Two of the three are our own products, so read the bias note below first.

What Is an Automatic Tea Maker (Chai Maker Machine)?

An automatic tea maker is a small electric brewer for Indian milk chai. You add milk, water, tea leaves, sugar and masala. You press one button. It heats, brews, and switches itself off before the milk boils over. People also call it a chai maker machine, an automatic tea making machine, or a milk tea maker.

It is not a kettle. A kettle boils water and burns milk. A chai maker is built to heat milk slowly and stop at the right moment. That is the whole point. Why We Wrote This Review

India is the world's largest producer and consumer of black tea. The country grew 1,369.98 million kg of tea in 2025, up from 1,303.53 million kg in 2024 (Press Information Bureau, Tea Board of India). Most of it is drunk at home. A Tea Board study put home consumption at about 1,197 million kg in 2023, or about 840 grams per person a year (Tea Board India, Pilot Study on Domestic Consumption, 2024).

The same study found that more than 80% of households take their tea with milk and sugar. That is chai. And in most homes, one person makes it. Usually the mom. She is packing tiffin boxes and getting the kids ready. She just wants five minutes of peace before the rush.

I have watched my wife go through this routine. Baby on one hip, milk on the stove, one eye on the clock. She is not looking for a fancy gadget. She wants kadak chai without standing there to watch it.

That is the promise of an automatic tea maker. Put everything in, press a button, walk away. But do they deliver? This review compares the three machines Indian buyers shortlist most. Two are ours. We scored each one on six things that matter to a busy home.

How Good Is the InstaCuppa Steel Chai Maker?

The InstaCuppa Automatic Chai Maker (Steel) scores 8.5 out of 10. It brews everything in one pot, the way a stove does. The carafe is stainless steel, so it cannot shatter. It costs Rs 5,999 and brews a full 600 ml batch in 10 to 12 minutes.

This is our flagship chai maker, and the one I use every morning. The steel carafe was a deliberate choice. We wanted a chai maker a mom with a toddler could use. No worry about broken glass on the kitchen floor.

How It Brews

Everything goes into the steel carafe. Milk, water, tea powder, sugar and your masala, all in one pot. Press the Tea/Chai button and walk away. In 10 to 12 minutes your chai is ready. The machine shuts off before the liquid can boil over.

This is how your mother makes it on the stove. Everything together, simmering as one. You get the depth of flavour that only comes when milk and tea brew together from the start.

What We Liked

• One-pot Indian-style brewing - no separate milk container, no extra steps. Everything in, button pressed, done.
• Unbreakable steel carafe - the single biggest advantage for families with small children. My son is one year old. Things get knocked off counters.
• 600 ml per batch - InstaCuppa rates it at 3 to 4 small cups or 2 large mugs. My wife and I get our morning chai with a small cup to spare.
• Four modes on one button ring - Tea/Chai, Coffee, Boiling and Cold Froth. Warm milk for the kids and cold coffee foam in summer, no extra gadget.
• Cool exterior - double-wall insulation keeps the outside cool to touch while it brews.
• Simple cleaning - rinse the carafe with warm water after each brew. For tea stains, a 10-minute soak in warm water and baking soda. Never put the base in water.

What We Didn't Like

• Two rounds for a big family - if the in-laws are visiting and everyone wants chai at once, you will run two batches.
• 10 to 12 minute brew - the slowest of the three. Steel takes longer to heat than glass. Not a deal-breaker, but the Wonderchef's 7 to 8 minutes is quicker.
• 1-year warranty - InstaCuppa gives a 1-year replacement guarantee on manufacturing defects. Wonderchef gives 2 years.

Best For

The InstaCuppa Automatic Chai Maker (Glass) scores 8 out of 10. It brews chai the same one-pot way, but in a clear borosilicate glass carafe. It is listed at Rs 5,799, brews 400 ml in 8 to 10 minutes, and was sold out on 10 September 2026.

The glass version is the original InstaCuppa chai maker. Same one-pot brewing, in a clear carafe that lets you watch the chai darken as it brews.

How It Brews

Same as the steel. All ingredients go into the glass carafe together. Press Chai. Walk away. The carafe holds 600 ml, but the sweet spot for milk chai is the 400 ml mark. That stops spills. Glass heats faster than steel, so a batch takes 8 to 10 minutes.

There is something calming about watching your chai brew through the glass. You see the colour deepen as the leaves infuse. My wife calls it meditation before the morning madness.

