Best Coffee Beans for Cold Brew and Cold Coffee in India

By Saran Reddy · Founder, InstaCuppa | Last updated: 25 October 2026

The best coffee for cold coffee in India depends on the drink you make. For cold brew, pick roasted Arabica beans and grind them extra coarse. For quick blended cold coffee, instant coffee is easier. India grows coffee in Coorg, Chikmagalur, Araku Valley and Wayanad. This guide covers which Indian coffee beans suit cold brew, which roast to pick, where to buy them, and what they cost in October 2026.

Which Coffee Is Best for Cold Coffee in India?

For cold brew, the best coffee is a roasted Arabica, medium to medium-dark, ground extra coarse. For blended cold coffee, instant coffee works best, because it dissolves in cold milk.

In India, "cold coffee" can mean two different drinks. Cafe-style cold coffee is milk, ice, sugar and coffee, blended until frothy. Cold brew is ground coffee soaked in cold water for 12 to 24 hours, then strained.

Cold coffee drink Coffee to use Grind Example from the brand's own shop (25 October 2026)
Cold brew Roasted coffee, Arabica or mostly Arabica Extra coarse Sleepy Owl Cold Brew Packs: 100% Arabica, Rs 699 for 5 packs
Blended cold coffee (cafe style) Instant coffee No grind needed Country Bean Hazelnut Instant Coffee: Rs 325 for 50 g
Iced coffee Hot-brewed coffee poured over ice Depends on your brewer Any roasted coffee you already like hot

Ground coffee and instant coffee are not the same thing. Sleepy Owl's own shop says its ground coffee does not dissolve in water and needs equipment to brew. Instant coffee is already brewed and dried, so it mixes straight into milk. For recipes, see our cafe-style cold coffee recipe and our guide to cold brew vs iced coffee.

What Makes a Coffee Bean Good for Cold Brew?

The best cold brew beans are medium to dark roast, with chocolate or nutty flavors, and low acidity.

Cold brew soaks coffee in cold water for 12 to 24 hours. In a 2018 lab study, cold brew and hot brew had about the same pH, from 4.85 to 5.13 (Rao and Fuller, Scientific Reports). Hot brew had more total acids. The study used light roasts only. So cold brew may taste less sharp, but it is not acid-free. Pick beans that taste good when brewed slowly:

  • Roast level: Medium to dark roasts usually taste of chocolate, nuts and caramel rather than fruit. Many people like that taste in cold brew. Light roasts can taste sour or fruity when brewed cold. Some people enjoy that, but it is not for everyone.
  • Flavor profile: Look for tasting notes like chocolate, caramel, hazelnut, brown sugar, or toffee on the bag. These notes suit cold brew with or without milk. Fruity or floral coffees are more of a personal taste.
  • Low acidity: High-acid beans can taste sharp in cold brew. Indian roasters often describe their coffees as having low or balanced acidity. For example, Blue Tokai describes its Attikan Estate coffee as sweet, with balanced acidity. Taste still varies by estate and roast, so read the notes on the bag.
  • Freshness: Check the roast date on the bag. The US National Coffee Association says coffee starts to lose freshness almost right after roasting, so buy only enough for one or two weeks (NCA storage guide). Stale coffee gives a flat, lifeless cold brew.

Which Indian Coffee Regions Produce the Best Cold Brew Beans?

Coorg, Chikmagalur, Araku Valley and Wayanad all grow coffee for cold brew. For smooth cold brew, look for Arabica. Chikmagalur and Araku grow a lot of Arabica, while Coorg and Wayanad grow mostly Robusta.

Region State Arabica vs Robusta (Coffee Board, 2025-26 final estimate) Example tasting notes (from the roaster) Our suggestion
Coorg (Kodagu) Karnataka 20,060 tonnes Arabica, 1,01,125 tonnes Robusta. Mostly Robusta. Notes vary by estate. Check the bag. Strong cold brew with milk. Pick an Arabica lot for black cold brew.
Chikmagalur (Chikkamagaluru) Karnataka 41,185 tonnes Arabica, 53,575 tonnes Robusta. A good share of Arabica. Sleepy Owl Original (100% Arabica, Chikmagalur): chocolatey notes Cold brew black or with milk, beginners
Araku Valley Andhra Pradesh Andhra Pradesh: 15,240 tonnes Arabica, 50 tonnes Robusta. Almost all Arabica. ARAKU Selection: dark chocolate and caramel Black cold brew, concentrate, iced lattes
Wayanad Kerala 0 tonnes Arabica, 68,800 tonnes Robusta. All Robusta. Robusta tastes stronger and more bitter than Arabica Very strong cold coffee with milk

If you are new to cold brew, start with an Arabica from Chikmagalur or Araku Valley. Both regions grow a lot of Arabica, and roasters from both sell a coarse grind. For example, ARAKU sells its Signature and Selection coffees in a coarse grind. Coorg is famous for coffee, but most of its crop is Robusta, so check the bag says Arabica.

