How to Clean a Waffle Maker: Easy Steps, Stuck Batter and What Never to Use

By Saran Reddy, Founder - InstaCuppa | April 22, 2026 | 7 min read | Last updated: October 8, 2026

Here is how to clean a waffle maker in five minutes. Unplug it, let it cool, brush out the crumbs, and wipe the plates with a damp, soapy cloth. Never dip it in water.

We checked real user manuals from waffle maker brands for this guide. Some popular "rules" turned out to be wrong. Mild soap is fine, and the best fix for burnt batter is plain cooking oil.

How Do You Clean a Waffle Maker?

Quick answer: Unplug it and let it cool. Brush crumbs out of the grooves. Wipe the plates with a damp, soapy cloth, then wipe again with a clean, damp cloth. Dry it fully before you store it.

  1. Unplug and let it cool. Switch off and unplug the waffle maker. Let it cool before you clean it, so you do not burn your fingers.
  2. Brush out the crumbs. Use a soft brush to sweep crumbs out of the grooves on both plates. A soft toothbrush or nylon brush works well.
  3. Wipe with a damp, soapy cloth. Wipe both plates and the outside with a cloth that is damp, not dripping, with a drop of dish soap.
  4. Wipe again with a clean, damp cloth. Rinse the cloth well and wipe the plates again to lift off any soap.
  5. Dry it fully. Dry the plates and body with a dry cloth. Store it only when it is completely dry.

These steps work for a mini waffle maker, a big Belgian model and a 3-in-1 sandwich press. Only the plate size changes. The key rule stays the same: water goes on the cloth, never into the machine.

Do it after every batch. The Dash mini waffle maker manual says to clean it after each use to stop food and oil from building up.

What Do Waffle Maker Manuals Actually Say?

Quick answer: Brand manuals agree on four things: never put the machine in water, wipe with a damp soapy cloth, skip abrasive cleaners, and do not use metal tools on the plates.

Most cleaning tips online are copied from other blogs. So we went to the source and read the manuals. Here is what two popular brands tell their own buyers.

Topic Dash Mini Waffle Maker manual Hamilton Beach waffle maker manual
Put it in water? No. Do not submerge it or hold it under running water No. Do not immerse the cord, plug or base
Dishwasher? No. It is not dishwasher safe Not listed as dishwasher safe
How to wipe Damp, soapy cloth, then rinse the cloth and wipe again Damp, soapy cloth, then rinse the cloth and wipe again
Scrubbers Never use abrasive cleaning agents No steel wool, scouring pads or abrasive cleansers
Tools No metal utensils on the cooking surface Plastic or wooden tools only; metal damages the coating
Burnt-on food Oil soak for 5 to 10 minutes, then a soft brush Scrub with a nylon brush

Both manuals are from US brands, but the advice fits any non-stick waffle maker sold in India. When in doubt, follow the manual that came in your own box.

How Do You Get Burnt or Stuck Batter Off a Waffle Maker?

Quick answer: Let it cool, pour a little cooking oil on the burnt bits, wait 5 to 10 minutes, then scrub with a soft brush and wipe clean. For tough spots, leave the oil for a few hours.

This is the method in the Dash manual. The oil softens the cooked-on batter, so it lifts off without scraping. You do not need any special cleaner.

  1. Cool it. Unplug and let the plates cool fully.
  2. Oil it. Pour a few drops of cooking oil on the dark, crusty spots.
  3. Wait. Leave it for 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Brush. Scrub gently with a soft toothbrush or nylon brush.
  5. Wipe. Use a damp, soapy cloth, then a clean damp cloth.
  6. Repeat if needed. For old build-up, leave the oil on for a few hours and try again.

Sugar is the usual culprit. Jaggery, chocolate and honey batters burn onto the plates faster than plain ones. So does melted cheese from chaffles.

Good to know: If your waffles have started to stick, burnt build-up is often the cause. The Dash manual calls this build-up normal, especially with sugary batters. An oil soak usually fixes it. For other causes, see why waffles stick to your waffle maker.

Can You Use Soap to Clean a Waffle Maker?

Quick answer: Yes. A cloth with a little mild dish soap is what the manuals tell you to use. Wipe the plates with it, then wipe again with a clean, damp cloth so no soap is left behind.

Many blogs say soap will strip the non-stick coating. The manuals do not agree. Both Dash and Hamilton Beach tell you to use a damp, soapy cloth.

Singapore's food safety agency gives the same advice for non-stick pans: a soft sponge and warm, soapy water. What damages the coating is rough scrubbing, not mild soap.

Should You Use Cooking Spray or Oil on a Waffle Maker?

Quick answer: Brush on a thin coat of plain oil. Some manuals suggest cooking spray for sweet batters, but sprays with lecithin can leave a sticky film that builds up over time.

The manuals do not all agree here. The Hamilton Beach manual suggests cooking spray for dessert waffles and very sweet batters.