What We Liked

• Same one-pot brewing - everything together, stove style. The flavour matches the steel version.
• Watch your chai brew - you know exactly when it hits the colour you like.
• Lighter than steel - easier to pour. The handle stays cool and the V-spout pours without drips.
• Faster brew - 8 to 10 minutes against the steel's 10 to 12.
• Travel-friendly - compact and light. The product page pitches it for hotel rooms and office desks.
• Lift-off jar - the carafe detaches and rinses under the tap.

What We Didn't Like

• Glass can break - drop it and it shatters. In a kitchen with small kids, that is a real risk. We built the steel version to fix this.
• 400 ml per batch - two cups. Enough for a couple, tight for three.
• Sold out - on 10 September 2026 the product page showed it unavailable. The page shows live stock, so check it before you plan around this pick.

Best For

How Does the Wonderchef Chai Magic Perform?

The Wonderchef Chai Magic scores 7.5 out of 10. It is the fastest of the three at 7 to 8 minutes. It has a cleaning cycle and a 2-year warranty. It brews the tea first and adds the milk from a top container, so it is not one-pot chai. It costs Rs 4,999 on Wonderchef's site and Rs 5,099 on Amazon.in.

Wonderchef is Chef Sanjeev Kapoor's brand. That name carries weight in Indian kitchens. The Chai Magic takes a different route to automatic chai, and in some ways that route has real advantages. I want to be fair about this.

How It Brews

Wonderchef's own page describes it this way. Water, tea, sugar and spices go into the main glass jar. Milk goes into a container on top. Press the button. The machine brews the tea, then releases the milk into it at the right moment. Chai is ready in 7 to 8 minutes (Wonderchef product page).

It is clever engineering. Wonderchef says the timed milk release means zero risk of boiling over and no burnt milk. But it is not how most Indian homes make chai. We boil everything together. That rolling boil is what gives masala chai its depth.

What We Liked

• Fastest brew: 7 to 8 minutes - the quickest of the three. When morning time is measured in minutes, that counts.
• Cleaning cycle - add a drop of liquid soap and water and run the Masala Chai mode. The machine cleans itself.
• 2-year warranty - with on-site service that Wonderchef says covers over 20,000 pin codes. That is a year more than InstaCuppa.
• Four modes - masala chai, kahwa, plain milk, water, coffee and a frothy cappuccino from instant coffee, by Wonderchef's list.
• Lower price - Rs 4,999 on the brand site against Rs 5,999 for the InstaCuppa Steel.

What We Didn't Like

• Milk is added later - the milk does not brew with the leaves from the start. Some flavour depth is lost.
• Glass only - there is no steel option, so it can break.
• 500 ml jar - Wonderchef rates it at 4 cups. The InstaCuppa Steel's 600 ml batch is a little larger.
• Mixed Amazon rating - 3.3 out of 5 stars from 103 ratings on Amazon.in on 10 September 2026.
• Two containers to fill - the main jar and the milk container. One more step than a one-pot machine.

Best For

Homes that want the fastest cup and the longest warranty. Anyone who prefers a self-cleaning cycle. If one-pot flavour matters less to you than speed, it is a solid buy.

The best all-round automatic tea maker for most Indian homes. One-pot brewing gives proper kadak chai. The steel carafe cannot shatter, which is a real safety win with small children. The 600 ml batch covers 2 to 3 people with ease.

It loses points on brew time and on its 1-year warranty against Wonderchef's 2 years. But for a busy mom making chai for herself, her partner and maybe one more, this is the one I would recommend. It is the one I use myself.

#2 - InstaCuppa Automatic Chai Maker, Glass (8/10)

Nearly everything the steel version offers, in a lighter, faster package. The clear carafe is lovely. It heats in 8 to 10 minutes and pours cleanly through the V-spout.

It drops half a point for the 400 ml batch and the breakage risk. It is also sold out as we write this. If your kitchen is calm and your kids are older, it is a fine daily driver when it returns.

#3 - Wonderchef Chai Magic (7.5/10)

The speed and service champion. Chai in 7 to 8 minutes, a self-cleaning cycle, and a 2-year warranty with on-site service. Chef Sanjeev Kapoor's brand carries real trust. At Rs 4,999 it is also the cheapest of the three.

It scores lower because the milk joins the brew late, so it is not stove-style chai. It is glass only. And its Amazon.in rating sits at 3.3 stars. If speed and warranty matter more to you than one-pot flavour, it is a solid machine.

The Bottom Line

All three machines do something valuable. They take the most tiring part of an Indian morning and automate it. No more standing at the stove watching milk. No more burnt chai at the bottom of the pan.