India grew about 3,73,000 tonnes of coffee in 2025-26, says the Coffee Board of India (final estimate). About 2,62,000 tonnes of that was Robusta and 1,11,000 tonnes was Arabica. So about 70% of Indian coffee is Robusta, not Arabica. Arabica is usually smoother and less bitter, so for smooth cold brew, check that the bag says Arabica.

Which Coffee Brands in India Are Best for Cold Brew?

For cold brew, Sleepy Owl, ARAKU and Blue Tokai sell roasted coffee that suits it. Country Bean and Rage Coffee mostly sell instant coffee, which is for quick cold coffee, not cold brew.

We read every price and stock status below on each brand's own shop on 25 October 2026. Prices change often.

  • Blue Tokai: A large Indian specialty roaster. Its Attikan Estate coffee comes from the Biligiriranga Hills in Karnataka. Blue Tokai calls it the darkest of its standard medium roasts, sweet with nutty notes. Price: Rs 700 for 250 g, in stock. An earlier version of this page called its Riverdale Estate a Coorg coffee. It is from the Shevaroy Hills in Tamil Nadu, and it is a light-roast Gesha, so it is not a cold brew pick.
  • Sleepy Owl: Sells Cold Brew Packs: coarse-ground 100% Arabica in a pack you steep for 12 to 24 hours. Its page says each pack makes about 450 ml of concentrate. Price: Rs 699 for 5 packs. Its Original ground coffee costs Rs 599 for 250 g, with a coarse grind option. Very easy for beginners.
  • Corridors of Coffee: An earlier version of this page listed this Coorg roaster. We could not find its shop online on 25 October 2026, so we no longer list a price or recommend it.
  • Country Bean: Sells flavoured instant coffee, such as Hazelnut and Vanilla. Price: Rs 325 for 50 g. Its shop lists instant coffee, not roasted beans. Use it for quick blended cold coffee, not for cold brew.
  • Rage Coffee: Mostly sells instant coffee in many flavours. Its Whole Beans (500 g, Rs 599 or Rs 699) were sold out on 25 October 2026.
  • Araku Coffee (ARAKU): Arabica from Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh. Signature lists notes of chocolate, green pepper and cherry. Selection lists dark chocolate and caramel. Price: Rs 670 (Signature) and Rs 760 (Selection) for a 250 g pouch, with a coarse grind option.

For your first cold brew, Sleepy Owl's Cold Brew Packs are the easiest, because the coffee is already ground and packed. If you want to choose your own grind, try Blue Tokai Attikan Estate or ARAKU Selection, ground extra coarse. For more picks by brew method, see our complete cold brew guide.

Does Grind Size Really Matter for Cold Brew?

Yes. Extra coarse is the only grind size you should use for cold brew. Anything finer makes your coffee bitter and muddy.

Here is why grind size matters so much:

  • Extra coarse (correct): Looks like raw sugar crystals or coarse sea salt. Water flows through slowly, extracting sweet and smooth compounds over 12-24 hours. Clean, clear cold brew every time.
  • Medium (too fine): Over-extracts during the long steep time. You get bitterness and a muddy, gritty texture. The filter gets clogged.
  • Fine (way too fine): Turns your cold brew into a thick, bitter sludge. The mesh filter cannot catch fine particles. You end up with coffee grounds in your glass.

If you do not have a grinder at home, ask your local roaster to grind beans "for cold brew". "French press grind" is also coarse, so ask for the coarsest setting. You can also check our guide on coffee grinders for cold brew if you want to grind at home.

The InstaCuppa Cold Brew Coffee Maker (2.2 litre) has a fine nylon mesh filter, so extra-coarse grounds stay out of your glass. It was sold out on 25 October 2026. A French press also works for cold brew. See our French press cold brew method.

How Do Fresh Beans Compare to Stale Beans in Cold Brew?

Fresh beans give a richer, more complex cold brew. Stale beans give a flat, one-note taste. Buy only enough coffee for one or two weeks, and check the roast date.

