Belgian Waffle vs Regular Waffle: What's the Difference?
What is the difference between a belgian waffle and a regular waffle? It comes down to thickness, pockets, and how the batter rises. Belgian waffles are thick, with deep pockets that hold loads of toppings. Regular waffles are thinner, crispier, and faster to make. Your mini waffle maker makes the regular kind — and here is why that is actually great for most people.

What Is the Difference Between a Waffle and a Belgian Waffle?
A Belgian waffle is a thick waffle with big, deep pockets and a light, airy inside. A regular waffle, or normal waffle, is thinner and denser. Its pockets are small and shallow. A standard Belgian waffle is about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) thick, made in a 7-inch iron with deep grooves, says Tasting Table.
The batter is different too. Regular waffles rise with baking powder. Classic Belgian (Brussels) batter often uses yeast, so it is lighter and crisper. Some people search for a "Belgium waffle". It is the same thing as a Belgian waffle.
What is a waffle? A waffle is a dish made from batter or dough. It cooks between two hot plates with a pattern, and the plates press the grid shape into it. Belgium alone has more than a dozen regional kinds, says the Wikipedia entry on waffles.
What Makes Belgian Waffles Different?
Size, thickness, and the rising method.
| Feature | Belgian Waffle | Regular Waffle |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | About 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in a standard Belgian iron | Thinner and denser |
| Pocket depth | Deep — holds syrup | Shallow — lighter |
| Batter | Often yeast or whipped egg whites | Baking powder |
| Cook time | Up to about 6 minutes | About 2 minutes (3 to 5 minutes in the InstaCuppa Mini) |
| Equipment | Special Belgian iron | Any waffle maker |
| Texture | Soft and fluffy inside | Crispy outside, soft inside |
| Size | Often a 7-inch (17.8 cm) round iron | Many sizes; a mini maker makes 4-inch (10 cm) waffles |
"Belgian waffles take a little longer until they're done (up to six minutes), while American ones only need about two minutes." (Stephanie Friedman, Tasting Table, 2024)
Regular waffles are the American kind. An American waffle is "much thinner and denser" than a yeast Belgian one, with "much smaller pockets", says Fine Dining Lovers.
Which Tastes Better?
It depends on what you want. Belgian waffles are like eating fluffy cake — thick, soft, pillow-like. Regular waffles are like eating crispy toast — golden, crunchy edges with a soft center. If you like rich dessert-style breakfasts, Belgian wins. If you like quick crispy bites, regular wins.
Can You Make Belgian Waffles in a Mini Waffle Maker?
Not really. Belgian waffles need a special iron with deep pockets and space for thick batter. A mini waffle maker like the InstaCuppa Mini is a small 4-inch (10 cm) maker. It makes classic regular waffles, not deep Belgian ones. You can pour Belgian-style batter into a mini maker, but the result will be a thick, slightly underdone waffle without the signature deep pockets.
Why Are Regular Waffles Better for Indian Homes?
Three reasons.
- Speed: A regular waffle cooks in about 2 minutes in a standard iron, and in 3 to 5 minutes in our mini maker. A Belgian waffle can take up to about 6 minutes. Indian mornings are busy.
- Versatility: A small regular waffle maker handles sweet and savoury ideas. Try banana and honey, or cheese and sweet corn on top. A Belgian iron is built for thick, airy batter.
- Cost: The InstaCuppa Mini Waffle Maker costs Rs 1,299 (our store price, checked 14 October 2026). A Belgian waffle iron is a bigger machine, and it usually costs more. Check the live price before you buy.
Do Belgian Waffles Exist in India?
Mostly in cafes and restaurants. Chains like The Belgian Waffle Co. serve waffles in many Indian cities. Its outlet in Bodakdev, Ahmedabad, lists about Rs 400 for two on District (checked 14 October 2026). Waffle House, a name many people know, is a big chain in the southern United States. Making regular waffles at home costs much less per waffle. See our cost per waffle at home vs a cafe for the math, or start with our eggless waffle recipe.

Mini Waffle vs Normal Waffle: What Is Different?
A mini waffle is a smaller regular waffle. The batter and the pocket style are the same. The size, the calories and the cooking style change. The InstaCuppa Mini makes one 4-inch (10 cm) waffle at a time, in 3 to 5 minutes, on 350 W.
- Standard waffle size: There is no single standard. Health Canada's nutrient file lists a plain homemade waffle as an 11.4 cm square (50 g) or a 17.8 cm round (75 g). A Belgian iron is often 7 inches (17.8 cm) across.
- Calories: The same file gives 291 kcal per 100 g for a plain homemade waffle. That is about 146 kcal for the 50 g square and about 218 kcal for the 75 g round, before toppings. A 10 cm mini waffle is smaller than both.
- Normal waffle price: At home, a waffle costs far less than at a cafe. At one Belgian Waffle Co. outlet, the listed cost is about Rs 400 for two.
- Belgian waffle maker vs regular: A Belgian maker has deep plates for thick waffles. A regular or mini maker has smaller plates and makes thinner waffles faster.

Can You Get Belgian Waffle Texture at Home?
Close — but not identical. To get closer to Belgian texture with a regular waffle maker:
- Beat egg whites until they form stiff peaks, then fold them in for more lift
- If you use yeast, use warm (not hot) milk and let the batter rest for an hour or overnight
- Some cooks add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch for a crispier outside
- Cook an extra minute for deeper browning
The waffle will still be thinner than true Belgian, but the taste will be richer and the outside crispier.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Belgian waffles healthier than regular?
Not usually. Calories follow weight. Health Canada's nutrient file lists a plain homemade waffle at 291 kcal per 100 g. That is about 146 kcal for an 11.4 cm square waffle and about 218 kcal for a 17.8 cm round one. A thick Belgian waffle is heavier, so it usually has more calories, even before toppings. Smaller, thinner waffles make portion control easier.
Can I buy a Belgian waffle maker in India?
Yes. Belgian waffle makers with deep plates are sold online in India. Prices change with the brand, size and sale, so check the live price before you buy. Our best waffle maker in India guide, in Related Reading below, compares mini and Belgian picks.
What is a Liege waffle?
A Liege waffle is a type of Belgian waffle made from a raised brioche-style dough with pearl sugar. The sugar caramelizes on the iron, so it is sweet, sticky and crunchy. It takes longer than a batter waffle, because the dough has to rise first.
Which is more popular globally?
There is no reliable global count, so we cannot say which one wins. What we know: in Belgium, Liege waffles are often sold by street vendors as a handheld snack. At home, most people make whatever their waffle iron makes.
Can I use the same batter for both?
The base is similar, but Belgian batter often uses yeast or whipped egg whites for extra rise. Regular batter uses baking powder. You can use regular batter in a Belgian iron. It just will not fill the deep pockets fully.
Is a mini waffle the same as a normal waffle?
Yes, in style. A mini waffle is a small regular waffle with the same batter and shallow pockets. The InstaCuppa Mini makes one 4-inch (10 cm) waffle at a time, so you cook a batch one by one.
What is the standard waffle size?
There is no single standard size. Health Canada's nutrient file lists homemade waffles as an 11.4 cm square or a 17.8 cm round. Belgian irons are often 7 inches (17.8 cm) across. Mini makers make 4-inch (10 cm) waffles.
