Automatic Tea Maker Review: We Tested the Top Options So You Don't Have To

Why We Tested These Automatic Tea Makers

India drinks over a billion cups of chai every single day. And in most homes, it's one person who makes that chai — usually the mom, usually while simultaneously packing tiffin boxes, getting kids ready for school, and trying to have five minutes of peace before the morning chaos peaks.

I've watched my wife go through this routine. Baby on one hip, milk on the stove, one eye on the clock. She's not looking for a fancy gadget. She wants something that makes kadak chai without needing her to stand there and watch it. | Last updated: 2026-03-31

That's the promise of an automatic tea maker. Put everything in, press a button, walk away. Come back to chai that's ready to pour.

But do they actually deliver? We tested the three most popular automatic chai makers available in India right now — two of which are our own products — and scored them honestly across six criteria that matter to busy Indian moms. India's tea market is worth USD 11.86 billion, with 80% of that consumed at home. If you're going to spend Rs 5,000 on a machine to make your daily chai, you deserve a proper review. Not marketing fluff.

This is that review.

Bias Disclosure

I'm the founder of InstaCuppa. We sell two of the three products reviewed here. I have a financial interest in you buying our chai makers.

I'm telling you this upfront because I believe you deserve to know. Too many "review" articles online are written by brands pretending to be neutral. I won't do that.

What I will do is be honest about where our products fall short and where the competition shines. If the Wonderchef Chai Magic is the better fit for your family, I'd rather you buy that than buy ours and feel disappointed. Trust is worth more than one sale.

Read on. Judge for yourself.

How We Tested: Our Criteria

We used each machine daily for over two weeks. Morning chai, evening chai, guests, solo cups. Here are the six criteria we scored on: Criteria What We Looked At Brew Quality Does it taste like proper kadak chai? That rolling-boil flavour where milk, tea, and spices become one.

We used each machine daily for over two weeks. Morning chai, evening chai, guests, solo cups. Here are the six criteria we scored on:

Criteria What We Looked At
Brew Quality Does it taste like proper kadak chai? That rolling-boil flavour where milk, tea, and spices become one.
Ease of Use Can you operate it with one hand while holding a toddler? How many steps to get from ingredients to chai?
Cleanup How long does cleanup take? Self-clean mode effectiveness. Number of parts to wash.
Capacity How many proper cups per batch? Not tiny 100ml cups — real 150-200ml chai cups.
Safety Auto shut-off, material choices (glass, steel, or plastic components), breakage risk around kids.
Value for Money What you get for what you pay. Warranty, trial period, build quality per rupee.

Each product was scored out of 10 based on a weighted average of these criteria. Brew quality and safety got the highest weightage because — let's be real — that's what matters most when you're making something your family drinks every single day.

What Did We Find in Our Testing?

8.5 / 10 Price: Rs 4,999 | Capacity: 700ml carafe, brews up to 600ml (2-3 cups) | Material: Stainless Steel This is our flagship chai maker, and the one I personally use every morning.

8.5 / 10

Price: Rs 4,999 | Capacity: 700ml carafe, brews up to 600ml (2-3 cups) | Material: Stainless Steel

This is our flagship chai maker, and the one I personally use every morning. The stainless steel carafe was a deliberate design decision — we wanted a chai maker that a mom with a toddler could use without worrying about broken glass on the kitchen floor.

How It Brews

Everything goes into the steel carafe. Milk, water, tea powder, sugar, your masala — all in one pot. Press the Chai button. Walk away. In 10-12 minutes, your chai is ready.

This is the traditional Indian brewing method. The same way your mother makes it on the stove. Everything together, simmering and infusing. The result is proper kadak chai with that depth of flavour you only get when milk and tea brew together from the start.

What We Liked

  • One-pot Indian-style brewing — no separate compartments, no extra steps. Everything in, button pressed, done.
  • Unbreakable steel carafe — this is the single biggest advantage for families with small children. My son is one year old. Things get knocked off counters. Glass is a risk I don't want in my kitchen right now.
  • Stainless steel carafe with a food-grade plastic whisker inside for frothing and mixing.
  • 700ml carafe, brews up to 600ml — enough for 2-3 proper cups. My wife and I get our morning chai, with a small cup left over.
  • Cold froth mode — makes cold coffee and iced lattes without a separate frother. Nice bonus for summer.
  • Sleek, compact design — doesn't take over the kitchen counter. The brushed steel looks genuinely good.

What We Didn't Like

  • Only 2-3 cups per batch — if your in-laws are visiting and everyone wants chai at the same time, you'll need to run two batches. For a family of 4+, this is a real limitation.
  • 10-12 minute brew time — the steel carafe takes longer to heat than glass. It's not a dealbreaker, but if you're comparing it to the 7-8 minutes of the Wonderchef, it's noticeably slower.

Best For

Small families of 2-3 people. Moms with toddlers who need an unbreakable option. Anyone who prioritises traditional Indian-style brewing with a stainless steel carafe.