Coffee starts to lose freshness almost right after roasting, says the US National Coffee Association. Air, moisture, heat and light are what make it go stale. Ground coffee needs extra care, because more of it is open to the air.

Here is what fresh vs stale looks like in your cold brew:

  • Fresh beans: Sweet, complex, smooth finish. You can taste the notes on the bag, such as chocolate or caramel.
  • Stale beans: Generic "coffee" flavor with no depth. Slightly papery or cardboard-like aftertaste. No sweetness.

Buy whole beans and grind before each batch for the best results. If that is too much work, buy pre-ground in small quantities (250g at a time) and use within 1-2 weeks of opening.

Store coffee in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dark place, away from the stove and the sun. Views differ on keeping coffee in the fridge. Coffee takes up moisture and smells from the air. If you do use the fridge, the NCA says to use a truly airtight container (NCA storage guide).

Where Can You Buy Specialty Coffee Beans in India?

Roaster websites, online marketplaces and local specialty stores are your three best options. Buy from the roaster when you can, because the roast date is easier to check.

  • Online marketplaces: Many Indian coffee brands also sell on marketplaces such as Amazon.in. Search for "cold brew" or "coarse grind", and check the roast date and whether the pack is instant or ground coffee.
  • Roaster websites: Blue Tokai, Sleepy Owl and ARAKU all sell direct on their own shops, with a choice of grind. Buying direct can mean fresher beans, because the coffee spends less time in a warehouse.
  • Local specialty shops: Cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai have specialty coffee shops that sell fresh-roasted beans. Ask for their medium-dark roast for cold brew.
  • Direct from estates: If you visit Coorg or Chikmagalur, some estates sell coffee at their own shops. Prices vary, so compare them with roaster prices, and ask whether the coffee is Arabica or Robusta.

My recommendation: start with our cold brew recipe (ratio, time and method) and any medium-roast Arabica. Once you know what you like, explore smaller roasters and single-estate coffees. Indian coffee has a lot of variety, and cold brew is an easy way to taste it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use instant coffee for cold brew?

No. Instant coffee is already brewed and dried, so it simply dissolves in water. Cold brew needs roasted ground coffee that soaks slowly for 12 to 24 hours. Instant coffee is fine for quick blended cold coffee, but it will not make cold brew. For cold brew, always use roasted ground coffee.

Is Arabica or Robusta better for cold brew?

Arabica is usually better. It is smoother, sweeter, and less bitter than Robusta. Many Indian specialty roasters sell Arabica or Arabica-heavy blends, even though about 70% of Indian coffee is Robusta. Some Robusta blends can work for very strong cold brew, but they tend to be harsher and more bitter.

How much do good cold brew beans cost in India?

At the roaster shops we checked on 25 October 2026, roasted coffee cost about Rs 600 to Rs 950 for 250 g. Sleepy Owl ground coffee was Rs 599, Blue Tokai single estates were Rs 650 to Rs 850, and ARAKU pouches were Rs 670 to Rs 940. Rare micro-lots cost more: one ARAKU lot was Rs 2,400 for 250 g. How many batches 250 g makes depends on your ratio and jug size. See our cold brew ratio chart and our InstaCuppa Cold Brew Maker guide.

Should I buy whole beans or pre-ground for cold brew?

Whole beans are better because they stay fresh longer. Grind them extra coarse just before brewing. But if you do not own a grinder, pre-ground "cold brew" or "French press" grind works fine. Just use it within 1-2 weeks of opening.

Can I mix beans from different regions for cold brew?

Yes. Blending is an easy way to find a taste you like. For example, mix a chocolate-noted Chikmagalur coffee with a caramel-noted Araku coffee. Start with a 50/50 split and adjust based on your taste. If you do not want to blend, Sleepy Owl Cold Brew Packs are one ready-made option.

Which is the best coffee for cold coffee in India?

It depends on the drink. For cold brew, use a roasted Arabica, medium to medium-dark, ground extra coarse, such as Sleepy Owl Cold Brew Packs, ARAKU Selection or Blue Tokai Attikan Estate. For blended cafe-style cold coffee, use instant coffee, because it dissolves in cold milk.

Where can I buy premium cold brew coffee in India?

Buy from Indian roasters' own websites, such as Blue Tokai, Sleepy Owl and ARAKU. They let you pick a coarse grind for cold brew and show the price and stock. Many brands also sell on online marketplaces, but check the roast date first.
