What Is a Gravity Water Filter, and Who Should Buy One?
A gravity water filter for home is a two-tank purifier with no plug. You pour water into the top tank. It drips through a cartridge into the bottom tank. The cartridge traps mud, bacteria and cysts on the way down. No power, no plumbing, no wasted water.
It suits homes on municipal or well water that is low in salts. It suits hostels, villages and any home with long power cuts. It also suits renters who cannot drill a wall.
It does not suit salty or hard borewell water. No gravity unit removes dissolved salts. For that you need RO. More on the test below.

How Does a Gravity Water Filter Work Without Power?
Water in the top tank pushes down under its own weight. That small push is enough to force it through a fine cartridge. The cartridge is the whole purifier. Three kinds are sold in India: ceramic candle, hollow-fibre UF, and resin-plus-carbon. Each traps different things.
Ceramic candle
The oldest type is a white clay candle in a steel body. Water seeps through tiny pores in the clay. Suspended particles are filtered out on the surface, as WHO describes it.
Some candles are treated with silver. WHO notes the silver acts as a disinfectant. The dirt sits on the outside of the candle. You brush it off under running water now and then.
Hollow-fibre UF membrane
UF stands for ultrafiltration. The cartridge holds a bundle of hollow plastic threads. The pores are fine enough to hold back bacteria, KENT says.
KENT says its Gold Optima membrane does not let bacteria and cysts pass through. Tata Swach goes further. It says its steel unit meets US EPA log-reduction targets for bacteria, viruses and cysts. Both makers state this on their own pages.
Resin and carbon block
Pureit Classic and Aquaguard Amrit use a different stack. Each listing describes four stages. A mesh catches mud first. Carbon and a final treatment stage handle the rest.
These cartridges have a built-in stop. When the filter is spent, the flow shuts off. You cannot drink through a dead cartridge by mistake.
Whatever the type, the physics is the same as a tea strainer. Big things stay behind. Small things pass. The next section shows what counts as small.
What Does a Gravity Water Filter Remove, and What Does It Miss?
A gravity filter removes mud, rust, bacteria and cysts. Good UF units also claim viruses. It does not remove dissolved salts, hardness, fluoride, nitrate or arsenic. Those pass straight through. That single fact decides whether you should buy one.
The Bureau of Indian Standards sets the rules in IS 10500. Here are the limits that matter for a home buyer.

The second number in each BIS row is the permissible limit. BIS allows it only when no better source exists. The first number is the one to aim for.
What "does not remove TDS" means for taste
TDS is the total of salts and minerals dissolved in water. A gravity filter leaves it unchanged. So the water tastes the same going in and coming out.
WHO rates taste by TDS. Under 300 mg/l is excellent. From 300 to 600 is good. From 600 to 900 is fair, and 900 to 1,200 is poor. Above 1,200 is unacceptable. WHO adds that water under 1,000 mg/l is usually acceptable to consumers.
So if your tap water already tastes fine, a gravity filter keeps that taste. If it tastes salty or flat, no candle will fix it.
The virus question, honestly
WHO runs a scheme that tests household water treatment products. It says plainly that methods vary in how well they remove bacteria, viruses and protozoa. A plain ceramic candle is a mechanical filter. Do not assume it stops viruses unless the maker says so.
Tata Swach states its unit meets US EPA log-reduction targets for all three groups. KENT names bacteria and cysts only. Read the maker's own words, not the box. When in doubt in monsoon, boil as well. WHO calls boiling a very effective method.
Should You Buy a Gravity Filter or an RO Purifier?
Buy a gravity filter if your water is low in salts. It handles germs and mud. Buy RO if your water is salty, hard or high in fluoride. A cheap TDS meter tells you which side you are on. Test before you buy, not after.
- Dip a TDS meter in a glass of your raw tap water. Read the number in ppm. One ppm is one mg/l.
- Under 500 ppm: a gravity filter is a fair fit. BIS calls 500 the acceptable limit. RAMA rates its steel filter for water up to 500 ppm.
- 500 to 1,000 ppm: a gravity filter still works, but the water will taste as it does now. Tata Swach says its cartridge works up to 1,500 ppm. Working is not the same as removing.
- Over 1,000 ppm: go RO. WHO says taste turns poor past 900 and unacceptable past 1,200.
- Check the source too. Borewell water in fluoride belts needs a lab test. A TDS meter cannot see fluoride, nitrate or arsenic.
- Check your power. Long cuts push you toward gravity, or an RO with a big tank.
- Check your wall. Renters who cannot drill get a gravity unit or a counter-top RO.
KENT's own listing says its gravity units are "preferably" for low-TDS water. That is honest, and it is the rule for the whole category.

Why Does a Gravity Filter Matter More in Monsoon?
Monsoon is when tap water is least trusted and power is least reliable. Floods raise the risk of waterborne disease, the NCDC says. A gravity filter keeps working through a power cut. That is when a no-power filter earns its place. Here is what the government and WHO say.
The National Centre for Disease Control writes that cholera spreads through contaminated water or food. Its flood guidelines say water should be chlorinated during and after floods. Floods bring a high risk of waterborne disease outbreaks.
Piped water has spread fast. By 3 March 2026, 81.71 percent of rural homes had a tap. So reports the Jal Jeevan Mission. That is 15.82 crore of 19.36 crore rural households.
A tap is not the same as safe water. The Mission's own 2024 check found 86.5 percent of taps working. Only 76 percent of homes got water that met the prescribed quality standards. Source: PIB, Functionality Assessment 2024.
Filter, boil, or both?
WHO is clear on boiling. Bring water to a rolling boil and it is very effective. The cost is fuel and a flat taste. WHO also notes that chlorine handles most viruses and bacteria, but some protozoa resist it.
A gravity filter and a kettle make a good pair. The filter takes out mud and cysts. A short boil covers the rest on a doubtful day. Our guide on why to boil water in monsoon explains when to do both.
WHO adds one more trick. Letting water stand for two days lets more pathogens settle out. A covered bottom tank helps here.

