A cloth dryer machine, also called a wet clothes dryer or an indoor clothes dryer, is a heated appliance that dries laundry indoors without sunlight. Most Indian homes buy the portable kind. A zip-up fabric pod sits over a light frame. A small hot air blower warms the clothes inside. A timer sets the drying time, and the DMR pod below offers settings from 1 hour up to 7 hours.

Every monsoon my balcony turns useless. The clothes go up, the rain comes in, and by evening the kurtas smell sour.

That sour smell has a known cause. A 2012 study by scientists at Kao Corporation in Japan traced the smell of laundry hung to dry indoors to a bacterium called Moraxella osloensis.

Humidity, measured: Mumbai relative humidity is high all year. It runs 76 to 89 percent in the morning and 63 to 85 percent in the afternoon, with 212.3 cm of rain over about 73 rainy days a year. About 95 percent of that rain falls in the southwest monsoon - India Meteorological Department, Pune climatological table.

Those numbers help explain the sour smell. Damp air pulls water out of cotton slowly, so clothes stay wet for longer.

Which type of cloth dryer machine suits your home?

Three types of cloth dryer machine sell in India. Foldable hot air pods are cheapest and suit small flats. Wardrobe style cabinet dryers hold more and stand upright. Front load tumble dryers dry the fastest and cost the most. Flat size and load size decide the right choice.

Start with how much laundry your family makes each day. Two people need very little drying power.

Pods and cabinets are really the same idea. Both blow warm air into a closed fabric space.

Tumble dryers work differently. Clothes turn inside a metal drum while hot air blows through. IFB says its 5.5 kg models dry a load in 60 minutes, and lists a 1.8 kW heater and overheat protection.

Which cloth dryer machines are worth buying in India?

The best cloth dryer machine in India for most small homes is a portable wet clothes dryer under Rs 3,500. Four of the six picks below are portable units for flats, PG rooms and hostels. Two are IFB front load tumble dryers for families with daily laundry. Prices below were checked on 29 October 2026, and they do move.

Buy the foldable wardrobe garment dryer first. It is the cheapest pick at Rs 1,698, and it folds away after the monsoon. Its listing does not state a wattage or a garment count, so check both with the seller before you buy.

Spend more only if you want a warranty you can actually claim. That is where the DMR unit earns its price: its Amazon.in listing gives a 1 year free spare supply warranty.

Verified specification: the DMR-GY05B foldable electric cloth dryer is rated at 600W, offers timer settings from 1 hour up to 7 hours, and folds to 290 x 221 x 108 mm - DMR India product page, checked 29 October 2026. DMR's own site listed it at Rs 4,499 to Rs 4,999 that day, depending on the warranty option, so Amazon.in was cheaper.

Skip the two IFB dryers unless you run laundry every single day. Rs 22,700 buys a lot of rack space and patience.

What does a cloth dryer machine cost to run?

A 600W cloth dryer machine uses about 1.8 units of electricity over a three hour cycle. At Rs 8 per unit, the top domestic slab in the BSES Rajdhani tariff schedule for Delhi, one load costs roughly Rs 14. Twenty loads a month land near Rs 290. Domestic tariffs differ by state, so read your own bill before deciding.

Here is the arithmetic, plainly. 600 watts for 3 hours is 1.8 kilowatt hours.

Multiply by your per unit rate. That is the whole calculation. At Rs 8 a unit, 1.8 units cost Rs 14.40 a load, and 20 loads cost Rs 288 a month. At Rs 4.50 a unit, the same schedule's slab for 201 to 400 units a month, one load costs about Rs 8.

A tumble dryer uses more. IFB lists a 1.8 kW heater and a 125 W motor for its 5.5 kg models. One hour of heating alone is 1.8 units, or about Rs 14 at Rs 8 a unit. IFB gives a maximum cycle time of 180 minutes.

Treat these rupee figures as an estimate, not a promise. Tariff slabs, fixed charges and subsidies all shift the final number.

Why do damp indoor clothes matter for health?

Wet laundry drying indoors adds moisture to closed rooms. One typical drying load adds about 2 to 2.5 litres of water to a home, says a Glasgow School of Art study. Persistent damp lets mould grow on walls and fabric. The World Health Organization links indoor damp and mould to more respiratory symptoms, allergies and asthma. Drying clothes faster keeps that moisture load down. That is the quiet case for a cloth dryer machine.

The WHO guidance puts it directly. Preventing persistent dampness is the most important step for avoiding these effects.

A 2018 review in the European Respiratory Review found sufficient evidence that visible mould and mould smell are linked to asthma in children. The evidence in adults was limited. The review also found sufficient evidence of a link with allergic rhinitis.

None of this means a dryer is a health device. It only means damp rooms are worth avoiding in a long monsoon.

Crack a window when the dryer runs. The water has to leave the room, not just leave the shirt.

Wet Clothes Dryer for a Small Room or PG in the Rainy Season

In a small room or PG with poor ventilation, a wet clothes dryer helps only if the water also leaves the room. A pod dryer has no vent pipe, so the water from your clothes goes into the room air. Run it with a window open or an exhaust fan on. A dehumidifier is the tool that takes water out of the room air itself.

This is the problem behind a common Hinglish search: "Baarish rukne ka naam nahi le rahi aur mere PG ke room mein proper ventilation nahi hai, isliye room mein hamesha seelan aur bandh si smell aati hai." In English: the rain will not stop, my PG room has no proper ventilation, so the room always feels damp and smells stale.

Indoor drying is a big part of that damp. The Glasgow School of Art study found that one typical drying load adds about 2 to 2.5 litres of water to a home. On wash days, drying clothes caused up to 30 percent of the moisture in the homes it studied.

Who should skip a cloth dryer machine?

Homes with a sunny balcony and light laundry do not need a cloth dryer machine. A steel rack plus a ceiling fan dries most light loads and costs almost nothing to run. Renters who move often may also skip one. The appliance earns its place only when sunless days stack up week after week.

1. Count your sunless days - four or more grey days in a row, most monsoon weeks.
2. Check your family size - small children mean daily loads that cannot wait.
3. Measure your drying space - no balcony, or a balcony that floods in rain.
4. Smell last week's laundry - a sour note means clothes are staying wet too long.
5. Read your tariff - Rs 290 a month must feel worth it to you.
6. Try a rack first - if a rack and fan already work, stop there.
