Car Kettle: Can You Boil Water on an Indian Road Trip? (Honest Answer)
Can You Boil Water in a Car? (Honest Answer)
No, you cannot boil water in a moving car using InstaCuppa portable kettles. Our kettles need a 230V wall plug. Cars have 12V cigarette lighter sockets that deliver about 120 watts max. That is not enough energy to bring water to a full boil in any reasonable time.
I know this is not the answer you wanted. But I would rather be honest than sell you a product that does not work for your use case. Here is what actually works for road trips.
Why 12V Car Power Cannot Boil Water
A car cigarette lighter runs at 12 volts and 10 amps. That gives you 120 watts of power. To boil 500ml of water from 25 degrees to 100 degrees, you need about 157 kilojoules of energy. At 120 watts, that takes over 20 minutes — and that assumes 100% efficiency, which never happens in real life.
Physics Fact: Energy to boil 500ml water = mass (0.5 kg) x specific heat (4.18 kJ/kg per degree C) x temperature rise (75 degrees C) = 157 kJ. At 120W, that is 21 minutes at 100% efficiency. Real boil time: 30+ minutes. Most 12V kettles only reach 70-80 degrees, not a full boil.
Most "12V car kettles" on Amazon heat water to 70-80 degrees. That is warm, not boiling. Good enough for instant coffee mix. Not good enough for real chai or sterilizing baby bottles.
12V Car Kettles: Do They Work?
Some 12V car kettles exist from other brands on Amazon India (Rs 800-2,000). They plug into the cigarette lighter. They heat water to warm-to-hot temperatures. But they do not reach a full rolling boil.
If warm water is enough for your needs (mixing instant coffee, warming baby formula to feeding temperature), a 12V car kettle works. If you need boiling water for tea or sterilization, it does not.
Better Alternatives for Indian Road Trips
Here is what I actually do on road trips instead of trying to boil water in the car:
- Carry the V2 and stop at dhabas — highway dhabas have plug points. Plug in your Portable Kettle V2, order food, and your water is ready in 10 minutes
- Use petrol pump rest stops — most Indian Oil, HP, and BP petrol pumps have seating areas with power outlets
- Pack a thermos — boil water before you leave. A good thermos keeps water hot for 6-8 hours
- Use the foldable kettle at hotels — if your road trip includes overnight stops, the Foldable Kettle takes zero space in your bag

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a portable kettle with a car inverter?
Technically yes, if the inverter outputs 230V and handles 300+ watts. But car inverters that powerful cost Rs 3,000-8,000. At that point, stopping at a dhaba is easier and cheaper.
Does InstaCuppa make a 12V car kettle?
No. We do not make 12V car kettles because 12V power cannot produce a proper boil. We prefer to be honest about limitations rather than sell a product that under-delivers.
What is the best way to have hot water on a road trip?
Carry a thermos filled with boiling water from home. It stays hot for 6-8 hours. For longer trips, use your portable kettle at dhaba stops or petrol pump rest areas.
Do highway dhabas have power outlets?
Most dhabas on national highways have standard Indian 3-pin outlets. Ask the owner before plugging in. A 300W kettle draws less than a phone charger, so it is usually fine.