What Did We Find in Our Testing?

8 / 10 Price: Rs 4,999 | Capacity: 400ml (2 cups) | Material: Borosilicate Glass The glass version is the original InstaCuppa chai maker. Same one-pot brewing philosophy, same zero-plastic approach — just in a transparent borosilicate glass carafe that lets you watch the entire brewing process unfold. How It Brews Identical to the steel version.

8 / 10

Price: Rs 4,999 | Capacity: 400ml (2 cups) | Material: Borosilicate Glass

The glass version is the original InstaCuppa chai maker. Same one-pot brewing philosophy, same zero-plastic approach — just in a transparent borosilicate glass carafe that lets you watch the entire brewing process unfold.

How It Brews

Identical to the steel version. All ingredients go into the glass carafe together. Press Chai. Walk away. The difference is the brew time — 8-10 minutes instead of 10-12, because glass heats up faster than steel.

There's something oddly satisfying about watching your chai brew through the glass. You see the colour deepen as the tea leaves infuse, the milk swirling in. My wife says it's like meditation before the morning madness begins.

What We Liked

  • Same one-pot brewing process — everything together, traditional Indian style. The flavour is identical to the steel version.
  • Watch your chai brew — the transparent carafe makes the whole process visible. You know exactly when your chai hits that perfect colour.
  • Lighter than steel — easier to pour, especially if you're filling multiple cups.
  • Faster brew time — 8-10 minutes vs the steel's 10-12 minutes. Glass heats more efficiently.
  • Glass brew path — the carafe is borosilicate glass. The only plastic part is a small food-grade whisker used for frothing and mixing.

What We Didn't Like

  • Glass is breakable — this is the obvious concern. Drop it, and it shatters. In a kitchen with small kids running around, this is a genuine risk. We designed the steel version specifically to address this.
  • Only 400ml / 2 cups per batch — smaller capacity than the steel version. Enough for a couple, but barely enough for three.

Best For

Couples without small children, or anyone who loves the visual experience of watching chai brew. If breakage isn't a concern in your kitchen, the glass version is elegant and slightly faster.

7.5 / 10 Price: Rs 4,999 (Rs 2,499 on sale) | Capacity: ~1L jar (marked to 500ml), brews ~600ml (4-5 cups) | Material: Borosilicate Glass The Wonderchef Chai Magic is backed by the Sanjeev Kapoor brand — a name every Indian kitchen trusts.

7.5 / 10

Price: Rs 4,999 (Rs 2,499 on sale) | Capacity: ~1L jar (marked to 500ml), brews ~600ml (4-5 cups) | Material: Borosilicate Glass

The Wonderchef Chai Magic is backed by the Sanjeev Kapoor brand — a name every Indian kitchen trusts. It takes a different approach to automatic chai making, and in some ways, that approach has real advantages. I want to be fair about this.

How It Brews

Unlike the InstaCuppa, the Wonderchef uses a split brewing method. You add water, tea, sugar, and spices to the main glass jar. Milk goes into a separate compartment on top. The machine brews the tea first, then automatically releases the milk into the brewing tea at a precisely timed moment.

It's clever engineering. The separate milk addition prevents boil-overs and allows for a more controlled brew. But it's not how most Indian homes make chai. We boil everything together — that's what gives masala chai its depth, that proper rolling boil where every ingredient melds.

Does the taste difference matter? Honestly, most people won't notice a huge gap. Chai purists will. Casual drinkers probably won't.

What We Liked

  • Larger capacity — 4-5 cups per batch — this is the Wonderchef's biggest win. The jar is approximately 1 litre (marked to 500ml), and in practice brews ~600ml per cycle — enough for 4-5 cups. If you're making chai for the whole family every morning, you can do it in a single batch. No second rounds. For a mom trying to get everyone out the door, that matters.
  • Faster brew time — 7-8 minutes — the quickest of the three machines we tested. When morning time is measured in minutes, every minute counts.
  • Sanjeev Kapoor brand — trusted name in Indian kitchenware. The brand carries weight, and Wonderchef's overall product quality across their range is solid.
  • 2-year warranty — same as InstaCuppa. Doorstep service. That's fair coverage for this price point.

What We Didn't Like

  • Separate milk compartment is food-grade plastic — milk sits in a food-grade plastic container before being dispensed into the brewing tea.
  • Not traditional Indian brewing — the milk doesn't brew with the tea from the start. It joins midway. Some flavour nuance is lost. If you're used to kadak chai where everything boils together, you might notice the difference.
  • Glass only, no steel option — breakable. No choice if you want shatterproof.
  • Bulkier design — the separate milk compartment adds height and footprint. In a compact Indian kitchen, counter space is precious.

Best For

Larger families of 3-4 people who need maximum cups per batch. Sale hunters — when the price drops to Rs 2,499 on Amazon, it's genuinely excellent value for the capacity you get.

What Did We Find in Our Testing?

