you are considering buying one or have just received yours and want to set it up correctly, this guide has you covered.

What Should You Know About What's in the Box?

When you open the InstaCuppa Portable Soda Maker package, here is exactly what you will find inside: 1x Soda Maker Bottle - The main 1-litre bottle. This is the bottle you fill with water and carbonate directly. It weighs roughly 500g empty.

When you open the InstaCuppa Portable Soda Maker package, here is exactly what you will find inside:

  • 1x Soda Maker Bottle - The main 1-litre bottle. This is the bottle you fill with water and carbonate directly. It weighs roughly 500g empty.
  • 1x Soda Maker Lid (with capsule mechanism) - This is the lid that holds the CO2 capsule and punctures it when you twist. This is the piece that does the actual carbonation work.
  • 1x Normal Bottle Cap - A standard screw-on cap for when you want to use the bottle as a regular water bottle, without the soda maker mechanism.
  • 10x CO2 Capsules - Each capsule carbonates up to 1 litre of water. Ten capsules means you get 10 litres of sparkling water to test the product before you need to order more.

That is everything. No batteries, no charging cables, no electricity required. The dual-lid design is a detail most people overlook - you get a soda maker when you need fizz, and a normal water bottle when you do not.

What Features Should You Look For?

Portable at 500g The entire unit - bottle plus soda maker lid - weighs about 500g when empty. That is lighter than most stainless steel water bottles. It fits in a backpack side pocket, a laptop bag, or a car cupholder. I have taken it to the office, on road trips, and to outdoor events without any inconvenience.

Dual Cap Design

This is one of the more practical design choices. The soda maker lid with the capsule mechanism is one piece. The normal bottle cap is a separate piece. You swap between them depending on whether you want sparkling water or regular water. It means you are not carrying a bulky gadget when you just want a water bottle.

30-Second Carbonation

From inserting the capsule to pouring your first glass, the entire process takes about 30 seconds. The actual carbonation - from the moment CO2 enters the water to when you can open the lid - is roughly 15 seconds. There is no waiting, no prep, and no cleanup.

No Electricity Required

The soda maker runs entirely on CO2 capsules. There is no battery, no charging port, no power cable. This is what makes it genuinely portable, not just "small enough to move around the kitchen." You can use it in places where there is no power outlet at all.

Assembled in India

The InstaCuppa Portable Soda Maker is assembled in India. I mention this because I get asked about it regularly, and it matters to a growing number of buyers.

How to Use: Step-by-Step

If you have just unboxed your soda maker, follow these steps for your first use. The video above shows each step visually, but here is the written version for reference.

  1. Fill the bottle with cold water.

Fill up to the marked line on the bottle. Use cold water from the fridge - ideally between 4°C and 8°C. Cold water absorbs CO2 significantly better than room temperature water. If you use warm water, you will get weak, flat-tasting fizz.

  2. Insert a CO2 capsule into the soda maker lid.

Take one capsule from the box and drop it into the capsule holder inside the soda maker lid. It sits in a small chamber designed to hold it in place. Each capsule is single-use and carbonates up to 1 litre.

  3. Twist the soda maker lid onto the bottle.

Screw the lid onto the bottle and twist firmly. When you twist past the resistance point, the mechanism punctures the capsule and releases CO2 into the water. You will hear a clear hissing sound - that is the gas dissolving into the water.

  4. Wait about 15 seconds.

Let the CO2 fully dissolve. You can gently swirl the bottle (do not shake it), but honestly, just waiting 15 seconds works fine. The water will look slightly cloudy as the gas dissolves - this is normal.

  5. Slowly release the pressure.

Open the lid gradually, not in one quick twist. If you open it too fast, the sudden pressure release causes the water to foam up and overflow - similar to opening a shaken bottle of soda. Go slow, let the excess gas escape, then open fully.

  6. Add your flavouring (after carbonation, not before).

Once the water is carbonated and the lid is off, add whatever you like - lemon juice, Jaljeera powder, fruit syrup, a splash of Rooh Afza. Always add flavouring after carbonation. Adding anything to the water before carbonation causes excessive foaming and can force liquid out of the bottle.

That is the complete process. Once you have done it twice, it becomes second nature.

What Tips Should You Know?

I have been using this soda maker daily for months now. Here are the things I wish someone had told me on day one. Cold water is not optional - it is essential I cannot stress this enough. Room temperature water gives you a fraction of the fizz that cold water does.

I have been using this soda maker daily for months now. Here are the things I wish someone had told me on day one.

Cold water is not optional - it is essential

I cannot stress this enough. Room temperature water gives you a fraction of the fizz that cold water does. The science is straightforward: cold water holds more dissolved CO2 than warm water. If your first attempt felt underwhelming, check the water temperature before blaming the product. Keep a filled bottle in the fridge so you always have cold water ready.

Always add flavour after carbonation

I made this mistake exactly once. I added lemon juice before inserting the capsule. The moment the CO2 hit the flavoured water, it foamed up violently and leaked out of the lid. The rule is simple: carbonate plain water first, then add your flavouring. This applies to every soda maker on the market, not just this one. If you want to understand why, I have explained the full process in my guide on how to make soda at home.

Do not shake the bottle after carbonation

Swirling gently is fine. Shaking is not. Shaking a freshly carbonated bottle creates the same result as shaking a can of Pepsi - when you open it, you get a fountain. If you want to mix in flavouring, use a spoon or stir stick after opening the lid.

The normal cap is more useful than you think

I initially ignored the regular bottle cap. But it turns out I use the bottle as a normal water bottle more often than I expected - at the gym, at my desk, on short walks. The dual cap system means you do not need a separate water bottle and a separate soda maker. It is one product that does both.

Running cost context

Each capsule carbonates 1 litre. If you buy the 30-pack, that is about Rs 33 per litre of sparkling water. For context, a 750ml bottle of store-bought sparkling water costs Rs 50 - 100. I have written a detailed breakdown of the running cost per glass if you want the full numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the InstaCuppa Portable Soda Maker box?

The box contains 4 items: one soda maker bottle, one soda maker lid (with the CO2 capsule mechanism), one normal bottle cap for regular use, and 10 CO2 capsules. No batteries or electricity needed - everything you need to start making sparkling water is in the box.

Is the InstaCuppa Soda Maker safe to use?

Yes. The bottle is designed to handle the pressure from CO2 carbonation. The capsule mechanism is enclosed within the lid, so there is no exposed gas or sharp edges during use. The food-grade CO2 capsules are the same type used in commercial soda siphons worldwide. Follow the instructions - fill only with cold water, do not overfill past the marked line, and open the lid slowly after carbonation.

How many CO2 capsules are included, and where do I buy more?

10 capsules are included in the box. Each capsule carbonates up to 1 litre of water, so you get 10 litres to start with. Additional capsules are available on instacuppastore.com - the 30-pack works out to about Rs 33 per capsule.

Can I use hot water or warm water with the soda maker?

No. Use only cold water, ideally between 4°C and 8°C (straight from the fridge). Warm or hot water does not absorb CO2 effectively, resulting in weak carbonation. More importantly, hot water under pressure can be dangerous. Always use cold water for both safety and the best fizz.