Which Gravity Water Filter Is Best for Indian Homes in 2026?
For most homes, the KENT Gold 20 L is the pick at Rs 3,299. It has a hollow-fibre UF membrane and room for a family. The Pureit Classic 23 L is the value pick at Rs 2,999. Its filter shuts off when spent. The RAMA steel unit is the buy-once choice.
A plain word about ratings. The two KENT units have thousands of ratings each. Yet they sit at 3.6 to 3.7 stars. Read the recent reviews before you buy. Prices, stars and rating counts below were read off Amazon.in on 6 September 2026. They change often.

KENT Gold 20 L - best overall (Rs 3,299)
This is the one we would put on a family counter. The listing gives a hollow-fibre UF membrane and a nano-silver carbon layer. The membrane is expected to last about 4,000 litres. The tank is clear ABS plastic.
KENT caps use at 120 litres a day. It also says the unit is best on low-TDS water. That is the honest limit of the whole category.

The maker asks you to run two full flush cycles before the first drink. You pour about nine litres at a time into the top. Note that this listing is newer, so the rating base is smaller than KENT's.

The Optima is the most-reviewed gravity purifier we found on Amazon.in. It has over fifteen thousand ratings. KENT's own page gives five litres up top and five below. The same UF membrane sits inside.
It weighs 1.7 kg and fits a hostel shelf. The trade-off is small storage. A family will refill it twice a day.

Eureka Forbes lists four stages. They are particulate, sediment, carbon and what it calls Active Charge. The cartridge is rated for 4,000 litres or about ten months. It stops the flow when spent.
The warranty is six months, which is short. The rating base is small too. It is here for the shut-off at this price.

RAMA 24 L stainless steel - buy once (Rs 6,619)
RAMA is a Chennai maker that has built steel filters for decades. The body is 304 stainless steel with a ten-year warranty on the housing. It ships with two ceramic candles and has two spare slots for faster flow.
The listing rates the candles at 0.5 micron with a carbon core. It says the unit suits water up to 500 ppm TDS. Replacement candles cost Rs 1,274 a pair. The price is two to three times the plastic units, but nothing here cracks.

KENT Gold Star 22 L (Rs 2,899): the biggest KENT tank at a low price. The Gold Star listing says it suits water up to 150 ppm only. It is sold by a third-party seller, so check the seller name before you buy.
Tata Swach: the brand that made gravity UF famous in India. Its own site showed every purifier body sold out when we checked. Only the Tata Swach Bulb 6,000-litre cartridge was on Amazon.in. It costs Rs 699 and has 5,616 ratings. If you already own a Swach, that is your refill.
Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 no-name units: many sit in this band. The ones we checked had no ratings or under 3.5 stars. We did not pick any.
How Do You Set Up and Maintain a Gravity Water Filter?
Flush the new cartridge, fill the top tank, and wait. Clean the candle or membrane when the flow slows. Replace the cartridge at its rated litres. That is the whole routine. Each step below comes from a maker's manual or FAQ.
- Flush first. Pureit asks for two complete flush cycles before the first drink. Throw that water on plants. Other makers ask for one or two fills.
- Fill to the mark, not the brim. Tata Swach says to fill the top tank only to the top of the mesh. Do not fill the top if the bottom tank is full.
- Wait. Tata Swach rates its flow at four to five litres an hour. Fill it at night. Wake up to a full tank.
- Brush the candle. WHO says dirt collects on the outside of a ceramic candle. Brush it off under running water at regular intervals. Never use soap on the clay.
- Backflush the UF cartridge. Tata Swach says slow flow means the cartridge is clogged. Remove it and backflush as the manual shows. Cleaning syringes for UF membranes are sold on Amazon.in.
- Replace at the rated life. KENT about 4,000 L, Pureit 3,000 L, Aquaguard 4,000 L or 10 months, Tata Swach 6,000 L. Units with auto shut-off will stop flowing on their own.
- Wash the bottom tank weekly. Clean water can be re-contaminated by hands and utensils, WHO warns. Rinse the tap too.
A handy check for candle units comes from RAMA's own listing. Stir a spoon of turmeric into a litre of water. Pour it in the top. If the water below runs clear, the candle is doing its job.
Replacement RAMA Spirit candles are Rs 1,274 for two. That is the running cost of a steel filter.
How Much Does a Gravity Water Filter Cost to Run?
Very little. A gravity filter uses no electricity and wastes no water. The only cost is the cartridge. Tata Swach puts it at about 10 paise a litre. KENT, Pureit and Aquaguard cartridges last 3,000 to 4,000 litres each. The unit itself costs Rs 2,280 to Rs 6,619.
Tata Swach's sum is simple. A Rs 600 cartridge that gives 6,000 litres works out to 10 paise a litre. A family of five on ten litres a day gets about eighteen months.
The other makers do not print a per-litre figure. Their cartridge lives are 3,000 to 4,000 litres. Their refill prices vary by seller, so check before you buy.

Why is my gravity water filter so slow?
Four to five litres an hour is normal, Tata Swach says. Slower than that means a clogged candle or membrane. Brush a ceramic candle under running water. Backflush a UF cartridge as the manual shows. If flow does not recover, the cartridge is spent.
Can I use a gravity filter for borewell water?
Only if the borewell water is low in salts. RAMA rates its steel filter for water up to 500 ppm TDS. KENT says its units prefer low-TDS water. Salty or hard borewell water needs RO. Fluoride belts need a lab test as well.