#1 — InstaCuppa Automatic Chai Maker, Steel (8.5/10) The best all-round automatic tea maker for most Indian homes. The one-pot brewing method produces proper kadak chai. The stainless steel carafe is unbreakable — a genuine safety advantage if you have small children.

#1 — InstaCuppa Automatic Chai Maker, Steel (8.5/10)

The best all-round automatic tea maker for most Indian homes. The one-pot brewing method produces proper kadak chai. The stainless steel carafe is unbreakable — a genuine safety advantage if you have small children. The only plastic part is a small food-grade whisker used for frothing and mixing — not a container holding hot liquid. The 700ml carafe brews up to 600ml, handling 2-3 cups per batch comfortably.

It loses points on brew time (10-12 minutes is the slowest of the three) and capacity (can't match the Wonderchef for larger families). But for a busy mom making chai for herself, her partner, and maybe one more — this is the one I'd recommend. It's the one I use myself.

#2 — InstaCuppa Automatic Chai Maker, Glass (8/10)

Nearly everything the steel version offers, in a lighter, faster package. The transparent carafe is beautiful — watching chai brew is genuinely calming. Heats faster (8-10 minutes), pours easier.

It drops half a point for the smaller 400ml capacity (only 2 cups) and the breakage risk. If your kitchen is calm and your kids are older, the glass version is a lovely daily driver. If you have a curious toddler, get the steel.

#3 — Wonderchef Chai Magic (7.5/10)

The capacity champion. 4-5 cups per batch in 7-8 minutes — the fastest, largest-volume option here (the ~1L jar (marked to 500ml) brews ~600-700ml per cycle). The Sanjeev Kapoor brand carries real trust. And when it drops to Rs 2,499 on Amazon sales, the value per cup is hard to beat.

It scores lower because the separate milk compartment changes the traditional Indian brewing process and there's no steel option. But if you consistently need chai for 4-5 people and you catch a sale — the Wonderchef is a genuinely solid machine.

The Bottom Line

All three of these machines do something valuable: they take the most time-consuming part of an Indian mom's morning and automate it. No more standing at the stove watching milk. No more burnt chai at the bottom of the pan. No more starting over because the baby started crying.

If you're a family of 2-3 with small kids, the InstaCuppa Steel is the safest, most reliable choice. If you love glass and your kitchen is kid-free, the InstaCuppa Glass is elegant and fast. If you need volume for a larger family, the Wonderchef Chai Magic delivers more chai per batch than anything else on the market.

Choose the one that fits your family's morning. There's no wrong answer — just different trade-offs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an automatic tea maker worth Rs 5,000?

If you make chai twice a day and spend 15-20 minutes each time at the stove, that's over 180 hours a year. An automatic tea maker gives you that time back — for Rs 5,000. The running cost is negligible (a few paise per cup in electricity). For busy moms juggling mornings, it's less about the money and more about the 15 minutes you get back every single day.

Which automatic tea maker makes the best kadak chai?

The InstaCuppa chai makers — both steel and glass — produce the most authentic kadak chai because they use one-pot brewing. All ingredients simmer together from the start, just like on a stove. The Wonderchef's separated milk addition still makes good chai, but chai purists may notice the difference in depth of flavour.

Can I make masala chai in an automatic tea maker?

Yes, all three machines handle masala chai. Add your elaichi, adrak, tulsi, or any spices along with the tea and sugar. With the InstaCuppa, everything goes in together from the start. With the Wonderchef, spices go in with the water and tea — not the separate milk compartment.

Is the plastic in the Wonderchef Chai Magic safe?

Wonderchef uses a food-grade plastic milk compartment. InstaCuppa's carafe is glass or stainless steel, with a food-grade plastic whisker inside for frothing and mixing.

Which automatic chai maker is best for a family of 4?

The Wonderchef Chai Magic is the best choice for a family of 4-5. Its jar is approximately 1 litre (marked to 500ml), and it brews ~600ml per cycle — enough for 4-5 cups in a single go. The InstaCuppa Steel handles 2-3 cups, so you'd need two batches for a family of four.

How do you clean an automatic tea maker?

All three machines have a self-clean mode. Add water and a drop of dish soap, press the self-clean button, and the machine does the rest. For the InstaCuppa, the carafe is fully detachable for rinsing. We recommend cleaning after every use — leftover milk residue can affect the taste of your next batch.

Steel or glass — which InstaCuppa chai maker should I buy?

Stainless steel if you have small children, a busy kitchen, or you want zero breakage anxiety. The 700ml carafe brews up to 600ml (2-3 cups) vs the glass version's 400ml (2 cups). Glass if you enjoy watching your chai brew and your kitchen is child-proof. The glass version is lighter and brews 2 minutes faster. Both cost Rs 4,999.

Can I make coffee in these machines too?

Yes. All three have a coffee/cappuccino mode. The InstaCuppa also has a cold froth mode for iced coffee and cold lattes — useful for summer or for teenagers who prefer cold coffee. The Wonderchef has a cappuccino mode, though customer reviews on its frothing consistency have been mixed.
