If you already own a standing steamer or are planning to buy one, these tips help you get consistent results every time.

1. Use filtered or RO water — Indian tap water is hard. Mineral deposits block the steam nozzle within weeks. Use filtered water to extend the life of your steamer by 2 to 3 times. If you see white flakes in the steam, descale immediately with a 50:50 white vinegar and water solution.
2. Hang the garment before starting — Drape your kurta or saree on the built-in hanger before switching on. By the time the steamer heats up (30 to 60 seconds), the garment is already in position. This saves time and stops you from rushing.
3. Hold the nozzle 2 to 3 cm away — Direct contact pushes water droplets into the fabric. Keeping a small gap lets the steam spread evenly. For delicate fabrics like chiffon or silk, hold 4 to 5 cm away and use one light pass instead of holding in one spot.
4. Steam from bottom to top — Steam rises. Starting from the bottom and moving upward means the steam from lower passes continues to work on the fabric as you move up. You get better de-wrinkling with fewer passes.
5. Let it dry for 2 minutes — After steaming, the fabric holds slight moisture. Wearing it immediately can cause new creases. Wait 2 minutes. For cotton, you can use a small fan or air-dry briefly to set the finish faster.