But many sprays are not just oil. America's Test Kitchen explains that they often contain lecithin. Lecithin can leave a sticky film that sticks to non-stick coatings and builds up with each use.

The simple fix is a silicone brush and a few drops of oil. You get the same easy release with no gummy layer. Choose a spray without lecithin if you still prefer to spray.

What Should You Never Use to Clean a Waffle Maker?

Quick answer: Never use a tap, sink or dishwasher on the machine. Skip steel wool, scouring pads, harsh powders, knives, forks and metal spatulas.

Never do this Why
Dip it in water or hold it under a tap It has wiring inside; both manuals warn against it
Put it in the dishwasher The Dash manual says it is not dishwasher safe
Scrub with steel wool or a scouring pad Scratches and wears the non-stick coating
Use scouring powder or harsh cleaners Abrasive cleaners can damage the cooking surface
Lift waffles with a fork, knife or steel palta Metal scratches the coating; use wood, silicone or plastic
Clean it while it is still hot Risk of burns; let it cool first

Not sure which palta is safe? Our spatula guide compares silicone, wooden, nylon and steel. The same rules apply to cleaning a non-stick pan.

How Do You Clean a New Waffle Maker Before First Use?

Quick answer: Before the first batch, wipe both plates with a damp, soapy cloth. Rinse the cloth, wipe again, and dry. This removes dust from the factory and the box.

That is what the Hamilton Beach manual says to do before first use. It takes a minute.

A new machine may give off a light smell the first time it heats up. Keep a window open and make your first waffle once the smell fades.

Mini, Belgian and Removable-Plate Models: What Changes?

Quick answer: Fixed-plate models, like most mini waffle makers, are wiped clean in place. Models with removable plates let you take the plates out and wash them, but only as the manual allows.

Mini waffle makers. The plates are small and fixed, so cleaning is quick.

The InstaCuppa Mini Waffle Maker has a fixed non-stick plate. Wipe it in place using the five steps above.

Belgian waffle makers. The grooves are deeper, so crumbs hide well.

Spend more time with the brush. The oil soak works the same way.

Removable plates. Some sandwich makers, like the Philips 5000 Series, come with removable non-stick waffle plates.

Unclip them once cool and wash them as the manual says. The body still gets only a damp cloth.

Our guide on how to clean a sandwich maker covers fixed and removable plates in more detail.

Is It Safe to Preheat a Non-Stick Waffle Maker?

Quick answer: Yes, when you follow the manual. Waffle makers are built to preheat with the lid closed until the ready light comes on. Just do not leave it switched on and empty for a long time.

The Hamilton Beach manual tells you to preheat with the cover closed until the light turns on. That is normal use.

Trouble starts with real overheating. Singapore's Food Agency says PTFE non-stick coatings can start to give off fumes above 260 °C. Above 350 °C, the coating begins to break down.

The US National Capital Poison Center adds that scratched non-stick surfaces can also release fumes.

So check the plates now and then. Replace the machine if the coating is peeling or flaking.

How Do You Clean the Outside, Hinge and Cord?

Quick answer: Wipe the outside, handle and hinge with a damp, soapy cloth, then a clean damp cloth. Never spray water or cleaner straight onto the machine.

Batter often drips down the hinge and the sides. Wipe it off while it is still soft. Use a dry toothbrush on the hinge gap.

Keep the plug and cord dry at all times. Wrap the cord loosely when you store it, and keep the machine somewhere dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wash a waffle maker in water?

No. Never put a waffle maker under a tap, in a sink or in a dishwasher. It has wiring inside. Wipe the plates with a damp cloth instead. Only removable plates can be washed, and only if the manual says so.

Can I use dish soap on a waffle maker?

Yes, a little. Dash and Hamilton Beach both tell you to wipe the plates with a damp, soapy cloth. Then rinse the cloth and wipe again to lift the soap. What harms the coating is scrubbing with steel wool or harsh powders, not mild soap.

How do I get burnt batter off my waffle maker?

Let it cool. Pour a little cooking oil on the burnt spots and leave it for 5 to 10 minutes. Then scrub gently with a soft brush and wipe with a damp cloth. For very stubborn spots, leave the oil for a few hours and repeat.

Should I clean my waffle maker after every use?

Yes. A quick wipe after each batch stops oil and batter from building up in the grooves. That build-up is what makes waffles start to stick.

Is cooking spray bad for a waffle maker?

It depends on the spray. Some manuals suggest a light spray for sweet batters. But many sprays contain lecithin, which can leave a sticky film over time. Brushing on a thin coat of plain oil avoids the problem.

How do I clean a new waffle maker before first use?

Wipe both plates with a damp, soapy cloth. Rinse the cloth and wipe again, then dry. Some makers also suggest a light coat of oil before the first batch.

Can I use the waffle maker if the coating is scratched?

Check it closely. Small marks are common, but peeling or flaking coating is a sign to replace it. US poison experts note that scratched non-stick surfaces can give off fumes when heated.
